Another week, another must-win league game for Liverpool. After three defeats in five matches, there's very little margin for error, but with Everton also in the midst of bad run, it's going to be a very difficult game for Brendan Rodgers' team.
* Joe Allen, Glen Johnson, and John Flanagan remain injured.
* Jordan Henderson and Philippe Coutinho could feature in the squad. When asked on Thursday about the duo, Brendan Rodgers told reporters:
"It's too early to rule them in or out, with a couple of days still to go until the game. We're hopeful that they can be involved "
* Daniel Sturridge may also return, which is great news for the team:
"We'll be very happy to have him [Sturridge] back and we hope that can be this weekend"
If Sturridge, Henderson, and Coutinho return, that's £58m worth of talent coming back into the team, which is a massive boost.
Prior to LFC's midweek Capital One Cup victory, Suso had basically been ignored by Rodgers, but after his impressive performance against Middlesbrough, it looks like the Spaniard may be rewarded with a place in the Everton squad. When asked about the possibility, Rodgers enthused:
"You saw his quality when he came on in the game; he had wonderful feet and wonderful technique. It was nice to see him score off his right foot and he's definitely one that comes into the reckoning."
Suso deserves a chance, but don't hold your breath - when Rodgers praises a player on the Thursday before a game, that player invariably ends up on the bench (or not in the squad). In recent weeks, this has happened to both Sterling and Coutinho.
Given the opposition, I see Rodgers going for more robust players, so I'd expect to see the following line-up:
----------------- Mignolet
Manquillo ---- Skrtel -- Lovren ------ Moreno
------------------ Gerrard
-------------- Lucas -- Hendo (if fit)
-------- Sterling -------- Lallana
---------------- Balotelli
If Henderson is out, Rodgers might surprise everyone and throw Jordan Rossiter into he mix. I'd personally love to see that, but I doubt it will happen.
Predicting a 1-1 draw, Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson bemoaned his old club's 'poor' form, and suggested that more dropped points are on the horizon. He told the BBC:
"I can see this ending up in a draw. I think Everton would take one, while Liverpool would be disappointed, but I cannot back Liverpool to win because I don't think they are playing well enough".
My prediction: 2-2

gerard and lucas in starting line?dont think so
ReplyDeleteHope Gerard and Lucas are not starting because 2/2 would be an extremely hopeful result.
ReplyDeleteIf both Gerrard and Lucas start then it will be West Ham tenfold.
ReplyDeleteHenderson is as tough as nails so pretty sure he will start. If Sturridge is not fully fit (cannot actually see him starting) and pending Coutinho's fitness then I would go with
ReplyDelete-----------------Mignolet---------------
Manquillo-Lovren-Sakho-Moreno
-----------------Gerrard---------------- (or Lucas)
---------Hendo---------Lallana------
-----------------Coutinho--------------
--------Sterling----------Balotelli----
The only way we will beat Everton is if we take the game to them.I just want to see our pressing game in action again. Hopefully that is the plan today otherwise we are in for yet another disappointing result.
If Gerard and Lucas are in starting lineup...we go down....DO NOT play well when those 2 are being defensive without creativity in midfield....too much already being expected of Stirling as well.My heart wants Liverpool win,but with the current lack of form across the whole team, the head says Everton....hope I am so wrong !!!!
ReplyDeleteBrendan has to contemplate dropping gerrard if he's form continues as it is.
ReplyDeleteThere is NO WAY that Gerrard place on his current form justified and is playing on sentiment.
The question remains, does Brendan have the nuts to drop him?
Loyality to a player has cost many a Manager there job at Liverpool.
Never thought I'd say it, but I think we'll miss Joe Allen's energy and pressing today. I think he's a better option than foulbyLucas these days.
ReplyDeleteIt is either Gerrard or Lucas. For me it does not really matter who of the two start as long as we do not start with both and only if our midfield is set up to press and chase the ball and force the opposition back. If Can is fit then for me either Lucas or Stevie need to be on the bench.
ReplyDeleteThe other glaring issue is our defence and the lack of communication thereof. Our defending at set pieces is rubbish. If the problems at the back are not fixed then we will continue to leak goals.
