Transfer Stunner: Liverpool could sign 'world-class' €25m 'beast' with 457 goals/assists in 572 games

In what is surely the most improbable transfer rumour of the year, Liverpool are being linked with summer move for Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who is reportedly on the outs at PSG.

A report today in The Independent claims that:

* Liverpool 'could sign' Zlatan Ibrahimovic for a 'cut-price' fee of €25m (£18m).

* PSG will not allow Edinson Cavani to leave, which allegedly means that Ibrahimovic 'could be allowed to go'.

Ibrahimovic remains one of the world's top strikers, which is why this deal will never happen in a million years. Indeed, according to Chelsea striker Diego Costa, Ibra is one of the best strikers of all time. In February, he told reporters:

"Zlatan is a beast. He is one of those players that I like because of his character and his quality. He is among the best strikers in football history"

Ibrahimovic's stunning goals/assists record certainly adds weight to Costa's contention:

* 321 goals/136 assists (457 total) in 572 appearances.
* Goal/assist every 1.2 games over his entire career.

Superb stats, and even at the age of 33, Ibrahimovic - described by Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard as 'world-class' is still doing the business. This season, for example, he has 33 goals/assists in 33 games for PSG, which proves he's still operating at the highest level.

As such, why would Ibrahimovic swap PSG for Liverpool, a team that crashed out of the Champions League in the early stages, and is struggling to qualify for next season's competition? It's a nice dream, but that's exactly what it is: a pipe dream.

  1. Now before I say this, I fully believe this is bs and a dream at best. However, I suppose the move would make a bit of sense...

The only few things that Ibra hasn't done in his career are A) Play in the EPL and B) Take a struggling team (by his standards) to the top (aside from maybe early career teams). These aren't really things he needs to do, but he's happy at PSG so if he were to move perhaps there will be some personal satisfaction in doing so before he retires. LFC and Utd are really the only options for him if he wants to do both. We aren't exactly at the top right now, and we're the only "low" team that can afford his contractual demands too.

Again, there's probably a 0.00001% chance of this being true, but I could see why it would make some sense for Zlatan to take a step down.

  2. IIbrahimovic is known as a bit of a trouble-maker in the dressing room so obviously that would have to be weighed up against his obvious talents. I think this story is very likely untrue as other reports have him going to the MLS and given Liverpool's reluctance to offer decent wages and the absence of Champion's League football next season it is unlikely he would choose to come to Liverpool....

  3. The Independent claims Liverpool 'could sign' Zlatan Ibrahimovic for a 'cut-price' fee of €25m.Which suggests they believe his true market value higher.Ibrahimovic will be 34 two months into next season. How much more do they think he's worth?!

  4. don't know where the news come from, especially after Ibrahimovic has said himself that PSG is gonna be his last club in Europe and his agent has already shot down the rumor

it would make me laugh for him to come and hear people raving about him while they criticize Balotelli for being lazy and walking on the pitch though (always makes me smile to see people's hypocrisy)

  5. He isn't a troublemaker, he is controversial and to some people arrogant and rude and others like me, hilarious.

All in all though, I love this guy, but will he keep his form next year? I'm pretty sure that he did say something about retiring some time soon.

  6. I actually laughed when I read this story earlier

  7. That is one mercenary and egomaniac, if we decide to pay silly wages and tell him he is The man, he could come even with us in EL. With CL, I think we stand a fair chance- salary being the only question actually- some Brazilian from Benfica or PSV is more likely to turn us down for a 'bigger' club than him.

    Don't want him though..

  8. I believe that when you take into account taxes, image rights and bonuses etc. but exclude independent sponsorships and the like, then Zlatan is the highest paid player in the world.

I have an inkling this deal won't happen.

  9. why will zlatan come to liverpool to be honest?

  10. I like B R but his record on signing strikers is WORSE EVER - Borini Balo Markovic Lambert Even Sturidge misses half the games and now he fancies theo Walcott - it does not bode well. Someone should be made to pay for signing Balo - if you take a chance then you pay a price --P S This guy is too risky - FORGET HIM.,Big quesrtion now is does Stevie G start and I am of the opinion that B R will bench him for first 60 minutes - Villa are on a roll and unless we pick up then my money is on them

  11. Zlatan on Steven Gerrard: "He's a fantastic player, always someone who plays at a high level," said the Sweden captain. "He's a good fighter and has good skills also and is strong with the ball. He feels more like an international player than a normal English player. Whenever I play against Steven the coach always says, 'Be careful with that player because he can make the difference.'

"He is respected throughout Europe but I would like to see Steven in, of course Liverpool is a big club, but in a big international club. I would like to see that also for England because it is very exciting when someone goes abroad and shows who he is in another competition. For me a fantastic player can make a difference in every country, wherever he plays, and I'm pretty sure that Steven would do that also. Of course, he is playing in one of the best leagues in the world now but he's a fantastic player."

    .
I think he doesn't consider Liverpool as a big international club and I see no chance of him coming to Liverpool. Its a shame that he never played in EPL. What a player!!

