Former Arsenal star Paul Merson has criticised Rafa benitez's £18m outlay on Glen Johnson, claiming that right backs are not worth that amount of money. Is he right?
Merson stated: "The Premier League is not blessed with 15 world-class left wingers so I don't see how a right-back can affect a game that much.
"I've got nothing against the player, I think he was outstanding for Portsmouth last year, but I just don't think you should be spending that amount of money on somebody who plays at right-back."

Rafa said he paid too much. English players are overpriced. But he delivers the attacking intent required to turn some of our home draws into wins, it will be money well spent.
ReplyDeleteUsing Paul Merson as an authoritative source for anything is a fool's errand.
How am I using Merson as an authoratative source? He stated his opinion, I'm merely asking whether he's right or wrong. Doesn't mean I agree with him. Well, actually I do (!), but that's beside the point ;)
ReplyDeleteThe thing is if you think about it say there isn't 15 world class wingers in the prem, we still have to defend against them don't we, I thought that bit was obvious and having the best for the job is always a good thing.
ReplyDeleteportsmouth already owed liverpool 10 mil or so from the crouch sale and as they could go in to administration and we would never get the money he actually cost us about 7 mil take off the 4-5 mil we got from arbeloa and for 2-3 mil we got an attacking international right back a good deal imo also we need more english players in the squad incase Fifa change rules so clubs need a certain amount of home grown players a good bit of business imo
ReplyDeleteNo .. the fact that you agree with him is not beside the point, it IS the point. You will do anything and utilize any information, no matter how irrelevant the opinion of the source may be (like Paul Merson, who is a well known Liverpool hater) to further your own opinions, which are so biased against Rafa it's scary.
ReplyDeletePaul Merson is a FOOL... Rafa know's what he's doing.. Paul stick to commentating as you have not got a clue!!
ReplyDelete1. Why is Paul Merson's opinion 'irrelevent'
ReplyDelete2. Please explain - with examples - how Merson is 'a well known Liverpool hater'
Merson's opinion is fair game, irrespective of your personal feelings about him.
?? He's just asking an opinion. So what if he agrees? He's just using the comment as a starting point for a discussion. Let him be.
ReplyDeleteAlso, 18M for a a world class right back would be a steal. The question is if Johnson is really that good. Look at Rafa's other wingers/sidebacks (Dossena, Riera). I dont' think they're terrible, but they haven't contributed much. I just hope he gets it right this time.
as a liverpool fan i do feel it is too much for a right back even if johnson turns out to be excellent but i also know we needed a quality right-back to replace the gap left by finnan. so i can understand spending slightly over the odds for him but 18m is a bit more than slightly over the odds it is crazy money for almost any defender
ReplyDeleteJaimie,
ReplyDeleteI have been to this site a number of times through News Now. I am starting to wonder if you are even a fan of LFC. I have not seen one "blog" that has anything good to say.
Merson's not paying attention to tactical evolution. Right backs do a lot more than just defend in contemporary football. Dani Alves, Sergio Ramos, etc.
ReplyDeleteJonathan Wilson argues, in his "The Question" column at the Guardian, that an attacking fullback forces the opposing wide mids to play more defensively.
No one is twisting your arm and forcing you to visit the site. if you don't like it, why continue visiting?
ReplyDeleteHe's got a point Jaimie - I often read your blog, directed here also from Newsnow as I like to read all things Liverpool FC but I have never heard you say something positive. The "if you dont like it , dont read it" arguement is a bit thin.
ReplyDeleteIt's not thin at all. It's simple - if you don't like criticism, don't come to this site. And the notion that I never say anything positive is just lazily inaccurate. I guess you just happened to miss two posts over the last two days, one about Michael Laudrup, the other championing the Gerrard-Torres partnership, both of which are positive (along with countless other positive articles over the last few years) Selective blindness, perhaps?
ReplyDeleteSaying a price is too much at any given time makes very little sense. How do you decide how much is good or bad value? How do you price someone for their skills? If Liverpool win the title, £17m will seem chicken feed!
ReplyDeleteYou can't go by what a player cost in years before, if you did then Kenny Dalglish would be the bargain of the century, he 'only' cost £440,000 when we bought him! But when we paid that, it was a lot of money.... and yes, I know he was worth every penny!