........................................balotelli...............borini
ReplyDelete......................................................sterling
......................................lallana...................henderson
.....................................................gerrard
......................................moreno........................manquillo
...................................................lovren........skrtel
..........................................................mignolet
jaimie i thought you knew better then lucas and gerrard dont work together
sterling cant play up front he is not a striker
ReplyDeletehas nver started a match up front but yet you continuously in every line up put him there
We have been over this before have we not?
ReplyDeleteif sterling is a striker mignolet is a midfielder
ReplyDeleteSterling even played as a striker for the U21's before Kenny introduced him in 2012. I am not even going to argue. I made my point the last time round.
ReplyDeletecarragher played as a striker in the youth academy
ReplyDeleteyou made no pint last time around btw i clearly won that one
Starthed off his career at youth level as a striker. We are talking how many years back?
ReplyDeleteCan Sterling be tyransformed into a centre back? Please, if you are going to make comparisons then make logical ones.
Someone please tell BR that you cannot play Gerrard and Lucas in the same team...together they are just too slow and lack that drive that Allen and Hendo bring to the team. We still need our captain fantastic but I would Personally love to see young Rossiter or Suso take the place of Lucas, who just doesn't cut it as a Liverpool quality player.
ReplyDeletei THINK EVERYONE AGREES LUCAS AND GERRARD IN SAME TEAM WONT WORK ANYMORE
ReplyDeleteI really don't see Brendan going with Lucas & Gerrard together again. He's tried it twice this season and it went horribly wrong. More often than not he learns from his mistakes.
ReplyDeleteIf memory serves me correct, we have never lost more than two games on the trot under Rodgers. Fingers crossed!
ReplyDeleteThat would explain his goalkeeping performances then:-)
ReplyDeleteMartinez thinks it might work just one more time
ReplyDeleteWhy are you so adamant that Sterling can't play striker? If someone can adapt to No.10 from a winger, then I'm sure there is a very good chance he could at least play the Owen type of striking role. Personally, I think he is a brighter, more rounded player than Owen already.
ReplyDeleteAt the very least you would need to give him some time to say one way or the other. I am not saying it is certain to work out but your kind of closed-book thinking when he has never had a run in that position is puzzling to say the least.
Do not jinx it mate!
ReplyDeleteSterling started off as a defender
ReplyDeleteLiverpool need a positive result from this game to provide some respite from all the negativity and regain much needed confidence cheers
ReplyDeleteI would consider a 3-man defense in this game
ReplyDeleteMignolet
Manquillo-Skrtel-Lovren-Sakho-Moreno
Gerrard Hendo(if fit)/Lallana
Suso
Mario-Sterling
Or if Studge is fit, play Sterling in the middle.
With every added week that Sturridge is out, the more I hate Roy Hodgson.
ReplyDeleteTony Hibbert starts- if he scores today, I will cry.
ReplyDeleteLiverpool XI: Mignolet, Manquillo, Moreno, Lovren, Skrtel, Gerrard, Henderson, Markovic, Lallana, Sterling, Balotelli
ReplyDeleteSubstitutes: Jones, Enrique, Toure, Lucas, Coutinho, Suso, Lambert.
No Lucas and Gerrard in the same team. Good start already!
ReplyDelete4-3-3 I think.
ReplyDelete----------------Mignolet---------------
Manquillo-Skrtel-Lovren-Moreno
-----------------Gerrard----------------
----------Hendo--------Lallana-------
Markovic-----Balotelli------Sterling
most genuine team we put so far
ReplyDeletemarkovic and sterling working as wingers a real 433
skrtel and lovren can make a good partnership sakhos career is probably over though
IMO markovic should have been put in the reserves after the performance vs middlesbrough and villa
ReplyDeletebut so should have sterling after that 3-1 loss to hull rodgers stuck by him now he is good enough to be linked with real
i am in two minds about this
coleman ,barkley and mccarthy are evertons only good players
ReplyDeleteluckily two out of three are not playing
Let's hope it works
ReplyDeleteMarkovic and lallana start bet we lose
ReplyDeleteHave some faith.
ReplyDeleteHopefully it is not 4-2-3-1 :-o
ReplyDeleteI think another mistake Brendan has made is with his subs like failing to spot the frailties of Gerrard and Lucas early enough and not making decisive changes quick enough. We have options and I hope Suso gets a chance.
