He played a decent line up last night, but should have played gerrard on the left, aurelio behind him and aquilani in middle instead of insua at lb! At least WE won! :) But they did miss easy chances :( Defensive problems continue :( Line up against Portsmouth:
ReplyDeleteReina
Johnson Agger Carragher Aurelio
Gerrard Aquilani
Benayoun/Kuyt Riera/Benayoun
Torres/Ngog/Kuyt
a 4-4-2...?!keep dreaming mate
ReplyDeletethis is what I have heard today, from sources at the cloob, admin not paying staff.
ReplyDeleteGerrard is on the verge of leaving, Torres will leave if no CL football next season, Benitez is staying and will appoint Carra as a player coach. Just when you think things can't get any worse, they most probably will

what a load of crap
ReplyDeletereally, well here's another one for you. Torres will have surgery on his hernia in the new year to be fit for the world cup, against Rafa's wishes, and will be out for the last couple of months of the season. This is why we are trying to sign Nistelrooy
ReplyDeleteInteresting info. Wouldn't surprise me in the least if Gerrard wants to leave. Why would he want to continue playing under Benitez, a manager who is taking Liverpool nowhere fast.
ReplyDeleteSorry Guest, but i have to disagree with you, Aquilani is not ready for Premeir league yet, i know we are all frustrated and looking for some miracle in our midfield and i want it as much but honestly, he is not ready, not talking match fit, i think he needs another month or so to get used to rythme of premier.
ReplyDeleteI thought that we weren't as good in the first half vs Arsenal, nor as bad in the 2nd half as people are making out - we did well at stopping them from stamping their authority on the game, but didn't show any real signs of class ourselves.
ReplyDeleteIn comparison, against Wigan the team put together probably the best offensive game I've seen us put together this season. There was much more movement off the ball than we've seen in aaaages with players interchanging positions and moving into space like back in the "pass and move, Liverpool Groove" days, and even though it didn't always come off the players kept trying one touch football to create space and opportunities for themselves, belying the talk of a lack of confidence throughout the squad.
I haven't looked at any stats of the game, nor do I care about them, but we looked to use the improved ball movement to to create better shooting opportunities much more than in any recent games (real chances not just shots hoping for the best) and looked a darned sight more attractive doing it too!
Caution can be added that this is the same Wigan team that have been totally slaughtered by the other contenders, and we did still give them a few opportunities to score, but on the positive side we have played many other poor teams this season and even when winning not looked so convincing, so I was very pleased with yesterday's performance. Hopefully this will continue and we won't resort to feeding Torres scraps again when he's back upfront...

Be very surprised if this info is correct ? But would it be a bad thing ? maybe we use use the money to rebuild a whole new team , Man utd have proved that you can win the league without a world class striker or a defensive midfielder over the last 3 seasons ! what has Gerrard done this season ??? he looks very uninterested at the monment ! We need a team not just to realy on 2 players all the time !
ReplyDeleteit was 4-4-2 yesterday and it looked far more effective than the 4-4-1-1 we usually use (wish people would stop calling it 4-2-3-1 since the widemen are given a far more defensive outlook than would be required in that formation while Gerrard stays further forwards)
ReplyDeleteI've made no secret of the fact that I'm not a big Kuyt fan, but he looked a great deal more useful to the team partnering N'gog upfront and linking up play than running around aimlessly in midfield and laying balls back to the defence.
If only Benitez didn't wait until the £20m alternative was available to finally do what we've been saying all season and drop Gerrard back into central midfield at the expense of Lucas/Masch... Oh well, next year eh...
wow, look at the crowds in the Europa Championship League Cup - this is what Liverpool have to look forwards to!?!? =-O Can't we just opt out of this competition until we make it back into the Champions League?? :(
ReplyDeleteSo we have scored 0.1 goals less this season so far doesn't this kind of put paid to the recurring myth on here that we are far less creative? If you also take into consideration that our 2 most potent attacking players in Torres and Gerrard have not been at their bestor fully fit for most of the season so far then this season in attack we have not been so bad.
ReplyDeleteWhere we have been awful this season is in defence a defence where we have been riddled with injuries and loss of form. Now call me the optimist but you would think that goign on past records and how Rafa is a "defensive" manager (ignore the fact that we were top scorers last season it doesn't count because Rafa is a "defensive" manager) then it stands to reason that with our talisman striker hopefully coming back to full fitness and our defence gaining a little stability that we are perfectly capable of going on a good run.
Gerrard is all about HIS legacy. He keeps saying he wont be considered a great until HE wins a league title. He refuses to play wide right which is his best position because 1) he hates to run up and down & 2) he wants to be named alongside players such as viera, keane etc to boost his ego. When we played Arsenal in the Euro cup last season he had a face like a smacked arse in the tunnel. Then I noticed he as playing left mid! In one of my last posts i mentioned Gerrard looked to be sulking because he wanted to be involved in the action at centre mid, lo and behold against wigan he drops to a deeper role. He's been sussed at as a striker and he knows it! If he plays there any longer it may harm his legacy and ultimately his massive ego.
