Mark Wright: "I've never been a fan of Agger's defending, but..."

Former Liverpool defender Mark Wright believes Kenny Dalglish's team was on a 'different level to Chelsea' at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, and her reserved special praise for the performance of Denmark defender Daniel Agger.

Wright, who tasted victory against Chelsea several times during his 210 game Liverpool career, told LFC TV:

"I've never been a massive fan of Agger's defending, but I thought he did very well today, and I didn't feel that Chelsea really threatened [Liverpool's defence] that much".

Wright was keen to emphasise the importance of the team as a whole:

"As a team performance, it was fantastic. In the first half, Liverpool were a different level to Chelsea. The front two worked very hard, and that gave Lucas and Adam the chance to push on and pinch balls, and that's how they scored the first goal".

Wright also acknowledged Glen Johnson's great attacking play to score the winning goal:

"Johnson wasn't having the best of games defensively, but going the other way, he excites and does everything well.

"Charlie Adam put in a fantastic ball to find him, and what he was doing that far up the field at that time of the game was beyond me; as a centre-half I would've been pulling him back!

"I don't think it was great defending by Ashley Cole, but the finish was absolutely sublime".

Always worth seeing again :-)

  3. 'I've Never been a massive fan of Agger's Defending', that statement alone stopped me reading the rest of the article. Agger has been our best defender for 3 seasons, shame he is constantly injured.

  4. What's the point in being disrespectful towards Wright?  What does it matter what he does now?  Perhaps you should grow up a bit.  Wright is a former Red, and he did a good job for Liverpool whilst he was at Anfield.  Attack the argument, not the person.

  5. You stopped reading yet you felt compelled to comment? Are other people not allowed to have a different opinion to you?

  6. Wright was awful during his time at Liverpool, one of the worst defenders ever to play for the club that is my opinion. I express my opinion as a 35 year seasoned seasonticket holder. Maybe it is childish to launch personal attacks but really I get fed up of alsorans churning out lines like Wright on Agger. It might be different if it was Hansen but honestly Mark Wright. I would say that 99% of football officianados would say that Agger is a cultered classy defender.

  7. You're entitled to your view but to suggest Wright is 'one of the worst defenders to play for the club' is just not accurate in the slightest.  If he was so bad, he wouldn't have stayed around for 7 years.

Wright player 210 games for Liverpool, and 75 of those were clean sheets. If you're crap defender, you help to keep that number of clean sheets. I could do a comparative analysis of 30 LFC defenders of the last 30 years and illustrate factually that Wright was not one of LFC's worst defenders, but to be honest, I can't be bothered.Anyway, it doesn't matter about Wright's record for LFC - he is an ex-player, and he's entitled to his opinion.  |If you disagree with his opinion, why not just argue against it?

  8. I really really don't like this bloke. I never liked him as a player and he's a farce whenever he's asked to deliver punditry.

Similar to JimBob, I was tempted to ignore Wright's moronic musings as soon as I'd ascertained who was accredited with the "I've
Never been a massive fan of Agger's defending" quote, but I persevered,
much to my own bemusement. That's 15 seconds of wall-staring time I'll
    never get back.

  9. The whole discussion is so boring.
Jamie is right: this is a Liverpool FC blog open to debate on various issues, not a sort of jury or tribunal against former LFC players.
If You argues something ok, IF You don't have an argue about the issue please walk away.

  11. RRM, To say Wright is one of the worst defenders to play for the club, is simply nonsense. I can't think of a better central defender at the club for any length of time during the 1990's.

  12. Mark Wrught was a very good CB. Don't forget he got more than 40 international caps. I'm interested that you slag him off as poor and descrive Joey Jones as a legend.

  13. Totally agree. It wasn't his fault he played alongside some legitimately poor defenders (Phill Babb; Julian Dicks etc). Plus. he came in during the Souness era, when Liverpool were generally poor anyway.

  14. so its okay for wright to say he is not a fan of agger and be critical of him but not okay for me to say i am not a fan of wright and i think he was a poor defender. Stats as you well know dont tell the full picture

  19. Phil Babb is hands down the worst ever player let alone defender to play for Liverpool,Im not going to critisize Wright but Agger is levels above Wright ever was.
What I admire most about Agger is when he gets back from injury you would never know he was just injured he has the potential to be one of the best in the prem if he can just avoid injury.

  20. Agger has been our best defender for 3 seasons! Are you serious? He has not been our best defender for 3 games (Carra has averaged almost twice as many games per season as Agger!...he's in the same bracket as Aurelio for absenteeism). He had a decent game on Sunday but let's not lose a grip on reality. He is a very mediocre when it comes to actually defending and I would like to see more consistency and concentration from him before I start to think of him as a good defender. If we get 30 games from him this season it would be a start...what are the odds!?
