LINE-UP vs Man City: Maxi dropped despite scoring last week...

Here is the confirmed line-up for today's game against Manchester City at Anfield. Remember, you heard it here first, a full 20 minutes before the LFC official site released the line-up.

As exclusively reported earlier, a distraught Craig Bellamy has pulled out of the Liverpool team as a result of Gary Speed's death this morning.

TEAM: Reina, Johnson, Skrtel, Agger, Enrique, Lucas, Adam, Henderson, Kuyt, Suarez, Downing

SUBS: Doni, Carra, Kelly, Coates, Spearing, Maxi, Carroll

I know I go on about this a lot but, once again, a player who scored in the previous game has been dropped.

I just don't see how dropping Maxi makes any sense; how is this good man-management? How is it a good motivational tool? The reward for playing well should be staying in the team. Indeed, Mark Lawrenson reiterated this point himself earlier this week when talking about Agger and Skrtel keeping Carra out of the team:

"It's the old premise at Liverpool: If you go into the team and play well then you stay in the team. That's the way that it is, and it's that way throughout the side"

A nice ideal, but it's obviously not true anymore at LFC.

Having said that, Kenny probably feels that we need more physicality and presence in midfield to cope with Man City's array of attacking players. I see that, but it's still disappointing, and it will be even more galling if Henderson is played out of position on the wing, which seems likely.

  1. TThere is no way we will win....why change a winning team ????

  2. at least he didn't pick AC and got Downing back in... i think Dirk and Luis can do some damage on the back 4

KK can only from who's available.

  3. Mali's point is moot anyway as Bellars is not playing which changes the team anyway. Think. I woulda kept Maxi in though.

  5. with bellamy out the way we played would not have happened anyway... downing is on form as seen with england and henderson seems full of confidence when he came on last week... 2 1 win i think ... kuyt and suarez... C'mon the pool

  6. Hmm... I'm a little worried with that lineup.
Would have gone for Lucas and Spearing in midfield myself.
We need a high pressing/tempo game to keep City at bay.
    Hope its enough...

  11. Lucas was brilliant and won man of the match - how stupid do you feel on a scale of one to ten?

  12. Did we get out played? Were we the only team that looked liked winning in the end? I was disappointed not to see Maxi but the display was good by the team and we deserved to win.

  13. what did i see today; i saw a liverpool TEAM that against arguably the best side in the land, a team that is not dependant on one or two individuals. the person that stands out in a performance that ultimately should of won us the game was our linch pin in lucas. some liverpool fans will only look at the attacking options but today like the whole of the season is we where a quality team today, we matched city in every area, but yet again it is not good enough for some fans. i would understand these liverpool fans if we where winning the prem back to back in years before but we have not. fans need to understand like tottenham we will need a time of stability  and this is that year before we go on and  try to win the league! we are doing well and the team is doing well!

  14. Totally agree, Lucas was superb today and same goes for the rest of the team. Pity about the goal we conceded though, not sure what Kuyt and Johnson were trying to achieve at the time we conceded?

We are only the second team in the league this season to take points from City. Winning the game would have been great but overall I am happy to say that we were not outplayed which is a good thing. Henderson had a brilliant match too, what on earth does Downing have to do in order to be awarded with a goal or assist? Again today he created chances which were not converted and only some brilliant goalkeeping denied him a goal.

Suarez needs to start getting his shooting boots on though. 4 goals in 13 matches probably does not sit well with him either.

What can I say, Charlie Adam once again involved in our scoreline. He is proving to be a vital player and it seems like Adam and Lucas are finally forming a very good CM partnership. Carroll caused some problems too and again Hart pulled of a brilliant save to deny him too.

The only thing that is still missing from our play is more goals...

    Onwards and upwards!

  16. As good as Maxi was at the Bridge it was always going to be difficult to play him against a more mobile and physical City side.

We were always going to go with a 3 man Midfield vs the 2 City have in the holding role.Think we had to learned from the 2nd half vs CFC , Mata played in that floating central role and we could not cope at times with just Adam and Lucas.

