In November 2008, Jamie Carragher made history by breaking a Liverpool FC record set by Ron Yeats in 1969. Normally, this would be a reason to celebrate, but not in Carra’s case - breaking the record has now made him the club’s unluckiest player ever.
I am, of course, talking about own goals! No other player in Liverpool history has scored as many as Carra, who scored his sixth and seventh own goals against Spurs and Hull respectively at the end of last year, overtaking Ron Yeats’ long-standing record of five.
Here is Carra’s roll of honour:
Dec 1998 v Tottenham
May 1999 v Tottenham
September 1999 v Man Utd
September 1999 v Man Utd
May 2006 v West Ham
November 2008 v Tottenham
December 2008 v Hull City
One thing is clear – Carra loves to score for Spurs! And who can forget those two own goals against Man United in 1999? Without those goals, which made the score 3-2 in United favour, Liverpool would have won the game.
With those goals for United, Carra became joint holder of another Liverpool record: the only player - along with former LFC captain Dick White - to score two own goals in one game. (White scored 2 for Middlesbrough in 1961).
Carra had a bad run between 1998 and 1999, scoring 4 own goals in less than a year. Then came welcome barren spell of seven years! He's picked it up again recently though, with two in the last ten months; let's hope this does not signal the start of another scoring streak!
Will the record ever be broken again? I doubt it!