The whole gameplay has shifted over the last few years. Where teams were spending 90% of their budgets on goal-getters a few years ago, they are now recognising the important of building from the back and putting far greater value on the players who are goal-preventers.
Paul Merson was never the sharpest knife in the drawer and has about as much good to say about Liverpool as the bain of my life Andy Gray does. His whole reasoning seems to be the basis that 'you just don't go paying that sort of money for a full-back'. Well, you might not have when you were a player Merton, but today things have changed.
Is GJ worth £17m? Well, is anyone? I mean, REALLY worth that? Is Ronaldo worth £80m? Is Kaka worth £56m? Alonso was apparently worth £15m 12 months ago yet he sold for £30m. Is that his real worth?
These are nonsensical questions all. His value is in what he brings to the team. If he means we win games we would have drawn or lost, then he is worth plenty. If we have silverware in the trophy cabinet come the end of the season, all memory of paying £17m for him will be forgotten.
Red Barron
Merse is missing the point (as Houston pointed out) in a spectacularly drunken way.
ReplyDeleteRafa didn't spend all that money on a right back (which is just about 'right' for a young england international - a little expensive) so he could stop wingers, he would've bought a more defensive one if that was the case, and probably not sold Arbeloa (our best defensive full back at the time). Attacking full back. Much more pricey.
I agree with some other visitors that this blog is overly negative at times.
There's a difference between questioning the media and just spouting inflammatory rubbish.
There should be one more option:
ReplyDeleteJohnson is the best ENGLISH right back available for that kind of money.
There are cheaper options available elsewhere but the key point why he was signed was because he is English, and these are always overpriced.
What do u say of
ReplyDeleteDani Alves that was bought for €29 million up front, with €6 million more to pay at 25 years old...
Sergio ramos for €27 million...
Jose bosingwa for £16.3m...
Now Johnson is English... First choice RB unlike Dani Alves...24 years old...Chelsea/Man City were ready to pay 18M...His qualities we were lacking in liverpool...
I really think its what u have to pay when u mean business, very soon we'll see he's worth every penny...
Jaimie Kanwar...I used to hate this site before when u critisize rafa but i've realised it's good idea, something exceptional, lets argue...i really think thats why a lot of people visit your site b'cos they want to prove u wrong...so many interesting comments...good work pls...
Glen Johnson signed for us for £17.5m right... WRONG!
ReplyDeleteWe only paid £10m for him when you take off the Crouch money owed to us. I'm very doubtful we would have agreed ae fee with Pompey if the Crouch money was not there to offset it against.
And anyway, if you look at similar purchases in the Premier League such as Chelsea's purchase of Ferreira in 2005 of £19m and Chelseas's purchase of Bosingwa for £16.5m last year, I know who i'd rather have in my team!
Also, Daniel Alves cost Barcelona €30m last summer - if you want the top players, you have to pay the top money. I think £10m for Johnson is a good deal.
And... he's English, which obviously is important within the current Champions League rules.
You state that the signing of Johnson was offset by the money outstanding for Peter Crouch. Is this fact? I don't think so. This is rumour; we don't know the ins and outs of the deal. Or has it been published somewhere that I've missed?
ReplyDeleteThe simple truth is that a player is worth what a club will pay for them, which is based upon the value they believe the player will add.
ReplyDeleteAs has been said, if he helps deliver the title to Liverpool this season then it will be money well spent.
Rafa has replaced a mediocre right back with very limited attacking ability (and who will not improve any more) and replaced him with a young attack minded player with the potential to develop and improve over the coming seasons. If there is another out there who could have done this job for less money that fulfils the criteria Rafa is working against then I'm sure he would have signed him instead.
Fergie paid £18+ for Nani, Anderson, Carrick & Hargreaves.
ReplyDeleteIs Paul Merson suggesting that a.) Fergie pays over the odds on a regular basis. b.) That Johnson is not in the same class as the above mentioned.
Remind me, which of those 4 is a right-back?
ReplyDeleteMerson was specifically talking about full-backs.
If johnson assists 15+ goals this season...giving torres golden boot...unlocking home draws...and winning the league....what would u say...