ReplyDeleteInsuaaaaaaa!!!! >:o Everytime I see his name on the teamsheet I shudder. I can bank on him for a 'piechnik' moment, and he almost came through for me a couple of times last night. Defensively a flippin liability.
ReplyDeleteThat does my head in too! >:o WE PLAY 4-4-1-1 !!! If we played 4-2-3-1 our wide players would be free of defensive responsibility. When was the last time Ryan Babel got dropped from the team because he refused to stay further up the pitch? WHEN?! If any one could be given the tag of using 4-2-3-1 it was Barca when they played the following team
ReplyDeleteXabi iniesta
Messi Deco Ronaldinho
Eto'o
I never ever saw Messi or Ronaldino defend in any match! Thats how 4-2-3-1 is played.
For a boy with so many Injury problems he does seem to love an end of season Tournament...but who can blame him..
ReplyDeleteRegarding Dirk playing as second striker, when he plays in the 'hole' the team has a lot more fluidity because the ball sticks. I'd love to see Kuyts overall game stats compared to Gerrards as second striker (NOT GOALS!!). Kuyts movement is clever and constant and his link play is really good. Bad news is he couldn't finish his dinner if he was force fed.
ReplyDeleteI hate to say it but Torres looks like he will never be completely fit again. We can't rely on him to be fit for sustained periods of time and must realise this quickly. Coupled with the fact that Gerrard can only play up front if Torres plays spells a season of chop and change in both selection and positions.
ReplyDeleteJaimie help me out here
ReplyDeletelooking at your overall analysis of the season so far not the head to head we won 6 matches and drew 2 so (6*3)+(2*1)=20 points gained you have 23, and points loss is (6*3)+(2*2)=22 you have 21, same for last season points gained (9*3)+(4*1)=31 not 33, points lost (1*3)+(4*2)=11. The net effect is that for loss points is the same where as the points gained should -11 not -10. Also looks like you missing a game somewhere as 6 won, 6 loss and 2 draws =14 played plus the 2 NCF=16 but we played 17 games
I forgot to update the first couple of figures in the table. Thanks for pointing it out - it has now been rectified :)
ReplyDeleteBut we easily could have lost the game, remember scotland(???) on the post...
ReplyDeleteRumours say, that Torres will have surgery to repair his hernia! He wants to be top-fit for the WC in June/July!
ReplyDeleteWhat is the point ?
ReplyDeleteWhat purpose are you serving Mr Kanwar ?
What positives can we take ?
top being so unbelievably narrow-minded. Does the news only ever report positive stuff?! No. They reports whatever is newsworthy. These figures are just for information purposes; it's useful information to know, and there are plenty of people out there like me who like to keep track of the stats. Just because we can't take positives from these figures doesn't mean they shouldn't be published.
ReplyDeleteAnd anyway, you're wrong; there are positives to be taken:
1. Still scoring lots of goals
2. Less draws than last season (given the fact we have had 24 league draws in two seasons, reducing this figure is a positive sign).
How can the Guest be wrong? He was only asking some questions. He did not say there weren't any positives to be taken. Chill dude!
ReplyDelete<span><span style=" ">“</span></span>Sorry Guest, but i have to disagree with you, Aquilani is not ready for Premeir league yet, i know we are all frustrated and looking for some miracle in our midfield and i want it as much but honestly, he is not ready, not talking match fit, i think he needs another month or so to get used to rythme of premier.Yeah keep on telling yourself that Mo, and keep on defending Rafa for buying a player that cost the club 20mil who was supposed to be a replacement for Alonso. I have a solution to the Aquilani saga, lets cover the pitch with a soft blanket and then play him in a game against a team with eleven girls. When Rafa signed him if I am not mistaken he said that Aquilani was going to be out for Eight weeks. Surely since then he should have had more game time??? We are already halfway into the season. Rafa is making Aquilani look like a schoolboy. Now tell me, was the 20mil spent on Aquilani viable? And dont gives us the excuse of him being a long term signing because we have only seen glimpses of him, how do we know that he is going to be a success?
ReplyDeleteWould the table show a better reflection of the current position compared to last seasons if we compared the results against promoted teams to those against relegated teams? just swap teams poisitioned 1,2 & 3 from the promoted group for teams positioned 18, 19 & 20 of the relegated.
ReplyDeleteThen we might have a more clear comparision of where we are, currently if your going to compare 16/32 of a potential 19/38 fixtures then the stats will be schewed...or is that what you want Jamie?
I noticed that last season we'd played 17 games as we have this season, but according to your stats we've played 15 games and are 4 points short of our actual points tally, once again it seems that you are trying to put a negative spin on everything LFC related Jamie. The blog is titled Critical Realism about LFC, but very rare does it seem to be realistic articles written, maybe the blog should be titles Critical about LFC?
