'El Niño Maravilla' to LFC? BR sends scouts to assess €26m Barcelona star...

In mid-October, several prominent sources in Spain (including Marca) linked Liverpool with a January move for Barcelona star Alexis Sánchez. Barca boss Tito Villanova recently ruled out the possibility of a move in the near future, but reports in Spain today claim that the Chilean star is one of Liverpool's top January transfer priorities.

According to Spanish sports newspaper Mundo Deportivo:

"Brendan Rodgers has ordered his scouts to collect information about Alexis Sánchez, who is Liverpool's transfer priority"

In an interview with ESPN Spain two weeks ago, Villanova was asked whether Sánchez still figured in his plans, and whether the 23-year old could potentially move on in January. He responded:

“The boy is fine, and he still has a long contract with us. I hope that he continues to play here at the Nou Camp for a long time.”

Villanova has not emphatically ruled out a move here; his comments are pretty standard stuff, and it's not like he would publicly say anything else.

Liverpool were linked with Sánchez in the run up to the 2011 summer transfer window, and around that time, Udinese Chairman Franco Soldati made the following statement:

“Sánchez of interest to both English and Italian teams. A team has already offered a figure close to 30-35 million euros but I cannot say where it came from"

It was speculated that Liverpool had made the bid, and considering the club went on to spend over £50m during the catastrophic summer of 2011, it's definitely possible.

Barcelona signed Sánchez - nicknamed 'El Niño Maravilla' (The Wonder Boy) - for €26m 2011, and so far, he's grabbed 16 goals/8 assists in 56 appearances. From what I've seen of the Chilean, he would be a good fit out wide in Rodgers' preferred 433 formation.

It seems unlikely that Barca will sell Sanchez after spending so much money on him only 18 months ago. Perhaps a loan deal is the more likely possibility...?

  1. a player like this doesnt need to be scouted, hes unplayable, but the thing is we wont get him, from barca to us is more than just a step down.
As much as i would love it, i dont think this going to happen if im realistic

but sometimes you just have to follow your optimism so: GET HIM AND CAVANI AND WE LL WIN THE PL 5 TIMES IN A ROW :D !

  2. Sanchez is as big of a diver as Suarez

  3. I am surprised you are not against the idea of signing Sanchez, as he dives alot.

  4. So your point is ? Is your name santi

  5. I'd be careful with Sanchez.
Good player yes, but his form has taken an alarming dive which is why his position at Barca has come under pressure.

Its also probably why they're holding onto Tello, as they may look to offload Sanchez.
It would depend on the price I guess.

  6. Whether Barca let Sánchez go really depends on how much he is getting to play for them. He has played 16 games so far this season, of which 9 in the league. Barcelona have the CL to look forward to in the New Year, so it would be surprising if they did allow him to leave in January.

Although Sánchez is a wonderful player and every Liverpool fan would welcome him to Anfield, I think there are more important players out there for the January transfer window. Christian Eriksen would be at the top of my wish list - he has both the talent and the character to be a key player for a club of Liverpool's stature, adding creativity in attack and even enhancing our goal threat. A proven goalscorer with the attributes to play in Rodgers' scheme of things, whatever these are, is the other priority. It also seems like we need a warrior in midfield, someone like Wanayama or Diame, to allow Liverpool to boss play at the centre of the pitch.

  7. As if Sanchez would join us from Barca... Massive step down for him and no CL footy... This story makes no sense at all.

  8. Sanchez would have more freedom at liver pool than at Barcelona

  9. won't happen....shame though.

  10. Would prefer Tello to Sanchez way less of a risk at the price and Tello has a big future.
The strikers role is one that still needs to be addressed so cannot see Sanchez even being considered.

  11. We Like to buy players for the future but the future is now. i'm living now and want to win now. that is why great teams buy great players cause they don't want to wait for something that might be but something that is and will !!! Wake up liverpool and smell the coffee before its too late

  13. Naa, they would have to give us at least £10 million as well, to make it worthwhile.

  14. Why wouldn’t Sanchez join us? Sahin moved from Real Madrid to us over Arsenal on loan. Why wouldn’t Sanchez. Don’t believe all the negative press, Liverpool is still a massive club and well respected in football. Also Brendan Rodgers has strong links with Barca, he schools there during the summer so will have many contacts. This move is much more possible then a lot of you think.

