Here are a couple of videos showcasing the talents of Liverpool's newest centre-back, 6'6 Uruguayan Sebastian Coates (pronounced co-ah-tez). It looks like Kenny Dalglish may have snapped up another player with real potential for the future. If I was Daniel Agger or Martin Skrtel, I would be nervously looking over my shoulder right about now.
Hopefully, Coates will turn out to be an imperious, dominating aerial presence, something Liverpool has lacked in central defence since Sami Hyypiä left the club.

I'm not sure Coates is pronounced "co-ah-tez" since his father's English.
ReplyDeleteCarragher is the weakest link - good to give away own goals or make critical errors and hoof whenever he can. I guess you don't mention him as being in danger from Coates because he did such sterling work for you in working with Purslow to undermine Rafa - the manager who did most for him.

ReplyDeleteJamie is actually on the money with his pronunciation. The name may be of English origin but it is pronounced from its Spanish interpretation given Uruguay is a predominantly Spanish speaking country.

"Kuyt" is not an English surname though is it? Coates on the other hand is, thanks to his father being English.

You probably missed the point where I said English names can be pronounced differently in other languages just like foreign languages can be pronounced differently in Englis hence the Kujt example.

Skrtel too - that guy has been hyped up as our man mountain at the back for God knows how long, but every time I watch I see him ducking the opposition big man (e.g. Agger would be responsible for marking Drogba instead of being the spare man in a game against Chelsea).
ReplyDeleteIt would be great if we could get rid of Skrtel right now rather than allowing his transfer value to diminish further with him spending the next year largely on the bench/in the stands where he deserves to be!
Tbh, Agger has slipped a bit from his standards of yesteryear also, but hopefully he'll be able to pick his game back up when playing alongside a more imposing partner. The sooner that Coates steps up to make the starting berth his own, the better! :)
but yea, Carragher is included with Skrtel as a player that needs to be phased out from first team duties asap if we are to have any real aspirations of being legitimate title contenders.
ReplyDeleteI had been saying that Kelly should be getting prepped to assume that role from last year, but with Coates stepping in front of him now, Kelly will have to up his game significantly if he wants to earn a position at centre back
He seems to be able to combine no-nonsense defending with excellent close control.

People pronounce it badly in spanish just becouse the english pronounciation of Coates is difficult in spanish, and makes you sound funny, even if many people know the right pronounciation. I guess people in England should pronounce it correctly as he has a british father or grandfather.