ReplyDeleteBosingwa cost 16 mil, so did Ferreira. Nobody is having a go at Chelsea, plus Johnson's Eng so also costs more. Don't forget the Crouch money. And judaging by last year wasn't Johnson the best RB in England. And if he can get the goals, assists and cause general mayhem going forward with Kuyt covering his forays into attack, I can't see why he won't be worth the money. P.S No one cares what Merson says, just like I don't care that Sherringham said we'll win the title. The only thing that matters is what Rafa, the Players, the Fans and the club says.
ReplyDeletei think the truth is that we are just one attacker from winning the league...who should it be...
ReplyDeleteGiven the fact that Johnson has only managed 15 assists in his entire career so far (2002-present), I'd say that was highly improbable.
ReplyDeleteI don't dispute that he is a good player - he undoubtedly is and I'm glad we signed him. 18m is a ridiculous amount of money to spend though.
Incidentally, Johnson has never managed more than 6 assists in one season. Steve Finnan got 8 in 2006/7 and 7 in 2005/6.
Finnan cost 3.5m

ReplyDeleteWhat's wrong with paying £18m for a full-back? Johnson is a quality player, has plenty of years ahead of him and is english. He has the potential to make a massive impact.
ReplyDeleteIn that article, the writer states:
ReplyDelete"England right-back Johnson, 24, yesterday completed his move from Portsmouth for a fee believed to be £17million, although much of that will be offset by money still owed from Peter Crouch’s transfer to Fratton Park last summer."
it's clear that the Peter Crouch part is pure supposition, as there is no supporting evidence/quotes. Furthermore, the writer states the fee is 'believed to be 17m', which is again guesswork.
As I said earlier, there is no evidence that the money owing from Crouch will offset the Johnson purchase. It's likely, but if it was , why is there no official word on this? It's not something that needs to be kept a secret, is it?
Paul Merson?
ReplyDeleteTell you what Paul me old fatty cock sparra bet you a bottle of Scotch that he's not overpriced.
Know what a mean?
Paul Merson's opinion is irrelevant as he is in no way considered a guru on all things football - he is an ex-pro and, as with many of them, he carries too much bias to present a fair assessment on anything - admittedly, this is in my opinion. You state that you agree with him. Why? Glen Johnson is the best attacking right back in England currently (together maybe with Bosingwa in my view) and is a decent enough defender. In todays style of football, it is essential to have wingbacks that press forward and have very good delivery. Merson himself states that 'there are not 15 world class wingers so is a right back THAT important (not that I value Merson's opinion - unless I can make it work for me ;) )
ReplyDeleteTo be honest, I read your comments on all things Liverpool and I think you would find it hard to dislike Rafa - or at VERY least make a positive comment about the man. I'd LOVE to know why this is? If we did win the league this year, would you give credit where credit is due? Or must we just wait and see?
Wasn't he available for 7M last summer and 9M in january...
ReplyDeletei think u blame parry for not seizing that oppurtunity then...
I really think we liverpool fans have the mindset that all transfers must be bargain to pay the possible least amount...
if barca has paid 29M euros + 6m on add-ons, ramos...29M euro....and they proved their worth.....so we are reallly walkin ig good steps...
I don't agree with Merson's opinion because I value it or he has some stunning insight into football; I agree with it because he happens to have the same opinion as me. Lots of people arrived at that view indepently of Merson ;-)
ReplyDeleteI have made MANY positive comments about Rafa. In fact, I have supported him on many occasions. Examples:
1. Supporting him when it looked like he'd get the sack: Liverpool FC: A footballing phoenix ready to rise from the ashes
2. Giving him credit for revitalising Steven Gerrard: Rafa's Steven Gerrard masterstroke
3. Criticising Gerrard for not supporting Rafa in public in the midst of his spat with Hicks and Gillett: Gerrard exposes his lack of support for beleagured Benitez
4. Supporting him when he subbed Gerrard vs. Everton: Gerrard 'hurt' by Rafa the Merciless
There have been lots of other times in other articles that I've given Rafa credit. Over the last year though, my opinion of him him has plummeted, mainly due to his poor treatment of players, needless public spats, using the media to further his personal agenda and general trampling over the principles of the club in his dictatorial attempt to gain absolute control over LFC.
Where are my posts? Am I going mental?
