VIDEO: LOAN WATCH - Krisztián Németh's brilliant debut for AEK Athens

Currently on loan at AEK Athens, 20 year Liverpool striker Krisztián Németh put in an excellent man of the match performance against Atromitos last week.

Németh came on as a substitute in the 29th minute and showed composure, skill, strength and an end product when he provided the assist for Ismael Blanco to score the winning goal. Brilliant nutmeg to get past the defender and and what a pass to set up the goal!

In my view it was a mistake to send Németh away on loan this season. He's 20 years old now and (probably) more than capable of holding his own in the first team. Michael Owen was 17 (!) when he broke into the side; and why? Roy Evans gave him something that so many young players at Liverpool just do not get these days:

A proper chance.

  1. I was surprised he certainly must be at least as good an option as Voronin!! It will help him and LFC in the long run. Rafa knows what he is doing and if the young players are good enough they will get their chance we only have to look at Ayala & Insua. I just hope we get a decent run in the Carling Cup and play some more younger players out of the recent Melwood graduates David Amoo is one I am hopeful for.

  2. Lets look at Michael Owen now, injury after injury.... the same goes for Fabregas at the moment... introduced to the premiership at a very young age, it takes it's toll eventually on young bodies... he needs to build up his strenght and get used to the vigours of playing top flight football against very strong players, I think introducing him slowly will see his body be able to take tackles a lot easier, you can't just throw him in at the deep end straight away, the difference his huge..... you'll see him play for liverpool, but when he is good and ready, as Guinness put it... the best things comes to those that wait and I am as eager as you to see him in a red jersey, but would prefer to see him over a sustained period as opposed to just playing a few games here and there.

  3. I'm disappointed he's gone on loan, and disappointed Rafa hasn't given him a chance yet. Rafa is only interested in giving defensive minded players a break a young ages (ayala, insua, plessis), which seems absoutely bizarre to me. Younger attack minded creative players need to have proved themselves elsewhere firs (e.g. Babel, and look at him!). Bring Nemeth back to Anfeld

  4. Is their ever a story on this site which doesn't involve sniping at Rafa or Kunwar's preposterous grooming of his own ego? Is it really credible for him to say that he knows better than Rafa or is he just a no mark with self esteem issues.

Maybe Jamie can run a poll so that punters can express their opinion as whether Rafa or Jamie should be Liverpool manager?

If he has the cojones that is.

  5. He looks fine. Nice to see him start so well. You never know what goes on Rafa's head, but to loan Nemeth to AEK gives him more chances to shine. If Torres and Gerrard stays fit, he wouldn't have played a lot in the first team anyway. Not with the system we use. But I agree young players should be given more chances. That's why I was happy to see Ayala play against Stoke and I hope to see many youngsters this year not only in the Carling Cup but in PL as well. We have great prospects like Pacheco, Dalla Valle, Ayala and Buchtmann coming up in few years. Can't wait to see them in action. Unfortunately none them is a winger (though Buchtmann can play in the wing). We need another Barnes.

  7. If Nemeth was as good as Owen was then he would be in the Liverpool team by now.The fact is that he's not as good as Owen was. To compare the two is unfair. Owen was an exceptional young player. It takes a player of extraordinary quality to break into the Liverpool squad at 17 and the England World Cup squad at 18. At the moment there's only two players like that in the Premiership; Rooney and Fabregas.

Nemeth needs to develop at his own pace. He's only 20. Hopefully after a year in Greece he'll be better prepared for the premiership and he can be a really good player for us. Just give him time and don't expect miracles.

  8. Excellent point, Mattely.  You're right - it does seem as though defensive players get given more of a chance than attacking players.  i wish it was the other way round.

  10. Nemeth not as good as Owen?  Why?  I disagree.

When Nemeth was 17 he was playing for MTK Hungária in the Hungarian National Championship (top league in Hungary).  He scored 18 goals in 37 appearance in the 2006-07 season.  The Hungarian league may not be as good as the premiership, but it is still top-flight professional football.

  11. Mostly yes. Ngog got a chance play in few games at the age of 19 but he didn't  come from Liverpool Academy.

  12. i think its a disgrace benitez dosent let creative young players have a chance

voronin etc. are looked at ahead of the likes of nemeth, ngog and disgracefully pachecho

very few young players are given a chance look at what fergie and wenger does, benitez has ruined babel, possibly agger, sissoko yet kuyt and whatnot are keystones

  13. It's a different time -- in regards to pressure and competition - as to when we introduced Owen. Even SAF last year said how much harder it was to introduce youngsters than in years gone by.

  14. Sissoko wasn't the same player after his eye injury, and still hasn't performed to what his potential could have been since sold. Babel has only played on a handful of occasions which have shown glimpses of brilliance, Derby and Arsenal in CL are the 2 that stand out most.
If these players were playing week in week out giving sub-standard performanced the daggers would be out for Benitez.
Nemeth, Im sure will be a future player but experience is key and a full season with expectation on his shoulders will be more valuable than playing the final 10 minutes at home against the likes of Burnley and Hull.

  15. I suggest you go back and have a look at Owens first few seasons for Liverpool. He was a different class. He won the European player of the year at the age of 22, the only player to do that since is Christiano Ronaldo.

Nemeth is nowhere near that level... yet.

