'El Loco Lindo' to LFC? - BR wants 'world class' £30m star despised by Hansen & Lawro

Speculation linking AC Milan star Mario Balotelli with Liverpool has intensified over the last month, and with Luis Suarez almost certain to leave Anfield this summer, the Reds will need a replacement, and reports today suggest that the controversial Italian striker is on Brendan Rodgers' transfer wishlist.

In May, the Daily Mail alleged:

"Liverpool will move in for Balotelli if Luis Suarez is lured away to Real Madrid or Barcelona after the World Cup".

After his nakedly self-serving bite 'apology' this week, a move to Barcelona looks nailed-on for Suarez, and a report today in Italian newspaper TuttoSport claims that:

* Tottenham and Liverpool both want Balotelli.
* Arsenal's interest has waned over the last few weeks.

This has to be one of the most wildly improbable transfer rumours in a long time. The Balotelli sideshow at Anfield? Talk about out of the frying pan and into the fire.

£30m-rated Balotelli is a very good player, and he's endlessly entertaining, but I can't see Liverpool spending big-bucks on a player who is practically guaranteed to cause problems.

Realistically, though, any problems caused by Balotelli are likely to be chicken-feed compared to Suarez's indiscretions, and if Brendan Rodgers can get the Uruguayan playing like the world's best player, then perhaps he can work similar magic on the Italian?

Balotelli - nicknamed 'El Loco Lindo' (The Brilliant Mad Lad) by his former Man City team-mates - has a patchy reputation, but recently deposed AC Milan Boss Clarence Seedorf refutes the repeated accusation that the striker is a bad apple. In a recent interview, he noted:

“I still have to understand where this ‘bad’ is in Balotelli. Mario is a sweet kid and very likeable...with a professional and determined attitude"

Balotelli - hailed by Gary Cahill this month as a 'world class' player - recently admitted that he 'misses' the Premier League, and with the persistent racism he experiences from the neanderthals of Serie A, a return to England could be on the cards. Balotelli's Agent seems to agree, and when asked about the striker's future this week, he told reporters:

"Maybe it was a mistake to bring Mario back to Italy. For him it is essential to go where he is loved, and at AC Milan some people love him and some do not."

With 36 goals/assists in 54 appearances for Milan, Balotelli is certainly doing the business in Italy, but, domestically, he is yet to achieve Suarez's level of prolificity, though that may come with increased maturity/experienced. Irrespective of his talent and potential, Balotelli is basically despised by a whole host of LFC legends:

* In 2011, Graeme Souness dismissed Balotelli as a 'liability'.

* Last season, Alan Hansen maligned Balotelli as a 'damaging distraction', and warned that 'you don’t need characters like him who seek out confrontation with referees and opponents'

* In 2012, Dietmar Hamann insisted that he 'wouldn't want Balotelli in my team'.

* Soon after, Mark Lawrenson labelled the Italian an 'absolute disgrace' and 'not worth the aggravation'.

* In 2013, Tommy Smith called Balotelli a 'nutcase' who would 'not have lasted five minutes' under Bill Shankly.

The stunning hypocrisy here never ceases to amuse me. Souness et al were constantly on Balotelli's back, but rarely offered the same critique of Luis Suarez, who caused much more serious problems for Liverpool. But I digress...

I personally have no problem with LFC signing Balotelli - I'm genetically predisposed to support any striker who scores a goal that contributes to England being knocked out of the World Cup, so bring it on ;-D

  2. Balotelli wouldn't be banned for a quarter of the games which would be a bonus. Maybe Brendan and Dr Peters can help him in his personal life which were mainly the cause of his acting up at City

    ReplyDelete
  3. maybe that would be a refreshing change from dr.jekyll and mr.hyde!?