ReplyDeleteAiyic - if you click on your user name, all the comments you've made so far are stored in your profile. You've made 4 comments so far, all of which were on the Michael laudrup thread. Did you post on this thread too?
ReplyDeleteI didn't know you had your own site. Nice one :) I'll add a link to it on the homepage.
ReplyDeleteIf you ever want to write for this site I'd love to have you onboard ;)
ReplyDeleteMerson Knows nowt, i remember him laughing at Liverpools chances for beating Barcelona in front of Jamie RedKnap and we all know how that turned out, you might as well be asking my cat for his opinion
ReplyDeleteMerson is a fool for suggesting that the only puprose of a top class right back is to stop the opposing winger. That is only one of his roles. As the manager has clearly stated, Johnson is good going forward and will looked upon to bring alot to our attack. I think everyone all agrees that $18M was a bit much but what everyone who is really bitching about the move seem to forget is
ReplyDeletea) the market has been truly inflated by the the likes of Real Madrid
b) u always pay a premium on English talent and
c) what were the transfer costs for the top RB of the world (alves for $30M, Maicon was being quoted @ $22M+).
Dunno whether Merson is a Liverpool hater or not but his statement and weak supporting rational def point in that direction
An England regular for under £20million in today's market is fair enough. When you consider that Wayne Bridge cost a couple of million less than Johnson and he's not half as good - nearly as young - nor is he an England regular it really puts it into perspective.
ReplyDeleteDrugs have rotted Merson's brain; you've only got to listen to him on a Saturday afternoon to realise that... I'm gutted he chose the dippers, but we'll still win the the league!!!
Cheers, but I'm nowhere near good enough. But thanks for linking me.
ReplyDeleteI stand corrected then .. Waiting to read your comments when we finally lift the Prem trophy at the end of the season.
ReplyDeleteWe are on the brink of a massive season merson nows that and i have to say in commentry i dont think there is any one who hates Liverpool like this man i have emailed him personally and asked what his problem is with us. Back to GJ after only a couple of games the talent is ousing out of the guy he is class and will prove to be the missing link if the other key players stay fit we have paid our 4,5 mill for average defenders lets give rafa a pat on the back for this one.
ReplyDelete18m does seem above the odds, but the proof of the pudding...and all that. Johnson is a player that was a Chelsea regular, only for him to fall fowl of one Mr.J Mourinho. He went off with his tail between his legs to unpopular dial-a-manager Pompey, but eventually faught his way back into the England squad.
ReplyDeleteHe could have just fallen off the face of the Earth, but showed great strength of character by building up his reputation again at a club that - but for great fortune in winning the FA Cup facing Cardiff City - normally wouldn't have much realistic ambition of re-staocking the trophy-room. Rafa is correct in identifying these as traits needed for this seasons big push. Arbeloa was better than most would care to say, but he didn't have that extra layer to his personality to make him a battler.
I actually feel we're quite fortunate to get him without much hoopla. Nobody else was making much noise about him, except maybe for Man City - who weren't they making noises about!?
.He is coming into his prime
.He'll want to build on his good season
.He will want prove that he was worth the fuss
All reasons to think we've done good business.
I wouldn't pay too much to what Mrs Merson has to say - he does have a painfully obvious begrudging of Liverpool, that even I can see. Click link to see what I mean.
dont put that into account pal. wheatther they own you 10mil or not, you have still payed 18mil for him. let say if you do not buy glen, you will definitely collect that 7mil and buy a decent player( i am not saying he is not a decent player though) but the combination of recieving 7mil from him and paying 11mil for glen is 18mil. so dont go to that logic. YOU HAVE PAYED 18MIL ON GLEN, NOT 10MIL YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT AND I STILL FELL HE IS NOT WORTH THAT KIND OF MONEY. GLEN IS NOT ALL THAT GOOD BUT HE IS GOOD IN OFFENSIVE. UNFORTUNATELY HE IS BAD IN DEFENDING AND THAT IS THE PLOBLEM LIVERPOOL WILL BE FACING. FACT RAFA SPEND BIG. I AM PORTSMOUTH FAN THOUGH SO I KNOW EVERYTHING ABOUT GLEN. GOOD PLAYER THOUGH.