  16. Yes, Owen was exceptional, but we're not talking about what he did when he was 22.  Nemeth was playing regularly in a top Hungarian side at age 17 and scored lots of goals.  I would say that at 17, Nemeth was on a par with Owen. The difference between the two is Owen was given a consistent chance; he wasn't dumped in the reserves after doing well and farmed out on loan.

  18. In fact Rafa was forced to loan Nemeth because it was the only condition to be able to bring Kyrgiakos to Liverpool

    ReplyDelete
  19. Fair point. But if Nemeth were to stay at Anfield this season he would be limited to the odd substitute appearance and Carling Cup matches. There's no way he's going to break the Gerrard - Torres partnership.

I'm really hoping the season long loan with first team football in a decent league will do him the world of good and maybe next season he will be able to give Rafa a bit of a selection headache.

  20. If Rafa is willing to keep trying Voronin - what makes people think he knows what he is doing with the likes of Nemeth..

Rafa is a master tactician but when it comes to bringing through players and signing the right kind of players he is fairly hopeless. Of all the strikers we have signed it is only Torres who has proved capable - in fact I'd say the strikers we had at the Club when Rafa took over were a million times better than the deputies we now have for Torres.

Nemeth might not be the finished article but neither is N'gog and I think Nemeth would be a better option for the first team than N'gog. So why hasn't N'gog been farmed out, is it because Rafa doesn't want to lose face in the same way he didn't want to lose face by bringing back Owen (traitor) on a freebie?

  21. haven't a clue what is going on in this video . . . where (timewise) is Nemeths goal? also - loan deals . . . . isn't ti generally the deal that the player can be called back mroe or less at any time, that's what's in generally agreed so KN could well be back should we need him, although I do agree that maybe we should be playing him ahead of Voronin where it's merely a 15 minute rest for Torres/Kuyt etc. Hopefully we'll see plenty of him next season as he seems to have something to offer. Pacheco is still too young imho.

  22. Rafa had no choice. The American twats in charge gave him no money to spend and the only way he could get Kyrgiakos was to provide Nemeth on loan as part of the deal.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Nemeth didn't score; he provided the assist for the goal.  You can see the assist at 0.18.

  24. voila!! meant to mention that. Most pertinent part of the deal. who pays the wages on these loan deals . . . . its all about budget so Krygiakos coming in means one out . . .

  25. ok, thanks, still a bit of a ropey video, editing is awful and why do these guys insist on "painting" the action over with some awful effect which seems to ruin the detail of the action. moan . . moan . . . not to mention the music  . . . . wtf is that?

  26. Totally agree - the video is not the best. I'll see if I can find a better version.

  27. A loan spell will do the lad good as he will get regular football and he'll want to prove to rafa he's good enough to suceed at liverpool, had he stayed what good would 3/4 carling cup games and a few 10 minute sub appearances over a season do for the lads confidence. The formation we play at the moment with Stevie behind Nando limits Nemeths chances so why not send him out on loan while we've got the likes of Voronin/Babel/Ngog to come on and give Nando a rest every now and then (once the game is won!), at 20 yrs old and the best stiker in the world at the front of the queue for the lone striker role what good would another season in the ressies do for him?!

  28. It's so easy to demand 'a proper chance' for a player.

But you moaned about Babel not being given a proper chance. and Benayoun being wasted. Ok How can you give 'a proper chance' to all of them during this season when we are supposed to fight for the title? More chances for Nemeth means less chances for Babel, Reira, Benayoun, Pacheco and Ngog.

We aren't a nursery - we are title contenders.

If a player is best on a particular position he should play. If he is not he shouldnt. If a player is a good prospect should develop on training/reserves/loan. Benitez shouldnt give a place in a PL game to someone he feels is a second best player at the moment.

We loaned Nemeth for the season (BTW: do you know if there is a call back clause in the loan contract?). OK. As the result he will play more first team football than Voronin. I guess 5-10  times more. If he do well he will come back as nearly finished product. I really hope he will be a great player for us next season.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Whilst i think Nemeth could have made a decent impact in the senior set-up this season the sheer lack of opportunity is an important consideration. We look like very rarely using two strikers, so for that one starting spot you have Torres and no realistic competition. Torres will play nearly every game he is fit to play. You only need to look at how little time Voronin and N'Gog will play themselves to appreciate that going out on loan may be the better option. The Greek league isn't amazing, but Panathinaikos and Olympiacos are still very good sides and his performances against them will be interesting - AEK are also in European competition too.

The other way he would get into the team is maybe behind the striker - even though he can do it despite it not being ideal, there is even more competition. If Benayoun cannot guarantee a starting place it's difficult for someone from the reserves to do so. That's the simple reality of modern football at this level.

If he does well he will come back and go into the senior team. If he doesn't do well then he would be unlikely to have for us and so it isn't much of a loss. The only issue is whether he would've made a worthwhile contribution by staying here - more than N'Gog for instance. That's subjective, and the point about competition remains. I don't think we can have two young strikers in the squad and satisfy both players' need for game time. It's difficult enough to give N'Gog chances.

  30. The lad can play a higher standard of football in Athens than he can in the reserves which is why he went on loan.

Rafa will have calculated that he would not get enough first team chances here to warrant keeping him here. He's the gaffer, he spends a hell of alot of time watching these lads.

    In Rafa we trust.