ReplyDeleteit is a very good starting lineup. One that can press.
ReplyDeleteOur defence still worries me though.
I think Brendan dropped the partnership of Lovren and Sakho too soon just when it was beginning to take shape. I am scared about Lukaku and how our defence handles him.
ReplyDeleteWhat about Baines Lukaku Naismith Howard Jagielka.
ReplyDeleteYeah, keeps on changing the back four. It is bound to cause problems.
ReplyDeleteAt least the full backs stay constant. We have to play with urgency and steamroll teams to submission.
ReplyDeleteManquillo and Moreno have been a breath of fresh air.
ReplyDeleteBorini is simply not good enough. I really hope he will be sold in January. He is Sunderland kind of player or he should go back to Italy. No Sturridge today... Its going to be a tough game, one that we can definitely lose.
ReplyDeleteCome on man, its a bit harsh. We have injuries, so its the best side we can put out there under the circumstances, which has physical pressence and flair on paper.
ReplyDeleteif lazer uses his pace lifts his head up and runs the channels ill be happy ..if he keeps cutting in field going no where get him off .......the problem for us will be luka all over Gerrard because for all there tattoos skirtal and lovren look anthing but tuff
ReplyDeletethat says to me rogers has no faith in him, which is a real worry having splashed 17m on him
ReplyDeleteid have preferred tino than lazer if im honest but the way they are playing is like saying you would sooner drink piss than petrol
ReplyDeleteSo it is
ReplyDelete----------------Mignolet---------------
Manqiullo Skrtel Lovren Moreno
----------Hend--------Gerrard-------
Markovic----Lallana-----Sterling
----------------Balotelli---------------
We have started well but still look flat. 4-2-3-1 once again not causing any major problems for the oppositions defence.
ReplyDeleteOH MIGNOLET THAT IS SHOCKING. YOU HAVE TO BE MORE COMMANDING!!!
ReplyDeleteI can't deal with Michael Owen ... seriously, worst on-air pundit ever.
ReplyDeleteHow did you get Owen!?
ReplyDeleteNot sure what our plan is for this game but by the looks of things we are not going to score.
ReplyDeleteBT sport
ReplyDeleteevery time there is a chance, theytrip over the ball or something. I'm absolutely over it.
ReplyDeleteLallana looks good and we are getting lots of openings. It is not flat like the others. We need one to go in and the others will fly.
ReplyDelete4-2-3-1. The story of our lives.
ReplyDeleteSerious problems in our decision making in the final third. Everytime something goes wrong.
ReplyDeleteEverton are there for the taking and we are still pussyfooting around.
ReplyDeleteserious lack of quality by both sides
ReplyDeleteI'm already over this season.
ReplyDeleteStill looks like a bunch of guys who don't really know how to play together. No chemistry at all. Plenty of talent out there, they just don't know what their team mates are going to do.
ReplyDeleteIf only we had Allen and Sturridge available.
ReplyDeleteFormation change would help.
ReplyDeleteWe're pretty dire in front of goal. Balotelli is no poacher...
ReplyDeleteim watching it with the sound off and its dreadful
ReplyDeleteI dunno, I think the amount of space players are finding indicates that the shape is right. The ball just isn't finding it's way through the right gaps, but the gaps are there. It's all mis-timed runs and passes and players going in different directions.
ReplyDeleteWe've tried every possible formation this season and been terrible in all of them. We're not playing that bad, we just don't seem to know what to do with ball when it matters.
ReplyDeleteif either everton or Liverpool where playing a team with any kind of form or quality it would be curtains.Slow labored no intensity and zero quality in the final third sums both these teams up
ReplyDeletethe diamond vs Spurs was our best result.
ReplyDeleteThis is no excuse. This is why we spent so much money in the window, to deal with these situations.
ReplyDeletefirst half summary - LFC wasteful.
ReplyDelete4-2-3-1 has not worked once this season yet Rodgers still persists. It is so f******* frustrating!
ReplyDeletethe planets all lined up for us that day Logan im not sure how valid it is to use it as a yard stick
ReplyDeleteAnd we started with the diamond vs West Ham and were 2-0 down inside 8 mins...