ReplyDeleteglen johnson is NOT BEST RIGHT BACK IN ENGLAND. HE ONLY HAD ONE GOOD SEASON WITH PORTSMOUTH AND THAT DOES NOR QUARANTEED HIM AS BEST RIGHT BACK IN ENGLAND . SO ARE YOU SAYING EVEN IF HE FADED NEXT SEASON HE IS STILL BEST RIGHT BACK? THE ANSWER IS NO.... HE IS WAYYY BEHIND SAGNA AND BOSINGWA IN MY OPINION. HE IS NOT WORTH EVEN 12MIL AND WHEN I FOUND THAT WE GOT 18MIL FOR HIM I SAID WE ARE DIONG A GOOD BUSINESS AND I WOULD LIKE TO THANK PORTSMOUTH CHAIRMAN FOR WONDERFUL BUSINESS WITH LIVERPOOL. THIS IS THE BEST DEAL FOR THE CLUB OVER THE DECADE. GLEN IS GOOD PLAYER BUT HE IS AVERAGE.
ReplyDeletePAL DO NOT INSULT HIM HE IS ONLY FRANANT HIS OPINION. HE IS RIGHT. HE IS NOT WORTH 18MIL. RAFA KNOWS WHAT HE IS DOING BUT HE ALSO THINK HE HAS DONE A BAD BUSINESS. LET ALL SEE IF GLEN WORHTH THAT KIND OF MONEY.
ReplyDeleteMerson has a point in all fairness no right back is worth that, but he does give us a few different options in attack aswell as on the left side if needed, so Johnno isn't really restricted to just playing at right back, and English players are overpriced, but Johnno is one of the better young ones floating around. Just hope its injury free.
ReplyDeleteGLEN JOHNSON IS NOT DANI ALVES AND SERGIO RAMOS AND I DISAGREE WITH YOUR COMENT PAL IT WILL BE GOOD TO DEFEND WELL MORE THAN OFFENDING. GERARD AND TORRES ARE CAPABLE OF SCORING GOALS FOR YOU SO YOU WILL NEED MORE VERSATILE PLAYER TO DEFEND FOR YOU. SCORING 3 AND CONCEDING 4, WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE. DONT ALSO REMEMBER THAT MANCHESTER UNITED WANT THE LEAGUE BCOS OF THIER VERSATILE DEFENDERS. I WOULD LIKE TO SCORE 1 AND CONCEDE 0.
ReplyDeleteI MEAN WON.
ReplyDeleteIF GLEN WORTH 18MIL THEN LUCAS WORTH 20MIL.
ReplyDeleteDANI ALVES WAS LALIGA BEST RIGHT BACK FOR 4SEASONS AND NOW I CAN SAY HE IS 4TH BEST RIGHT BACK IN THE WORLD SO HE IS WORTH EVERY PENNY. KAKA WORTH THAT MONEY BCOS HE WAS THE BEST PLAYER IN THE WORLD. C RONALDO WORTH THAT MONEY BCOS HE IS E=THE BEST PLAYER IN THE WOLRD. GLEN JOHNSON IS NOWHERE NEAR 13 BEST RIGHT BACK. HE ONLY HAD ONE GOOD SEASON. IF HE IS WORHT 18MIL THEN HANGELAD ( FULHAM PLAYER) WHO HAD ONE GOOD SEASON IS WORTH 20MIL.
ReplyDeleteDONT PUT THAT INTO ACCOUNT PAL. EITHER THEY OWN YOU 7MIL OR NOT YOU HAVE STILL PAYED 18MIL FOR HIM. IF YOU DID NOT BUY HIM YOU WOULD HAVE COLLCTED THAT MONEY FROM THEM SO DONT SAY THAT. YOU DID NOT PAY 10MIL FOR HIM BUT RATHER 18MIL.
ReplyDeleteBOSINGWA IS FAR GOOD PLAYER THAN GLEN JOHNSON AND STILL COST 2MIL LESS. SAGNA IS BETEER THAN GLEN AND STILL COST 10MIL LESS. WHAT YOU PIONT PAL. DONT SAY YOU PAY 10MIL FOR HIM. YOY PAYED 18MIL FOR AVERAGE PLAYER SO GET WITH IT. CROUCH MONEY IS STILL YOUR MONEY AND YOU ADD 11MIL TO THAT SO THAT MATHEMATICAL LOGIC SAY YOU PAYED 18MIL FRO HIM.