  4. would be a wild card signing depending how much, what i dont like is static lazy players who dont chase back etc.
different type of trouble to suarez, besides the liverpool fans get the best out of star strikers on the pitch, suarez is a one off, hes a crazy pikey basically who goes from zero to hero each season, hes just embarressd liverpool no end. bottom line is hes a let down. id say take a punt on balotelli hes at a good age and still maturing

  5. if Balotelli came to us....I wouldn't care less if he wanted to give his money away to people on the street or let fire works in his bathroom etc I don't think any of his antics have affected any of the clubs he's been with (to my knowledge)......the problem I would have is he hasn't "gown up" on the pitch yet, he's like a spoilt brat most of the time, and sometimes he looks like he doesn't want to be there, during the world cup when he was substituted he looked like a kid on the naughty step.....sometimes he's a great player though

  6. People need to give Balotelli a break, knowing something of the sort of up bringing he's had, I'm only suprised he managed to become such a great striker, one who commands £25m+ in fees and plays lone striker for Italy...He may have moments of minor madness, but all things considered, he could have been in prison by now if it wasn't for the strength of character he must possess to become one of the most talked about strikers in the world and more for the great ability than the silly acts of childish attention seeking...
Don't get me wrong, I don't think he would fit in at LFC, but I'm not about to crucify him without any real justification... Suarez on the otherhand, he just throws it back in your face and needs to move on.. for LFC and my sanity..

  8. Good god no. If Sanchez is a no go then I think Jackson Martinez or Mandzukic would be next on my list

James Rodriguez paly his Clause simple
The hell with this BS swap deal plus cash.

  10. It's difficult with Sturridge's fitness to know what we need, I think. If Sturridge could stay fit then we could just buy a quality attacking midfield player but with Sturridge seemingly likely to miss at least 10 games a year, you need someone who could play as the striker because whilst I like Borini and Lambert, I'd fancy neither one of them for extended periods.

I think we get away with 2 up front with Suarez because he is such an extraordinary player and unusually hard working. I don't think we could play Martinez or Mandzukic alongside Sturridge with only 4 in midfield and if we rotate between such big strikers I don't think it'd be the best use of money or personnel.

I think our best bet would be to get an outstanding attacking midfield player who will score 15+ a year like Sanchez. Beyond him it is difficult to think of a realistic target who is as sure to score that many goals in the Prem.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Providing he doesn't whirlwind his knob at opposing fans I think he'd be an improvement behaviourally

    ReplyDelete
  12. If Rodgers is confident he can tame Balotelli, then I would welcome this signing. Balotelli has everything required in a striker. As a team mate I hear he's an arse. Sturridge was considered arrogant, but he's not that bad is he. Who knows Anfield might just be his home.

    ReplyDelete
  13. The reason I named the 2 strikers was because the article was suggesting we were after balotelli so I was just making the point that if we're looking at that type of striker I would rather go for the aforementioned than mental mario.
You could well be right regarding the attacking midfielder. We will need another striker tho IMO

  14. NO!! Never! He fell out with Mourinho at Inter. He was sold for 21.8M Euro to City. he fell out with Mancini and was sold to ACM for less than City paid for him. He fell out with Inzaghi and has been nothing but trouble at ACM who limped into 8th...45 points behind Juve. Why on God's green earth would any team want this human hand grenade? Anybody care to ask Sturridge whether he wants to be the sideshow yet again while another bad boy steals the spotlight for his antics? Please let this not be true. Please tell me LFC have more sense than this?

    ReplyDelete
  15. He rarely put's in the effort I'll pass

    ReplyDelete
  16. PEOPLE have been saying that for about 5 years now. How many teams have already given him break after break and given up? Why do we need to be the next team to repeat this insanity? Why would BR want a glorified fence post striker when he has been building a movement offense since he arrived? Let some other team give him a break. I want LFC to give him a pass.

    ReplyDelete
  17. If LFC are now inclined to sell Suarez...as good as he is...because of his antics and suspensions, then it makes no sense to take a less capable striker with an equally bad reputation and missed games record. Remember Bawlotelli wasn't even the third best goal scoring option at City!

  20. Goodbye you Crazy Genius1:31 am, July 03, 2014

Since we are now doing a high intensity pressing game with counter attacking, I would look at the option of buying Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. We will lose the brilliance of Luis in the final third, but if Coutinho has good runners with pace, he could increase his assist rate. Aubameyang would be available fairly cheap, and if we can get Sanchez on top of that from Barca....not too shabby.

Sterling will also put the frighteners on defenders with his pace. We won't be able to replace the quality of Suarez (he's a top 3 world player). So we should really push the boat out for pacy players as pressing with high intensity, we could continue our progress in the fashion of Dortmund (give us a chance to continue to be a top 4 team). Would also like jet heeled full backs too.

