BARNES:These three £40m stars will not be coming to Liverpool FC...

Countless websites across the net manufacture dubious Liverpool transfer stories on a daily basis (GiveMeFootball.com anyone?), and in the last couple of months, the club has been linked with some very high profile names. Liverpool legend John Barnes has dismissed the ridiculous speculation over three players in particular, and has urged Liverpool fans to be 'realistic' with their expectations.

In recent weeks, the names of David Villa, Eden Hazard, and Bastien Schweinsteiger keep popping up in online rumours, but Barnes doesn't believe these transfers are likely to happen:

"We have to be realistic about who we can get, and while we have been linked with a lot of big names, such as David Villa, Eden Hazard and Bastein Schweinsteiger, At this moment in time, I don't think they will be coming to Liverpool.

"Liverpool shouldn't just spend for the sake of it. If we can improve the squad then yes, but if we can't, don't spend just because we have to.

Whilst I would like first team players to come to improve it, the players out there who could improve the squad will not, unforunately, be coming to Liverpool, and I doubt very much that any of those three will be coming to Liverpool".

The idea that David Villa would leave Barcelona and come to Liverpool, who are not in the Champions League, is just imbecilic, especially with Euro 2012 just around the corner.

  1. Yeah, I can't see it either. But, Although Hazard is at a team in the Champions League, I would say that we must be more appealing surely? It just depends on the competition. Also, it depends how their careers are looking and where we are at the end of January. If I was a striker I would love to link up with Suarez. Also, money talks, and if Anzhi can get Eto'o then maybe we can pick some quality up come January that will push us on.

  4. Sad but probably true, although we did get Suarez when we had no hope of European football, and Man City were bringing in CL footballers when they weren't in the CL by offering big wages and the potential of becoming a massive force...

  5. It does not need Barnsie to tell us that! There is sufficient and much cheaper talent out there for our needs at present. Things are progressing nicely ( aside from certain small items that is) and the building proceeds. We are already out from under the shadow of being told that we are a "one man team" as we are showing good pace and skills developing without Stevie ( and now Carragher). The future is not that daunting though I really would like to see Boudebouz from Sochaux join up with suarez - smiles....

  6. Dont write them off, Barnes. Soccer is now a bg money business . Players leave teir clubs for whatever reasons. Torres is one good example.

  8. Give me footbal dot coml? Who take interviews from LFC TV and try and say they own it!
I reckon the results against the top 4 and the style of play we trying to produce could bring players to us like it attracts players to Arsenal.

  9. I think you'll find the reusing quotes that are in the public domain is standard media practice. Every news provider on the planet does that. If someone says something at a press conference (like KD, for example), anyone there/listening can take those comments and make a story out of it.

Why should it be different for me? As I said, every news provider on the planet, whether it's The Guardian, CNN or the BBC does exactly the same thing.

As you will have noticed, 90% of the stuff I post is factual, i.e. based around stats or things that have been said by people. What I don't do is blatantly make up transfer stories like GiveMeFootball.com does. The only time I ever post transfer speculation is when there is a direct, verified quote from an agent or player.

  10. That is what I thought the same articles are produced all over the net now and fans like to use the interviews and stats that are made available to them to get their point across.

  13. I think because Johnson is Black that he would behave the same way Babel did. His skin colour being the only thing in common with Babel

  14. Frankly we don't need a David Villa or Sebastian, maybe hazard if the price is right.
We must look to our youth players and start bring them through Sterling Amoo,Morgan, Cody, Sliva, etc these players will be ready in about 18 months.
I would have been happy to see them in the league cup already but understand the pressure to win something.

  16. My client ding dong is a papua new guinean striker in our 3rd division. Real and Barca have enquired about him. Liverpool arsenal and AC milan are also in touch requiring his services. I am estimating a transfer fee of 42m. He is the next jonjo Shelvey. I wish I could be as good as aquilani's agent. Oh is he still selling aquilani - for -2 million?