Henderson is more suited to the righthand side of a midfield 3 and Adam 2 enjoys the security of 2 players covering him...it was a difficult decision to change a winning side but KD made the right 1.

Lets also not forget that as good as we were vs Cfc , they did completely dominate us in the 2nd half , largely playing a system that City employ with a front 4 of Aguero,Silva , Nasri and Milner.

Though i will admit that i did feel when City were down to 10, Maxi should have come on for a tiring Adam and as well as the obvious Carroll sub.

  19. Jaimie, did you ever pay that money to the Hillsboro charity??

  20. Players need to be rested ahead of Chelsea game

  21. lol, fuck me Jaimie.... anyone would think you were completely paranoid - blocking the words 'Hillsborough' and 'charity' from the comments section on your website.
Almost as if you didn't want those words mentioned... maybe because you still refuse to pay up on that £500 bet you so famously lost last season!!

  22. Did you know that Jaimie has blocked the words Hillsb0r0ugh and char1ty from appearing on his website... almost as if he wanted people to forget the five hundred quid bet he said he would donate and never did!

  23. Yunus JHB- Kenny Dalglish , makes the same mistake again , by leaving out Maxi , he scores a goal against a big team Chelsea an he gets dropped , and yet Dirk Kuyt misses two sitters at Chelsea and is in the starting line up, where is the football logic ?
DK missed 3 sitters against Man city and he plays for 80 minutes,we could have won the game yesterday if Maxi was in the starting line up .We threw 10 points at Anfield , we can start preparing for Europa League next season

  24. He's average ... one match doesn't prove greatness. Sevilla and Villareal .. lol.

  26. you dont have a clue ,do you?? What a disgrace to the liverpool fc fans you are!Dont you see ,v have a very important carling cup match versus chelsea and King Kenny had to make some tough decisions(not playing maxi)! Dirk Kuyt is an asset to this team..who tirelessly works for the team in offence as well as defence! Get a life mate..! I thought we have the best fans in the world ..who would support the team no matter what,bt here we have some thick fans..slating the team, slating the manager...and not appreciating the team where it is due. What a terrific performance the team gave yesterday, still there are many on this page whining and questioning the king's credibility.Go support Manchester United or City if you want immediate trophys!what a twat ^

  28. couldn't agree more with you mate.  We outplay the league champions and the current league leaders and still some are critical.  I've said it before and say it again, for those critical fans they deserve the likes of Hodgson and Benitez.

  29. Lucas was outstanding yesterday, really starting to come good.after all negative comments

  30. downing was useless again bad buy starting to think is he ever gonna come good can play outstanding for England and shocking for us, whats that 12 games no assists no goals could have bought better

  31. A better performance than the one against Chelsea which should have been rewarded with a victory. We never lost the middle of the park for a sustained period of time

Man City who had scored 42 times in their previous 12 EPL games were:
    - restricted to 7 attempts on goal - 14 was their previous lowest for the season
    - and Joe Hart made more saves in a EPL match than in any since January of this year (Villa - 6)

In addition to Lucas (who has now made more successful tackles than any other EPL player this season), Daniel Agger was outstanding. He dealt with Aguero superbly. Kudos to Charlie Adam too. His distribution in the 2nd half was really good and allowed us to press very effectively.  Thought Downing has his best game on the left for LFC. So encouraging to see him run at defenders again. But he needs to improve his shooting. The one he blasted across the box from a deep Henderson cross from the right was an ace chance.

If we continue with the same intensity and tactical flexibility and smarts we should continue to improve.

  32. tsk tsk tsk, such a short-sighted "fan"...didn't you hear the applause at anfield at the final whistle? Didn't you see how we close down the most expensive and mobile team who had been scoring goals for fun?

Before the game, I knew it will be a tight game and I'd be happy with a point. The performance on the pitch were sooo good I was disappointed for not taking all 3 points but everyone did their best
