POLL: Carra? Agger? Coates? What is LFC's best defensive unit?

Liverpool are in the unique position of being completely injury free at the moment, and with 7 or 8 players fighting it out for 4 first-team defensive spots, who should be part of a settled defensive unit for the club?

One of the keys to a successful team is undoubtedly a settled defensive unit, and that is something Liverpool haven't been able to maintain as a result of persistent injury problems over the last year.

Now, every one of the club's defenders is fit, but what is Liverpool's best back 4? There are many different permutations (!), but injuries notwithstanding, if you could choose a settled back four that started every game, who would make the cut?

  9. btw Skrtel and Agger don't do right centre back, both are more comfy at left, Carra is still our best right centre back, Coates and Kelly will challenge for that spot in years to come

  10. I think Jaimie here is trying to initiate a constructive discussion about our defensive unit, so I guess we better stick to the question and stop imagining a dream team built on the back of american tycoons. Remember: 'we all sing from the same hymn book again'!

Currently we possess a solid defensive line built mainly of players who have been with the us for a while. I think Carra has a lot more to give to this club in its charge for PL glory and he deserves to get that medal. But he should also start giving way to the younger generation on occasion. Agger does seem to spend more time on the table than on the pitch but you cannot ignore his unique talent and his proved scouse mentality.

Kelly is maturing fast and he has probably already cemented his place in the first team right back position. Another player who has managed to highlight the excellent work done by the academy is John Flanagan. He still has some way to go but he has shown great skills and determination when asked upon.

To my opinion the presence of Kelly and Flanagan gives us the freedom to try Johnson in a right wing role, which may prove to be his best position on the pitch.

Skrtel is definitely a good squad player but only as a central defender. I am very excited about the acquisition of young Coates. I have watched him play for Nacional in Uruguay and for the national team as well and he really seems like a gifted young lad who can quickly step in the shoes of great Sami Hyypia or even overcome his achievements.

The best buy of the summer for me has been that of Luis Enrique and his performances so far suggest he could turn into our very own Ashley Cole/Patrice Evra. Aurelio is a perfect back up for him and lets not forget we also have Jack Robinson, who captained our youth team until a year ago.

Speaking about the defence I cannot omit the name of Lucas, who's brilliant work laid the foundation of our new look midfield unit.

  12. And why is Liverpool City Council so opposed to this move by LFC?

  13. It's pretty difficult to say Coates is part of our best defence when we've barely even seen him play over here. I will say though that I'd be prepared to immediately promote him ahead of Skrtel as backup to Carragher & Agger.

At least with the rookie mistakes that Coates will inevitably make, we can convince ourselves that they are due to youth/inexperience and will be eradicated over time. Skrtel has had enough time to iron out his mistakes for us to conclude that this is as good as he's going to get. Which clearly isn't good enough.

The other major debate remains over Kelly vs Johnson, and as I've argued before, I would stick with Johnson while he is fully fit. At this point, even with the defensive limitations, I still think that he adds more to the team than Kelly and so should retain his senior standing in the squad. We're not at the point where we can afford to have such players on the bench, so if he doesn't perform to the expected level when reinstated into the team, then we should cut our losses and move him on asap. I wouldn't be prepared to take that loss on the basis of him 'disappointing' in such malfunctioning teams as he was forced to play in over the last couple of years though