ReplyDeletethe irony of it is though is everton are in the same boat. There are gaps you could steer a tank through in liverpools defense its just that everton are poor
ReplyDeleteWith Gerrard and Lucas in the same midfield. What did you expect?
ReplyDeleteWell we have gone 4-2-3-1 and it has not worked once, gone with Stevie and lucas as holding midfielders, gone with Gerrard and Hendo as holding midfielders and still our midfield looks SH!T.
ReplyDeleteIf we go 2 upfront in the second half vs Everton then we will start causing problems. Not sure why Rodgers has not picked up on this???
Suso on , Lazar off and let the diamond rumble..
ReplyDeleteRogers doesn't trust Gerrard as last man
ReplyDeleteStill, it's entertaining football. Chances, penalty shouts, a few nice moments around the box and shots on goal. It's certainly not a tragedy. There will be a goal or two to come, let's just pray that it's at the right end, there isn't going to be much in it.
ReplyDeleteMoreno has been good handling Lukaku, I keep expecting him to get done but he tracks well and has been staying goal side. Pace going both ways, I'm really enjoying watching him play. I think he's a great buy.
BS. We won many games last season with Gerrard as the last man.
ReplyDeletelast season was last season
ReplyDeleteWhat a comeback.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. Let Lallana and Sterling operate wide, Suso can take some space in the middle and get a few balls in the right area. That's what we're missing. Or Coutinho ... is he on the bench?
ReplyDeleteits the best i could do on short notice
ReplyDeleteEvertyon are not struggling at the back. they have had one or two shaky moments but other than that have dealt with us easily.
ReplyDeletePlay two uprfont FFS!
ReplyDeletefirst goal may well settle this game
ReplyDeleteWe are so pathetic.
ReplyDeletelazer no strength or quality
ReplyDeleteOur players aren't concentrating. That was a free header Dejan.
ReplyDeleteAntonio Nunez mark II
ReplyDeleteno communication either in attack or defence
ReplyDeleteWe spent to strengthen our squad. UTD have spent more than anyone and look at what has happened to them so far.
ReplyDeleteRodgers can't see the wood for the trees at the moment. He needs to go back to the way we approached matches last season. he is f****** around and it is going to cost us.
Except for that penalty ... jeez, he's a bit lucky
ReplyDeleteRodgers obviously does no grasp the fact that Henderson is wasted as a holding midfielder. He has contributed f all to this game.
ReplyDeleteWTF is going on???
This is absolute bull. Players getting in each other's way now. What the hell.
ReplyDeleteNow change to a f******* diamond.
ReplyDeletethe passing is abysmal ..both teams could wear the same shirts
ReplyDeleteHe was no star in Portugal didnt expect much more everyones been fooled by the price.
ReplyDeleteabout time on so much lazer as lazy
ReplyDeleteWhy the f*** we went with 4-2-3-1 from the start is completely beyond me.
ReplyDeleteyeeeeeeeeeeeee haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
ReplyDeleteGerrard of course.
ReplyDeleteyesss
ReplyDeleteshould've saved it but goaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaal
ReplyDeleteDon't we just love him !!!!!!
ReplyDeleteLucas won't be able to do that...
ReplyDeleteShould've been lallana that could've given markovic the licence to run with the ball.
ReplyDeleteI am just hoping Allen and Sturridge are back soon.
ReplyDeleteid play lallana before lazer 100 out of 100 times
ReplyDeleteballo should be pulling left on Hibbert and sterling and Moreno should also be slicing him apart. Just feed Sterling.....Hibbert is our portal to success
ReplyDeleteGerrard has been sussed in the libero role just as he was in the no.10. I think you should expect 4-2-3-1 for a while
ReplyDeletecome on balo do better
ReplyDeleteif we play gerrad he should be in the final 3rd or not at all
ReplyDeleteBalotelli will do better if we play 2 upfront. It is as clear as daylight.
ReplyDeleteMoreno and Lovren have been superb today.
ReplyDeleteHe cant get away from anyone anymore, he's got the 'Lucas jog' going on.......
ReplyDeleteagreed. Manquillo too
ReplyDeleteHow will it help him not miss a sitter ?
ReplyDeleteWhen Lukaku comes off the right flank we'll see their real metal then.....
ReplyDeleteOur setup at this point is not made for one up front in any shape or form unless you want to prove me wrong.