ReplyDeleteGLEN IS NOT WORTH THAT MONEY SO THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH IT. HE IS AVERAGE AND HE ONLY HAD ONE GOOD SEASON. HE IS NOT WORTH THAT MONEY.
ReplyDeleteHE IS OVERPRICED. HE DONT DESERVED THAT HUGE MONEY . HE IS AVERAGE
ReplyDeleteHE IS NOT A FOOL PAL. WHAT HE IS SAYING IS NOTHING BUT TRUTH. GLEN IS NOT WORTH THAT MONEY SO GET WITH IT. HE IS AVERAGE PLAYER AND NOT BETTER THAN SAGNA AND BOSINGWA WHOSE COST 2-10LESS RESPECTIVELY.
ReplyDeletePAL GLEN DOES NOT WORTH THAT MONEY. AND DONT COMPARE HIM TO WAYNE BCOS THEY ARE NOT COMPARABLE. YOU PEOPLE YOU SAYING HE IS BEST RIGHT BACK IN ENGLAND WHICH IS NOT TRUE. MERSON IS RIGHT OF WHAT HE IS SAYING. HE DOES NOT WORTH THAT MONEY. SAGNA AND BOSINGWA ARE BOTH BETTER THAT HIM AND THEY COST LESS.
ReplyDeleteMERSON DOES NOT HATE LIVERPOOL BUT LOVES THE CLUB. HE IS SAYING WHAT IS RIGHT BUT NOT WHAT IS WRONG PAL. GLEN DOES NOT WORTH THAT MONEY SO GET WITH IT.
ReplyDeleteYOU ARE WRONG PAL. DONT SAY HE IS ENGLAND RIGHT BACK AVAILABLE FOR THAT MONEY. NO... HE IS NOT EVEN WORTH 10MIL. HE IS NOT. IF HE IS THEN LUCAS IS BRAZIL CENTRAL MILDFIELDER AVAILABLE FOR 30MI.
ReplyDeleteDennis,
ReplyDeleteWhat's with your "HE'S NOT WORTH THAT MONEY" rant here?
Well please suggest to us who is the best English right back in the country? and what is the value for that player? Compare that to the Best right back in the world, whoever it is. You will see that english players prices alre always inflated. Try thi s and then you can keep talking bollocks.
ahhh but your basing your opinion when he was playing in an average side,,,,now he's at LFC Rafa will bring the best out of him.
ReplyDeleteBosingwa might have cost 2 mil less,,but and it's a big but,,he wasn't bought this transfer window was he.....he was bought in May 2008 at a cost of 16.3 million,,,what would he cost now???
ReplyDeleteHave to agree with Dennis,,no matter what is or is not offset, we still paid 18 mil..........
ReplyDeletePAL TRY TO UNDERSTAND AND BE HONEST, SAGNA AND BOSINGWA IS FARRRR AHEAD OF HIM. YESSS ENGLAND PLAYERS PRICES ARE HIGH BUT YOU HAVE TO UNDERSTAND THAT 18MIL FOR GLEN WHO ONLY HAD ONE GOOOODDDD SEASON IS STUPID.
ReplyDeleteI think it 12-15m would have been suffice, crouch money or not. But he will be with us for years to come, has improved our starting IX and is english. All good signs of money well spent AND hes the right man for the job.
ReplyDeleteNot many complained about bosingwa costing 16.3. Its chelsea/madrid and citeh that have inflated an already bloated market anyway. so its tuff tities for the rest of us.
i would like to agree with a guest that made the point that you never really can say how much a player is worth untill after a season or maybe a few...degen cost nout but fans have moaned about the wages weve wasted...a few years ago managers never bought for a 'quick fix' now it seems all fans want is instant results, forgetting that some players need a little time to feel at home and play their role.
I seriously cant wait for saturday! ..But the future of football scares me when a club with liverpools stature goes thro the financial shits like we have since the yanks came. very sad
fucking sack rafa and get them yanks out bring in dic get top manger like jose or kenny daglish bkin and tilte 19 be coming home were it belongs let rafa piss of bk to spain :)
ReplyDelete