If we can't buy Aubameyang, then I could settle for Loic Remy.

  23. And Bawlotelli is none of the things you say...so pass right?

    ReplyDelete
  24. As his Chelsea career looks to be short lived, I would LOVE us to look towards Romelu Lukaku! Proven (and impressive) record at Premier League football, a good temperament years of growth and development in him. We want goals, he wants a regular chance at CL.. surely worth a gander? Honestly wouldn't mind us spending a pretty penny on him too (considering the Suarez money we'll be getting), preferably accompanied by another top class attacker (Alexis Sanchez anybody?) ;-)

  25. bye you crazy bar stud1:47 am, July 03, 2014

He's got that Zlatan attitude with half the brilliance.. We should hold out and take the pis--s... they took Mascherno for peanuts. Sanchez and £50m+.

    ReplyDelete
  26. OK, I'm in with that deal.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Only those who didn't know Sturridge thought he was arrogant. EVERYBODY knows Bawlotelli and the havoc he wreaks wherever he alights.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Knowing Ian Ayre he'll sell Suarez for Shakira's wore underwear and used nipple tassles. Please bring home Sanchez and £50m

    ReplyDelete
  29. No...it wouldn't. We'd just have to suffer more articles about BR looking the other way about a player because he scores goals. Of course that might not come true since Bawlotelli is the most titanically over-rated player on the planet. He sure dominated the match against Uruguay. Italy might have lost to Uruguay without Bawlotelli's scintillating performance...oh wait.

    ReplyDelete
  30. id love balotelli at liverpool, if anyone can get the best out of him its br, lets be honest suarez was pants before br built a team around him, now he is classed as one of the best players in the world, i think this could be a good signing if its true as sanchez doesnt want to come

    ReplyDelete
  31. Can't get past Belgium passing on Lukaku for Origi. What does Wilmots perceive about Lukaku that leads him to start a 19 year old over an established striker? What does Mourinho perceive, after the season Lukaku had, that he doesn't want Lukaku leading the charge for Chelski next season? There's something there about Lukaku that I can't put my finger on...but it isn't a good feeling.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Why wouldn't he? The signing would just produce endless fodder about BR's lack of intelligent signing ability and comparisons of one bad boy with another. I'd settle for talking about the matches and leave the antics discussions for whatever team is stupid enough to sign this over-pampered jerk

  36. agree, lukaku and sanchez will help with the hurt of losing one of the best players in the world.but with his antics i feel its time for him to move on.i really want us to bring in some players into the defence though, would like lovren and maybe rojo,i would also like us to bring in william carvallho from sporting lisbon. With these signings i think we are challenging again next season on all fronts.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I don't see Barca or RM or Bayern or PSG or ManU or Ateletico tripping over themselves to claim him. What do they know that LFC don't?

  38. If Suarez leaves, who do we replace him with? There is no one out there..even for big money

    ReplyDelete
  39. U know who is getting dissed in this whole Saga? Sturridge..... he was second top scorer for goodness sakes. Plus lambert is no slouch. We need another top striker but no more problem children. I've had enough. We need to get Benzema or someone like that. We will have a very busy and tough season. We need all hands pulling together.

  41. I'd have balotelli at Liverpool just for the banter. He'd sell a lot of shirts too

    ReplyDelete
  42. Can't see this one.Lambert and Sturridge are target men effectively. We don't need another. In other news, Marc Coucke was on Belgian tv last night, he is the main sponsor of Lille OSC, saying that it is 99% certain that Origi will be at Lille next year. However, they have also received a lot of bids from big clubs so he admitted he may not still be owned by Lille when he does.

