Barnes, Beardsley, Aldridge, McMahon, Nicol...it just doesn't get any better than this.
I still get goosebumps watching the goals below and remembering how exciting it was to be a Liverpool fan during that golden period. It's such a tragedy these magnificent players never got the chance to strut their stuff in Europe; if they had, I have no doubt that Marco Van Basten, Ruud Gullit and the rest of AC Milan's players at that time would be two European Cup winners medals worse off right now.
Just imagine what today's Liverpool could do with a player of John Barnes' genius in the side...
Enjoy!

Thanks for the memoirs Jaimie, nice one and your dead right about the John Barnes comment!
ReplyDeleteHi iskoppa - John Barnes is my favourite ever player - I could watch his genius skills 24/7! I have every season review video from the mid 80s (when they first started being produced) until now, and I watch the Barnes era vids endlessly. If we had Barnesy in the current team, we'd be about 15 points ahead of Man U right now.
ReplyDeleteI can so understand you watching them over and over again, Barnesy is just such a Gentleman, plus one of the Greats!
ReplyDeleteBarnes' touch was poetry in motion. The weight, bend and accuracy of his passing was a sight to behold. Some of his crosses gave as much joy as actual goals. If there was a "cross of the season" competition, we would be watching 10 Barnes' crosses to try and pick the winner from.
ReplyDeleteSpot on Aiyic - I never tire of waxing lyrical about Barnesy. For me, he was simply a once in a lifetime player, and is as iskoppa said above, a real gentleman. Perfect Liverpool material.
