Dream Deal: BR wants €40m star who'd 'like to play for LFC' & 'admires' Gerrard

Over the last five years, Liverpool have repeatedly tried to sign Atletico Madrid winger Arda Turan, who is a self-confessed admirer of the club. The latest attempt reportedly came during the January transfer window, and with the summer transfer window in full swing, the Reds are reportedly set to launch yet another bid to sign the Turkey international.

According to Turkish newspaper Sabah Spor today:

* After losing out on Alexis Sanchez, Liverpool have 'accelerated efforts' to sign Turan.

* Atletico are willing to sell Turan to finance the signing of Arsenal star Santi Cazorla.

Turan's transfer history with LFC:

* Apr 2009: Rafa Benitez made a €10m move for Turan, a self-confessed Liverpool fan, but the tricky winger ended up moving to Atletico Madrid.

* Dec 2009: Turan made it clear that he favours a move to Liverpool: told reporters: "I most want to play at Liverpool because of the culture of the club and the fans"

* Mar 2010: Turan reiterated his Anfield preference: "As I always mention, Liverpool attracts me because of their tradition. In Europe, I am a Liverpool supporter, so if I go to play in Europe, I would like to play for Liverpool".

* Oct 2012: Nuri Sahin posted a picture on his Twitter account of Turan in a Liverpool shirt.

* Oct 2012: Liverpool sent an 'observer' to watch Turan in Turkey's World Cup qualifier with Romania.

* Dec 2012: Turan's Agent, Ahmed Bulut, told Turkish television channel TRT: "Arda wants to play for another club, to live a different experience. We are working now to make it happen. Atletico know what our intention is. If all goes well, Arda will leave the Madrid club at the end of this season."

* Mar 2013: Reports in Spain claimed that the Reds were lining up a €20m summer bid for the Turkish star.

* Aug 2013: ESPN claimed both Liverpool and Arsenal were'interested' in signing Turan during the summer transfer window.

* Aug 2013: Turan's agent confirmed that English clubs were on the prowl. He told NTV Sport: "A transfer of Arda to the Premier League this summer is likely. England is where most of the interest in him lies and there have been discussions."

* Jan 2014: The Liverpool Echo reported: "Brendan Rodgers [is] pondering a move for Atletico Madrid winger Arda Turan. Liverpool [could] make a play for the former Galatasaray star before the end of the January"

* Apr 2014: When asked if he is Liverpool fan, Turan told Four-Four-Two magazine: "I've always played for teams in red [Galatasaray, Manisaspor, Turkey] and I've always admired Steven Gerrard. So yes, I have a soft spot for Liverpool, especially given their history and the atmosphere at Anfield".

In a recent press conference, Reporters quizzed Madrid Coach Diego Simeone on Turan's future, and the Argentinean boss gave the following emphatic reply:

"Arda isn’t going, definitely. He has a contract with the club, he’s ours, he’s an extremely important player for the squad and he demonstrates it when he has to".

If Turan really loves Liverpool as much as he claims, then in theory, securing a deal should be relatively straightforward. At the age of 27, the Turk - who has a €40m buyout clause - is in his prime, and after winning La Liga with Madrid, he may feel that he's achieved everything he can at the club.

Realistically, the chances of Atletico retaining the league again next season are incredibly slim, especially with Barcelona's acquisition of Luis Suarez. Additionally, with Diego Costa already gone, Turan may feel that the time is right for him to move on too.

Turan's recent injury history is a concern, though. In the last 18 months, he's suffered three separate incidents, and the last thing Liverpool need is more injury-prone players.

a viable alternative to Sanchez?

  1. Well never saw enough of him, and it seems he is not available. Di Maria is, and with Italians rulled out because of money, Germans too(bAYERN COULD AFFORD HIM, BUT WON'T), it leaves Chelsea that I don9t think need them, Arsenal who brought Sanches, Mancity that don't need him(and I think can't spend that kind of money), manu and us. So i think he is a realistic option.

i cant see the what the fuss is about with this guy. His conditioning looks wrong, he looks slow and would after being signed to play on the wing (like Coutinho) have to be played in the middle because his lack of pace would deem him ineffective on the outside. Then we'd have a overflow of no.10's in the Liverpool no.10 graveyard when we don't even play with a no.10 anymore. Its a no from me......

  3. I agree. Brendan should show faith in his young academy players and bring them into the first team. Jordan Ibe, Suso, Joao Teixeira, all three are very talented.

  4. If FSG want to continue to have Liverpool sell as a product across the globe, they'll need to buy someone to get A**'s of chairs. I'm sorry but Flanni Alves or Welsh Xavi aren't going to sell merchandise. If our signings pan out like Spurs and we fail to land top 4, we are really in the sh@t. Atleast if we have someone the fans can hang their hat on and sell shirts and stuff, we'll have money in the coffers for next season. Bring in Reus or dare I say it Benzema (not to sure with him, he good..but?) .

  5. Wisdom progressing really well, apparently off to West Brom on loan.
Think it is this window when we should spend big, and in coming years we will be able obey fair play rules with loads of players on our pay roll worth more than 10 mill..