    ReplyDelete
  43. When at Man City it was hard to believe he was 20. Footballing wise he had the skill and vision of a seasoned pro, yet sometimes his antics were like that of a toddler! All in all i'm a HUGE Balotelli fan. Incredible talent and still only 23. Get him in! Sturridge and balotelli with sterling is frightening for any defence. He has calmness on the ball and exquisite skill and technique. Not to mention pace and power. If rogers can tame the beast in this talents head then no doubt we would have a world beating strike force without Suarez

  47. It seems last year's challenge was built around Suarez and team spirit. I am not sure Balotelli is as good as Suarez or will be and I hate to think what he would do for team spirit. Plus he cheats and does loads of nasty niggly fouls off the ball

    ReplyDelete
  48. Wow. Nasty things off the ball? Like biting an opponent 3 different times? Come on now. I agree he's not as good as Suarez but not many players can or will be. He has potential in abundance and backs it up with goals. Il take him being as good as sturridge. Let's not start pretending suarez is an angel though. Love the guy but he could just as easily be labelled "loco"

  53. Yokohama Liverpool Fan8:55 am, July 03, 2014

While I agree we need 50M + a genuinely good Barca player Sanchez apparently prefers to go to Italy (Juventus), London (Arsenal) over Liverpool. We should be bringing in players who want to join Brendan's revolution. So we should say 80M or no deal because he is worth at least as much as Bale after what he achieved last season.

I noticed you don't have Ben Arfa Of New Castle in your list anymore???

    And how about defensive reinforcements??

I personally would prefer Liverpool to go for:

Back up keeper: Keylar Navas or Ochoa

Central defender reinforcements: Lovren (so we have 4 good CB pairings)

LB: Ricardo Rodgriguez or Marcos Rojo (please not Bertrand) with Enrique as back up (with Cissokho leaving)

RB: Keep as it is for now (now that is looks like Johnson is having a contract extension)

Attacking Mid: Firminho or Valbuena (genuine quality to give Coutinho a challenge)

Winger/Fwds: 1 of Shaqiri, Griezmann, Ayew, Konoplyanka or Lacazette (to replace Moses and give Sterling, Lallana a rest now and then). If Sanchez does not come we will need 2.

Striker: Origi in addition to Sanchez after selling Suarez and Aspas.

It would be a dream if we can get a player like James Rodriguez if/when Suarez leaves because he is only 22 and incredibly talented but realistically only Real Madrid has a real chance of luring him because that is where his dream move is. If he wants to give the Premier League a go for a few years it would be great to have him at the APEX of the diamond ahead of Gerrard/Can, Henderson/Allen and behind the 3 fwds.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Yes I agree Suarez is worse but I was not making a comparison . I don't want either of them

    ReplyDelete
  55. The problem I have with Balotelli is that his problems seemed to cause issues in the Man City dressing room, and upset the squad harmony.
Whilst Suarez has his problems, he would always give 100% for the team, and all the players seemed to get on well with him, something I couldn't see happening with Balotelli.
I say take a punt on Falcao. Unlikely I know but offer a good fee and you never know.

    ReplyDelete
  56. OT, but I don't think we can rule out Sanchez. We don't know how concrete those stories are about him preferring Arsenal, while SkySports and BBC haven't even mentioned such thing, in fact, BBC instead said that Juventus were also interested, not Arsenal.

Now, SkyBet does have slightly better odds for Sanchez to Arsenal than Liverpool, but that could be based on a number of things, like maybe because Arsenal have so far offered a better deal.

    ReplyDelete
  57. If Suarez stays and it's a big 'IF' ... What makes anyone think he will be anything like the player he was for us like last season ? When he does get back on the pitch after a long time out we could well be out of CL for starters . He will then have to contend with proving himself ( yet again ) to both club and supporters that he wants to be there when he clearly has shown that he doesn't by choice ..... Will he be able to handle all the increased flack and abuse that is going to come his way from rival supporters without a reaction down the line ? They now deffo know what he is ! The English media that he so loves will be on his back 24/7 . He will be a marked man by refs , who will no longer give him the benefit of the doubt and tolerate his diving and theatrics. Players will be out to ' do him ' and see him out of PL for good ! Can we honestly believe he will turn things around and give us the same 100 % again ? It would all be one hell of a distraction for the club and one that we could do without if we are to repeat our success of last season .....

    ReplyDelete
  58. Your guess sounds good. Is Jack highly rated any more? He looked every inch the championship defender on loan last season. Brad is getting closer to his last chance and has to improve further this season. His touch and concentration still need work. I really like him and think he has a chance, but still.