ReplyDeleteBalotelli still has to tune up his finishing.
ReplyDeleteFact is they're doing their jobs really well. Lukaku caused endless problems to Arsenal on the right flank.
ReplyDeleteBalotelli is such an Italian
ReplyDeleteWould Sturridge thrive with the formation and tactics of today?
ReplyDeleteWhats that got to do with missing easy chances which he has done frequently.
ReplyDeletehorses for courses. Martinez knows we've been terrible through the middle. Moreno and Manquillo have been excellent all season
ReplyDeleteHe has had f all service.
ReplyDeleteThe best make the most of their chances.
ReplyDeleteLallana got lot of time with the ball unlike markovic but couldn't do anything. Whenever he got the ball he ran with it cluelesly markovic could've done better. As you can see now the team looks much more dangerous when coutinho gets the ball
ReplyDeleteHow many chances clear cut have been created for Balotelli?
ReplyDeleteagreed they dont give an inch if only balo had sterling's strength quite remarkable that sterling seems so much stronger than a guy twice his size
ReplyDeleteYou only need 1 good chance to score 1
ReplyDeleteHow many have we created for him?
ReplyDeleteA few
ReplyDeleteIf that is the case then explain.
ReplyDeleteyou explain he missed an absolute sitter please explain and had other opportunities
ReplyDeleteWhat absolute sitter?
ReplyDeletethats more like it
ReplyDeletehow much better do we look with a short passing game so why oh why do we not do it
ReplyDeleteopen your eyes
ReplyDeleteCome on boys. Just score another goal.
ReplyDeleteYea we're crap, Rodgers doesn't know what he's doing, Gerrard has no place in the team..,
ReplyDeleteWhat are you all saying now???
its all about the baby steps :)
ReplyDeleteLallana = Allen.
ReplyDeleteEnergy, pressure and causes frustration.
he scored a free kick which should of been saved...props to the guy for that but thats it....truth be known we have been very average against a very poor everton
ReplyDeleteHow Martinez hasnt put his £28mill man through the middle yet I'll never know. But thank u, Thank you very much Robbie ol' chap
ReplyDeletelets utilize Lamberts pace
ReplyDeletehmmm
ReplyDeleteWow. The price we pay for sitting back like idiots.
ReplyDeleteOh my god...
ReplyDeletewhat a strike
ReplyDeleteYes yes yes. We could have finished them off earlier if we did not play with 2 holding midfielders.
ReplyDeleteWhen is Rodgers going to wake up.
Not much you could do there nice shot.
ReplyDeleteWe could have killed them off in the first half. They have been sh1t all along.
ReplyDeleteI'm just over it. Absolutely over it.
ReplyDeleteYep but f##k@ng lucky goal
ReplyDeleteDoesn't matter. Sitting back allowed it to happen.
ReplyDeleteI thought we looked solid but unspectacular today. But there are definite green shoots of recovery especially defensively.
ReplyDeleteLucky goal but that is what we get for defending too deep instead of killing them off. Oh well. Not too bad. Early on in the season.
ReplyDeleteFFS Roggers, ypou have tried Lucas and Gerrard as a holding pair and Gerrard and hendo as a holding pair before this match started and both times we have have been sh!t. Why oh why persist with 2 holding midfielders???
ReplyDeleteWTF??
acres of space on the edge of the box and thats what happens when you sit back
ReplyDeleteThat goal was far from lucky, undeserved maybe but not lucky. The strike of the season for me.
ReplyDeleteNo complaints. Still a very rusty looking side, playing OK for short periods. That's a cracker to level it, you just have to accept those. Should have been a hard fought 3 points but if we were good enough we would have scored 1 or 2 more.
ReplyDeleteThat's 0 goals and multiple missed chances for Balotelli in 4 league games. I'm afraid it's nowhere near good enough and it's costing us points.
ReplyDeleteYou could see from the look on Jagielka's face that it was a luck goal. That is a one in a million goal. Tell me honestly that when the ball went in you thought it was hit by Jagielka.
ReplyDeleteThey had 90 minutes to finish em off you are going to concede the occasional goal like that no reason they couldnt have had 2 or 3.
ReplyDeleteFFS 2 holding midfielders have cost us how many points this season?