Did you not see the NCF in the table, which means 'no corresponding fixture'? This is why there are 15 games and not 17 counted. This is obvious.
ReplyDeleteIt is not as simple as just comparing teams the way you suggest. For example - Stoke were promoted last season; if we include Stoke as one of the games then they will appear twice in the table with the same result! Can you not see this?
What??? I don't think you understand Jamie.
ReplyDeleteI meant, if you were to compare the Burnley/Birmingham result to say Middlesbrough (that is a promoted team for a relegated team) then we would have a more fair comparison. Currently your table only shows points gained this season for 15 games but shows 17 games from last season.
Also I'm no mathematical genious but 34 minus 23 is 11 not 12. And it should be 34 minus 27 showing that we are in fact 7 points worse off than last season not 12?
I think you need to decide if the table will be a complete comparison of the full 38 games or if you are not going to include the promoted teams (NCF) then you can't include the relegated teams. In order to have a true comparison surely the one constant has to be games played otherwsie you may as well roll out the total points amounted last season and show us some 55 points short?
Something everyone should bare in mind is that we have the joint best record in the Premier League at beating bottom half teams, we average 2.71 points in these games, more than United and Chelsea, and if this record continues we should have no difficulty retaining our top 4 position. I've already bet that we will, although millions of other fans cant't join me in that decision - they don't have the option! <span style="font-family: Arial; white-space: pre;">http://cli.gs/y9p37V</span>
ReplyDeleteI've been looking at the data again Jamie and I think we're both being a bit mislead by the table comparing scores in corresponding fixtures - this doesn't matter. What I would like is to see the Analysis table updated so that it shows the stats for the 17 matches played this season - thats where the confusion is coming in...
ReplyDeleteUnirea Urziceni eh?
ReplyDeleteDespite my criticism's of Rafa, I do still expect us to end up in the top 3/4, and pick up 19+ points from the christmas schedule of 21 points (including 3 already taken from Wigan)
ReplyDeleteThe only threat to the Top 4 place is Aston Villa, because they might have learnt from the experience of fading away so badly to let Arsenal overtake them last season, but Tottenham and Man City just aren't going to be consistent enough to string together the kind of run that Liverpool can, with Tottenham constantly reshuffling their back 4 and Man City just having a dodgy back 4...
beat Barcelona didn't they?
ReplyDeleteWith respect, it seems the only person confused here is you. The tables quite clearly show that te data is for like-for-like fixtures, and those games without a corresponding fixture are not included.
ReplyDeleteAt the end of the season, I'll add in the other games, but for now, they don't really matter - What matters is the points we're gaining/losing against teams we played this year AND last year.
I am talking about the Analysis table which is very misleading as it is inacurate. I still don't feel it is right to compare 15 games to 17 games and so the total games played should be equal. But that is your choice.
ReplyDeleteWeather you add in the other games or not - can you please update the table so at least the basic maths is correct.
No, rangers
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry, but your interpretation is incorrect:
ReplyDelete1. It is NOT 15 games compared to 17; it is 15 vs. 15. The figures for NCFs are not counted for either year.
2. The maths is correct:
*Points gained this season (15 games NOT 17) = 23
*Points gained last season ((15 games NOT 17)= 34
Thus we have gained 11 points LESS than last season in like-for-like fixtures
*Points dropped this season (15 games NOT 17) = 22
*Points dropped las season (15 games NOT 17) = 10
Thus we are 12 points worse off than last season.
I have no idea where you got 7 from, but it's not right/
No one looks like picking up a long run of wins, man utd lost 4, chelsea 3, arsenal 4 so..
ReplyDeleteok my mistake - don't really pay too much attention to what's going on in the group stages...
ReplyDeletewe could have conceded from that one incident but we also could've scored more ourselves, and any dropped points would've been underserved based on the balance of play and number of chances created. Even if we had dropped points, I still would've been optimistic about our chances in the next game as long as the team performed in the same manner, as 9 times out of 10 that performance would get a win. On the same token, I was always worried that we'd meet our comeuppance and lose the next game if performances didn't change when getting results against teams like Debrecen or Everton, with some very unconvincing performances.
ReplyDeleteMost teams will concede at least one chance during a game anyway (as long as the opposition has any intent to try to score at all and doesn't insist on playing a defensive 1 striker system for the whole game) so I look more at the balance of play over the whole game, rather than at isolated incidents
Gerrard leaving, Torres out for operation, Defend sucks, Gillet & Hicks Legacy, and the BEST, benitez stuboorness & F**KING stupidity.
ReplyDeleteOh, don't forget about we miss out on Sneijder,Robben,Van De Vaart, Downing, Millner because our GLORIOUS manager too busy chasing AQUASUCKSLANI who as fragile as Swarovski Crystal...
This season is the BEST EVER since Shankley. Thanks Benitez.
And please cross our fingers together or put a huge cross in front of your house to pray Nistelrooy will be here...
Sucks...Benitez can suck Fergie balls all day long...