It's in the nature of healthy, competitive academy or reserves football that players come and go more frequently than we've been used to at LFC in recent times, with our unhealthy and uncompetitive, and utterly unproductive academy and reserves system.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Football needs mad characters like Mario. I'd love him to come to Anfield, and there's no doubting his talent. Bring it on Brendan, let's have a laugh while winning the prem.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Well he came on, scored and got an assist in that game and is only about a year older than Origi (who I'd also rather like), so it isn't as if Wilmots has completely discarded him hahaha! I think he was dropped purely because he didn't look anything like a confident player in those first two games.

He has the respect of Martinez who is very much in the same mould as Brendan in terms of a manager.

Mourinho didn't like Mata or De Bruyne either, and I would consider them both excellent players as well! I'm also confident that Lukaku was the one that asked to go out on loan this season (correct me if I'm wrong!). And Mourinho's processes have looked peculiar at times over the last two years, to say the least.. He only ever appears interested in buying titles with big Russian oligarch money.... *Costa *Fabregas* *Luis*.

i personally think balo will work for us.
    Reason :
Balo need attention all the time and liverpool is very pamper the star !
Balo done lot of st***d thing from pass but none of them will worst than we encountered, so is a small matter hahahaha !!!!
Balo is misfit everywhere now, so LFC might be his last chance to redeem himself...

1 more stupid reason is our squad too less (fired anger player e.g. roy keane style) hahahaa so get balo might good for squad waahahaa...we were too soft and alway get bullied hehehee

    ReplyDelete
  64. The difference between Suarez and Super Mario is Suarez is always hard working on the pitch and in training. He doesn't have the kind of on field bust ups with colleagues (own team) or off field distractions. Suarez is mad and may do something ridiculous once in dozens of games Balotelli is an almost constant distraction without anywhere near the work ethic of Suarez.

Also the whole thing is a non starter. He and his reps are trying to get teams interested and he has been just as linked with Arsenal, Chelsea and United.

    ReplyDelete
  65. He is just not in any way consistent. At least you got that from Suarez ban or not he would be involved in more games than Mario with non ban.

    ReplyDelete
  66. How many yellows gets a ban? Does it go away if you get a Red? Is Mario getting sent off in the middle of an important game better?

    ReplyDelete
  67. But he would turn up to training in a space suite. He would arrive on
his own to a game 24 hours late. He would insist on turning the chaining
room in to a hot box and carry a surf board everywhere he goes.

    ReplyDelete
  68. I'd love Balotelli at Liverpool. He's easily as good as Sturridge, and with DS's fitness issues, another top striker is needed if Suarez goes. Balo has a bit of an undeserved bad rep. Sure, he's done idiotic things, but he seems to have a good heart, if a short temper (see his tears during a Milan-Napoli game reportedly after suffering racist abuse AGAIN for another way he reacts to upsetting things). I'm sure BR could help him keep his cool when under pressure, either from being fouled the whole game or just frustration at playing poorly. He has so much potential and it would be a shame if he doesn't go on to hit great heights. Also, he scores super goals. Bring it on!

    ReplyDelete
  69. sell suarez cash+ sanchez use the remaining money to get di maria then go for moreno/rodriguez lovern origi

    ReplyDelete
  70. I seem to be in the minority when it comes to Ballotelli. Put all his antics to one side and look at him from simply a footballing stance and I don't get what the fuss is about, a good player, but nothing exceptional about him IMO. Then when you add his temprement, it's a definite no for me.
We need someone special to replace Suarez and he isn't it.

    ReplyDelete
  71. I do not think anyone can replace Suarez as such but bringing in Balotelli comes with all his trouble making. No thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  72. For me it's a work ethic think. Yes on his day he can be brilliant or have flashes or briliance in a decent amount of game but would he work hard enough? Would he want to be the main man? Would he want to be the cebntral player when we have Sturridge? We played Suarez there as he will move around so much more but Mario would not. He would want to take up lots of central positins and he doesn't have Sturridge's pace. He would cost a whole hunk of change and despite not biting anyone would likely get lots of yellows and possibly some red cards along the way. Also he can't even get a bib on on his own.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Pretty central strikers and are tall I suppose. Origi seems to have the most pace out of the three though even if he has played a few positions in his short career.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Is there a link to a list of words that get held up?