ReplyDeleteI would prefer conceding 50 goals a season and challenging for the title then seeing us having to scrape for on point.
no one has covered themselves in glory today we looked and played like a mid table team
ReplyDeleteWhat exactly are you complaining about? How did the "formation" cause us problems? We had plenty of possession, plenty in the forward third. The setup can only do so much, then it's about individual quality. What went wrong had feck all to do with whatever tactics you think were being played, it was a lack of precision around and in the box.
ReplyDeleteI'm not saying its his trademark but when he played central midfield at Sheffield United Neil warnock used to call him 'Our Gerrard'. He's got in the locker.. trust me
ReplyDeleteI think our defense played really well today and Moreno had Lukaku in his pocket. To be fair, that was a great clearing header by Lovren before the goal but if you sit back and are not good at it, you are going to pay. I still think that with Sturridge we will be much better. Lallana was brilliant too.
ReplyDeleteWe played like a top four team but in the final third we were like relegation candidates. It will take some work and that is why this season is all about consolidation.
ReplyDeleteIf we get the points we go home happy today. That is the most compact we have looked all season. The back line looked calm and assured. It'll come..........
ReplyDeleteagreed adam the formation is irrelevant if you can not string 3 passes together, which in all honesty we struggled to do.There seems to be no communication players running into each other etc....lots to do
ReplyDeleteWe had 39% possession vs Spurs and absolutely f***** them up. We once again waited for the opposition to score today again.
ReplyDeleteEverton were sh!t.
Sturridge will help a lot and now we know how important he is to our mood in general.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely. Borini gone in January BTW
ReplyDeleteI just don't understand why we sit back after scoring. We were on the front foot all game. I knew Everton would score and the fact it was such a quality strike makes it less painful, but for fu**s sake we should of won that game by a couple of goals at least. Overall though a much better team performance with the high energy pressing back. See what a little criticism does for Stevie? But it was jut the Toffees
ReplyDeleteHe wont leave the greedy bugger.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely an improved defensive effort, although I'm still worried about that space in midfield in front of the defenders. I think Rodgers partially addressed it today but we still have a problem when 2nd chance balls spill away from our attackers and we have to turn and defend.
ReplyDeletewas he ever here
ReplyDelete...... You dont understand? It's mainly because we have been crap this season. Confidence has to start somewhere ey? and today we looked like we had a solid foundation. All good teams are based on them.
ReplyDeleteIt seemed like the right idea. I don't think the goal can be blamed on sitting back, that's just one you have to take on the chin (pardon the tired cliché). We defended well and were headed for a point - that's a goal of the season candidate. Every team needs to be be able to hold a 1-0 lead sometimes and we almost did it. I don't blame the tactic.
ReplyDelete$h!# $h!# $h!# why always us
ReplyDeleteWe are a shadow of the team we were last season.
ReplyDeleteHAIL THE 4-2-3-1 FORMATION!!!
24 shots - that means we had possession in the right area. That's all the formation does for you - sets you up in the right area. After that it's just about individuals making the right decisions.
ReplyDeleteWe scored one goal. Do not make excuses.
ReplyDeleteAt least Liverpool were quick off the blocks albeit with no end product ,i'm beginning to realise Balotelli not the kind of player for us , work rate and all but that's just my opinion .
ReplyDeleteReally enjoyed watching Lallana today. He was running hard right through the whole 90 minutes and showed plenty of good quality, intelligent movement, good passing, can play all over the pitch. I think he's going to be a very important player for us as he continues to improve. He was as guilty as anyone when it came to poor decision making but I can see why he was brought to the club.
ReplyDeletePlay 2 upfront and it may be a different outcome. Is Rodgers blind?
ReplyDeleteHe wants to play for Liverpool. I dont blame him. If Raheem decides he wants to go though we slaughter him because WE want him to stay and then we question his loyalty. When the CLUB and fans want a player out and he wants to stay we call them greedy. One mans terrorist is another mans freedom figher ay?
ReplyDeleteNo Blind is currently playing at united.
ReplyDeleteGood one. That confirms that Rodgers is blind.
ReplyDeleteI think it can. When you sit back, it just creates opportunities like that. Everton were completely flat while we pushed forward, but were invited to attack as soon as we sat back.
ReplyDelete