  12. Gerrard response : "I'm a big fan of Zlatan as a player but I'm not going to take his advice," Gerrard said. "I am very happy at Liverpool and in my opinion I am at one of the biggest clubs in the world, a team that has won the European Cup five times, so I'm happy where I am, but thanks for his opinion."

    .
I know that no player is bigger than the club but when Gerrard goes, Liverpool might not be as relevant as it is now. When people think of Liverpool, they think of Gerrard and vice-versa. I wish there were few more Gerrards in the world.

  16. I can't see this ever happening. Even if he was interested would FSG pay the wages?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Apparently Ibe was at it too but no mention of this - yet

    ReplyDelete
  18. Allegedly Raheem forced him to do it.

He said he's one of the cool guys then

    ReplyDelete
  19. Holy cow! Thanks for brightening my day! :D

  20. Did BR say he wants walcot? or was it walcots agent saying it to the papers because he's in talks about a new contract?

  30. I'd bet you my life that if Klopp could choose between us or City, he'd choose us

    ReplyDelete
  31. Considering hisage and that 18m i would not take him the same with Higuain and cavani we dont need names we need Talent with both present and future i would rathe rhave Lacezzete

    ReplyDelete
  32. I think the more alarming thing is Ibes dress sense... Those jeans.... WTF

    ReplyDelete
  33. I'd like to think Jurgen Klopp would choose us over City, but wouldn't bet my life on it.Going to clubs like Man City, PSG or Chelsea must be like playing a real life game of PC's Football Manager. You don't have to build slowly and you can afford to make mistakes. It's quick squad construction funded by mega rich owners.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Wow! He must be peeved at constantly losing his players.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Fowler I hope he does.

  36. Joao Texeira breaks leg playing for Brighton.....

    ReplyDelete
  37. I was thinking the same thing.Jordan Ibe looked like he was attacked by a pack of dogs.If that's the latest fashion trend... count me out!

    ReplyDelete
  38. this will be another martin kelly story, showing great potential, then serious injury, then fade away.....sad....hope I'm wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  39. ah give him a break, he probably cant afford a decent pair, he's only on 30 grand a week or something poor lad, next season when he wants 100 grand he'll be saying he hasnt enough to buy a new pair of strides.

    ReplyDelete
  40. We would need to build the team around him. Which would likely improve us in attack but for how long?

    ReplyDelete
  41. So Klopp who has had to put up with being the financial whipping boy of Bayern, always losing his best players will chooses us over money bags city? Why exactly?

    ReplyDelete
  42. You almost get a free pass as a manager with these clubs too even if you're sacked. Ancellotti was sacked by Chelsea but his reputation wasn't tarnished. Same with Pellegrini.
Klopp's probably thinking I'll only get 2-3 years out of city, make an absolute fortune, then jobs like Liverpool and Arsenal will still be possible

    ReplyDelete
  43. Nope. I'm also in favour of keeping Mario.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Spot on Jock.Life expectancy at these clubs is short but reputations remain intact.Managers who take those jobs can also afford to make mistakes in the transfer market and still compete.
Look at Pellergrini's buys. He's bought a boatload of garbage, but Man City were still very strong. At least until this period. He relied on previous managers superstar buys to bail him out.You don't get the same luxury at Liverpool. You make big transfer mistakes. It's usually costly.

    ReplyDelete
  45. He just strikes me as a guy would be a lot more fond of Liverpool than City.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Because Klopp is with the light side of the force.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Since when were PSG a big international club?

    ReplyDelete
  48. He might give Raheem et al some valuable finishing and movement lessons, too.

    ReplyDelete
  49. yep definively but i don't think we will search for a new manager this year

    ReplyDelete
  50. He borrowed it from Enrique.
    Trust me mate, insider information

  51. So what you're saying is Sterling is a lot like Charles Manson: a master manipulator who gets people to do terrible things for his amusement.

    ReplyDelete
  52. On the bright side, we haven't met our douchebag quota now that Suarez is gone. Zlatan would be the new standard-bearer in that regard.

    ReplyDelete
  53. What, building the flash hotels along with all the other immigrants....

sorry that was harsh and unfair, He doesn't even have the skills to become forced labour...

    ReplyDelete
  54. Our under 21 results are PATHETIC - We need to sack the Manager - he has a big reputation but delivers NOWT

    ReplyDelete
  55. We can see the headlines now, Balotelli seen following Ibra around like a love sick teenager.....Ibra seen slapping him down and telling him No Mario! No.....There can only be one!.

PS... Tough news for Texeira lastnight breaking his leg away to Huddersfield.

    ReplyDelete
  56. He's not arrogant, he just believe everything he says...

    ReplyDelete
  57. wow otherwise the Ligue 1 is said to be easy and now it is at the highest level
that hypo crisy there : /

    ReplyDelete
  58. Or perhaps Charles Grodin: really good accountant (Midnight Run), and a family man who gets overwhelmed by his families endearment for a St. Bernard (Beethoven)

    ReplyDelete
  59. Rodgers did want Balotelli. There is plenty of evidence to support this, but no evidence to show BR didn't want him.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I love Charles Grodin. Especially in Clifford.

    ReplyDelete
  61. He's got a long way to go to get to Suarez's level, to be fair to the lad.
