End for Sturridge? Liverpool still keen to sign 'magnificent' £40m sensation with 33 goals and assists this season

Liverpool continue to be linked with a move to sign one of the SPL's top strikers.

Last month, Sky Sports claimed that the Reds were planning a January 'offer' for Celtic striker Moussa Dembele, and reports on Monday claim that:

* Liverpool are still tracking Dembele ahead of a possible summer transfer.

* The Reds face stiff competition from Arsenal, Chelsea, Man City, and Bayern Munich.

Dembele was linked with Liverpool back in July, but he ultimately ended up signing for ex-Reds boss Brendan Rodgers, who recently insisted that the young striker is going nowhere.

When asked last week about his future, Dembele told reporters:

"It's easy not to get distracted. I'm a very calm kind of guy and I don't really let this type of thing get in my head. I don't really listen to what has been said about me"

Reds legend Jamie Carragher is a fan, and in a recent column for the Daily Mail, he described the £40m-rated youngster as 'magnificent', and enthused:

"Brendan Rodgers has unearthed a gem. Celtic are going to struggle to keep him but if they do eventually sell him, then it is going to be for a fee 20 or 30 times more than their initial outlay".

£30m-£40m for Dembele seems excessive, but but given the ridiculous fees paid for similar players over the last few years, it's not beyond the realm of possibility. Plus, Dembele has 27 goals in 41 games so far this season (13 in the SPL), albeit at a comparatively inferior level of football.

To be honest, I'd expect a greater goal return in the SPL for a player who'll possibly cost £30-£40m. If Dembele can't score more regularly against the minnows of the SPL, what are the chances of him doing the business (consistently) in the Premier League?
