FOOTBALL CHEATS: No 5 - Wayne Rooney (Blackburn v Manchester United, 2008)

The jury is still out on whether Wayne Rooney was up to his old tricks against Arsenal yesterday at Old Trafford, but he has dived many times in the past, and here is one clear-cut example.

Rooney is usually better at disguising his dives (see the Arsenal dive from yesterday!) but in this case, it was blatant cheating. Yes, the Blackburn keeper made contact but Rooney dived *after* this.  It's like his thought process was 10 seconds behind the actual incident.  If he had dived at the moment the keeper touched him, the penalty probably would've been given.  Instead, Rooney realised he'd missed his opportunity to go down and dived after a small delay.

In 2006, Rooney made the following statement in an interview:

"I'd never dive. I’d like to think of myself as an honest player. That’s the way I play. I don’t like diving, football doesn’t need it.”

Just like Steven Gerrard, Rooney's public comments about diving completely contradict what he does in practice.

As for yesterday's 'incident' - will it make it into this series? You'll have to wait and see ;-)

NB. Before anyone starts going on about Steven Gerrard, I've already written two articles about his diving:

---->> Rafa slams Drogba for diving but Steven Gerrard is just as bad. And here is the proof.

---->> Steven Gerrard: Still a diver

  5. Personally I don't think its wrong in that situation. If you are fouled why is it wrong to play to it? If you don't you get F all from the refs.

  6. Had you read what the author wrote, then you wouldn't have to make this useless comment.

  7. He falls over just when he realised that he won't be getting the ball anymore and not when the contact takes place. Therefor it's a dive. He should have seen a red instead of a yellow for his low kung-fu kick later in the clip.

  8. i agree with anteater, he threw in a two-footed flying kick and gets a yellow card. this was obviously a reaction to the fact he didn't get a pen and as such is very cynical.

  9. If he was playing for the 'Pool', we wouldn't be slagging him off. The lads got loads of heart and despite who he plays for, he is a cracking player. Although he was already going down for the penalty before he was touched on Saturday.. Well i had too put that in so i don't come across to much like a turn-coat.. ;)

  10. Remember the dive against Arsenal in 04 (I think) when Sol Campbell "took" him down?