  6. Really not convinced and to say he will be in with a shout at the ballon d'or is complete fabrication on your part... No way does he. Like I say good player but definitely not what we need right now and I think he's better suited to the Spanish game. United are welcome to him as far as I'm concerned. Reus on the other hand would get me seriously excited, always loved him since he was at Gladbach and doesn't come with the prima donna nonsense of Di Maria. He seems pretty loyal to Dortmund though but if we were to offer 35-40 million you just never know.

I was really hoping on Sanchez too. Don't know of any other real quality option that can cover the same positions. Although I think if we can get Lukaku it will be a real coup for us as we are crying out for a bit of muscle, and he not only gives that but he has pace and seems to be improving year on year. I also like Aleksander Mitrovick but he can only be a back up.

  8. A player who played a big part in two most important trophies(we'll see tonight for the other one) is supposed to be in contention for ballon d'or.
You'll love him in red, trust me..

  9. Trouble is Di Maria can't play as a striker and ideally we need a player with the flexibility to play any of the front 3 positions hence why we so vitally needed to get Sanchez in. I just can't see any top quality players who we can go after we are just left looking at players who have the potential to be too quality but unfortunately that's not what we need right now.

  10. You won't convince me that easily. He's been benched by Argentina anyway plus hasn't done anything of any note in the World Cup. He's decent at times for Madrid and was probably their best player in the Champions league final but that doesn't warrant the exuberant praise you are giving him. Not for me.

  11. Sanchez was probably the only one fitting that profile and available. bUT I would go for Di Maria now and rely on DS and RL. Don't leave Rickie out of our high quality players group- think he will be vital for us next season..

  12. Got injured, not benched. Was the best Argentina player till he walked out. Scored the winner, one of Messi's goals was a tip in from his shot, tones of dribbles. basicly their game relied on Di Maria just a bit less than on the best footballer ever.

  13. Your obviously a big fan of his I just don't see and would rather we saved that kind of money rather than spend it for the sake of it.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Well it wouldn9t be for the sake of it imo. Plus as I said he is one of the few high profile players within our range.

  17. Absolute nonsense. Liverpool are massive not because of the pretty mercenaries who play for them, but because we represent something else than prettiness and the glamour of wealth: something about loyalty and community, about longevity, and about triumph in the face of tragedy and adversity. We're not Real Madrid and we shouldn't try to be.

  19. Read somewhere that Markovic wrote a thank you note to the fans. Sounds like he's moving.

Also read about Lukaku and Balotelli. Personally, in spite of his mercurial nature, I think Balotelli would do well here.

  20. How old is he? This is an old movie, right?

  21. I don't see what this guy will offer us that Sterling isn't already...40mill? Really? Honestly I swear liverpool. I read an article on skysports suggesting Sevilla want to take Aspas on an initial LOAN deal? Another baffling decision. Ian Ayre et al are simply hopeless.

  22. LFC are BANG OUT OF ORDER if they have been secretly tapping BONY and I assure you H Jenkins will DIG IN FOR WEEKS NOW - Our fault - not Swanseas. P E Southampton also pissed off with us

  23. Could this explain why SANCHEZ chose Arsenal - I suspect it might

  24. Loaning Aspas to Sevilla may actually not be such a bad idea. If he has a good season then his price will rocket.

  25. We are waiting...

  26. Agreed... nothing to lose... if he plays badly, it won't hurt his value much because it's so low currently.

  27. Well, we might get the occasional, "will he come out of retirement" line

  28. I think Turan is a good player but 40 million is way to much in my opinion. I don't see how his stats justify spending that amount. Last season he scored 7 goals and got 5 assists. I think that's a little underwhelming for the price.

  29. I have confidence in this guys as I stated before he seems to have a bit of pace with vision and technique. Jaimie wrote him off straight away as a continuation of Rogers poor signings but I have faith. YNWA

  30. Suarez is irreplaceable and out of this world.. but do I seriously have to remind everyone that we still have Sturridge though? If Suarez wasn't around, Sturridge would've been the top goal scorer and Madrid would've wanted him. All these transfer aren't being made to replace Suarez.. they're being made to help the team COMPETE in ALL competitions. We do need another decent striker though, and a solid defense.

  31. B Rodgers should invest the 75M money for L Suarez(27) sale and 20M extra on these attacking players, Not A Turan(27) for 40M

    Five Signings:

2 World Class signings: for 42-64M

    1: CM: T Alacantra(23) Of B Munich for 22-34M to compete with J Allen(24) Dictate Midfield

    2: RW/ RWF: M Reus(23) Of B Dortmund for 20-30M to compete with R Sterling(19)

Three class quality signings: for 20-30M

    3: LW: B Arfa(27) Of Newcastle for 5-8M to compete with Markovic(20)

    4: CM: M Sissoko(24) Of Newcastle for 8-12M to compete with J Henderson(24)

    5: FD: L Remy(27) Of QPR for 7-10M to compete with D Sturridge(24) and R Lambert(32)