    ReplyDelete
  75. I like your post but wouldn't want Benzema personally. I would like us to not have a problem player anymore. In some ways it was worth it with Suarez but it just wouldn't be with Mario. I want us to be hailed for or football not hated and ridiculed for our players.

  77. I don't think Ballotelli is a the right fit for LFC and Brendan has had enough headaches with Luis to last him a life time . I don't think it is necessary to get one of the best strikers in the world to replace Suarez but someone who fits the role playing alongside Sturridge and Stirling to keep the
    *SAS* factor going .

  80. Fair do's. I wrote a post three or four times the other day before I realised that one word was keeping it from staying up. Pain in the bottom but I get the need.

  81. What if we took a punt on a quality young player like Luis Muriel or Muniain as in my opinion Sturridge is more than capable up front and we got Lambert too now. We have good players to play wing forward - sterling, coutinho Lallana, maybe Shaqiri and Sanchez too- we should buy some good defenders like Rodriguez the Swiss left back and de vrij /indi who play for holland. For example.... Would love a really top midfielder like Vidal or the potential of pogba in the midfield too.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Strike Muniain off your list. He just signed a new deal with A. Bilbao through 2017.

  83. Yeah, I'm sorry about that. My posts get held too. It's a necessary evil, though. Without it, literally 500+ troll posts per day (sometimes more) would flood the comment section, and that's before the inevitable spam posts.

  84. It would be backwards step, Shaqiri(22) is good class quality player. Pedro(26) and Sanchez(25) are world class players. B Rodgers should get Pedro(26) and 55M as Sanchez(25) wants to join Arsenal.

B Arfa(27) is a class quality player and better player than Shaqiri(22) for sure. And i would have him in my side, but if we are going to lose L Suarez(27) we need to replace his class and quality.

When we sold Alonso and Torres, we brought clown players like Jovanovic and players like Poulsen to replace them. And then it took us 3 years and a half to replace the class and quality of F Torres ( L Suarez) and then we lost Mascherano.

5 years and half on we have still not ever replaced the class, control, dominant, quality of Alonso and Mascherano in centre midfield.

  89. And we've already had one player who thought he was bigger than the club ......

  90. I don't think either of Smith or Robinson are as highly thought of as they once were, but my understanding is that they are more highly thought of than Stewart.

The only opinion that really matters in this regard Rodgers', so until we can see what he does with them (in terms of loan, squad number and most importantly, playing time) we can only guess as to what his intentions are.

  91. Read my post again.

and if I can judge from that one game-... Just saying I liked what I saw. I am not the one actually bringing players to Liverpool, I do not have to be right..

  92. Didnt see much of Johnson, did see Yedlin..

  93. Liverpool really need to sort this out 4 big signings and not a defensive player among them, yeah the rat has gone to barca and we need to replace his prowess up front but it was our lack lustre defending that ultimately lost us the prem ! WHY can't Rodgers sign someone who is among the best defenders in the world instead of a spurs reject ?

Owen. Can someone please post this comment on sofifa's feedback page, I will follow you if you do, and my original account called BANG! get's restored. Here is what the comment said:

    Dear sofifa,

I would like you to take time to read this please. My first account BANG! got banned for a reason i still do not understand. I did not insult anyone, i did not troll anyone i just said my own honest opinion and felt insulted from a comment made by an account called BANG!'s mum. I felt his account was made just to insult me. I realised i was wrong, and i felt you banned my first account because i mistakenly asked for his account to be banned. I feel that might be one of the reasons my first account was banned. Sofifa, please may you un-ban my first account as I have had to go through lots of trouble to get here to get here, my parents are angry at me now, I'm just an honest 13-year old who just wants to comment about different players and what I think of them. All my comments have now been deleted which I think is a real shame considering none were offensive and they were just informative and my own opinion. I hope you understand what I've been through, being unjustly banned, so i beg of you please unban my first account BANG!, and un delete the comments that the account made if possible. I love this website and just want to share my opinion. Thank you.

    Yours Sincerely,

    James Rodriguez

P.S. Can you please unban my iPad's commenting address as i can't comment from there at the moment. Thank you.
