FOOTBALL CHEATS: No 11 - Steven Gerrard (Andorra v England - 2008)

As much as it pains me to include Liverpool players in this series, I have to remain unbiased, and Steven Gerrard is arguably (and regrettably) the club's biggest diver.

A clear dive if ever there was one. There was no contact at all with the keeper and Gerrard went down clearly trying to win a penalty.

I'm sure Liverpool fans will label me a traitor for highlighting Gerrard's diving but cheating in football needs to stop, and that means fans have to criticise and ridicule their own players for diving. To say nothing is - in my view - tacit acceptance of this type of behaviour.

  1. i agree it's a dive, there is some contact from the defender but not the keeper. Clearly not a penalty even if he'd gone down at the right time, however if he had there was the chance the ref might have given it.

  2. Im a pool fan and I admit. Dive.
I just hope they knuckle down on EVERYONE.
    No place in football.

  5. Yes, who cares.  In fact, why don't we just encourage diving!

  6. as a reds fan it pains me to see Gerrard (and Torres) go to ground so easily. I think if UEFA, Fifa and the FA got tough for 12/18 month you would see it disappear very quickly.

Elbowing and tackles from behind are now very rare in the prem, because of the instant red card that is likely issued.

  9. surely not a contact with the keeper, but it appears there is a contact with the defender #3 resulting in loss of balance.

in any case, I've seen dives worse than this, just look in this series.

  12. I think the defender clipped him as he was running full flight, very similar to the penalty against AS Milan in Istambul when Gattuso clips him as he goes by him.  The contact may be accidental, but Gerrard would not have fallen otherwise.

  13. Maybe there Andorra's defener foul maybe not. But Gerrard dived after he managed to keep balance. Clear dive.

Look on Steven's face - he knows we know.

  14. Does anyone remember the time Robbie Fowler got awarded a penalty in a UEFA cup game and actually turned to the ref and said it wasnt a pen! I think he missed it anyway. Now thats a real striker - I doubt anyone would do that these days.

  15. I remember that, but I believe it was against Arsenal in the league.  Fowler got a fair play award for that.  He missed the penalty but someone followed up the rebound and scored.  Can't remember who though...

  16. I remember the arsenal one, I swear there was another incident away against a random polish team as well and one against chelsea years ago.

  17. Hmm - Maybe you're right.  If you are, it just enhances Fowler's fair play reputation even more :)

  20. This is not the best quality vid of this dive but it is definitely a dive.  You can see the guilt in Gerrard's face as he runs off after the incident.

  21. Jason McAteer.

Fowler missed unintentionaly. He tried to change ref's decision, but after it stood he tried his best.

  22. umm the defender hit him first which made him lose his footing wen someone bumps u, u try to keep ur footing by keep running then wen u cant u fall, if the keeper was on his goaline it wouldnt of made a difference .. c eduardo dive .. thats a dive not this