  15. Vialli well said my friend! People forget that Liverpool is the 3rd most successful club in history, in the world, and yes top class players are always honoured to be linked with such a historical and massive instituation. People think that top players join clubs like Man Shitty and Chelski for it's prestige, wake up guys it's all about the huge pay cheques, not pride or prestige. Those clubs have got no class, they're just shallow, empty cash cow clubs, until the bubble eventually bursts. Not to mention they'll never ever get the respect LFC has had over the years.

Anyone will tell you that in the 70s and 80s, the biggest clubs in Europe used to quake when we used to go out there - FACT!!! No English club, including Manure, have and never will have that respect in Europe to this day.

The sleeping giant will soon awake! YNWA!!!

  16. If the media is to be believed and it's a big 'IF' Sahin's proposed loan to Arsenal fell through as they insisted in a clause enabling them to buy him for £14m at any time during the loan. Whether it's true, or not, is not something us mere mortals will ever be privy to.
As for Sanchez, as good a player he is I think all we're needing right now is a clinical finisher (as I have been saying for the last 2 years). We're making plenty of chances, still, but not converting enough, still.
On another Sahin note, he was 'reportedly' quoted in the press at being played out of position, he prefers more of a holding role than the advanced role he has been played in. If this is true, then why wasn't he played there when Lucas was injured, instead of putting Allen there?

  17. Torres officially hands in transfer request back to Liverpool!!

  18. how do you mean,is he coming back to us oh Torres you are always welcomed

  19. Sanchez is an exciting / good player and I would love him here at Liverpool. But, as it has been mentioned, he does seem to be a little too soft when it comes to going down, then again most Barca players are.

I think he would do pretty well in the front 3.

However he is high wages and still has a long contract so I am not sure if it's viable to get him, but you never know.

    Good player though.

  20. but the biggest is Ashley Young

  21. Totally agree. While we do need a striker, I think we're forgetting that we also need DM cover/competition and IMO Wanyama would be a great fit as someone who wouldn't mind playing on the bench but good enough to step up and give lucas a rest. Lucas has come back and we look significantly better but if he gets injured again then we are in trouble. For Jan we need a ST, DM, and I'm a big fan of eriksen but I can't see that happening especially with Man U reportedly very interested in him as well

    ReplyDelete
  22. I think it's cause he is a really poor tackler. He is more of the Xabi mould where he likes to dictate play from the back but needs a fellow deep midfielder to tackle. If you look at Madrid, xabi always has kedera or diarra and at liverpool it was momo/gerrard besides him doing the dirty work. Nuri needs that even more but since we dont have that luxury as we only have one true DM in lucas. Why brendan played allen ahead of him when lucas was injured probably comes down to work ethic and how allen is more ready to track back than nuri/the fact that allen was his big money player brought in to compliment his system and he feels allen needs to play for the system to work

  23. Agree. Its interesting tho watching him at Udinese, he used to stay on his feet more and that's what built up this image that he was a different kind of winger that scored goals from situation where others would go down. Don’t know what happened but I'm not a fan of his play anymore cause he dives so much. Its hard enough watching Luis in the first half of the season blatantly diving and seeing every ref in the country now think he's crying wolf when an actual foul happens. Sanchez is a brilliant player, but Liverpools fundamentals are built on higher values and I personally think we can find someone with similar attributes that can stay on their feet

  24. How often have you seen Barcelona play

    ReplyDelete
  25. To be honest, i haven't managed to see Sahin play due to working overseas but I see your point. We had Masch sitting behind Xabi so he could be creative without having to win the ball for himself. I can't believe we didn't win the league with those 2 & Gerrard in midfield with Torres scoring like a mofo - wrong era for us as we'd smash any team in the league right now with that team!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Would you have Walcott?

If I'm brutally honest, the players we're being linked with since the summer haven't been filling me with excitement, in fact, none of them have since the arrival or Torres as he was the biggest name player to join us in a while.
Having said that, it's not about the player's reputation, just look at Arsene's signings - Anelka, Henry, RVP, Vieira, etc. they weren't exactly household names but they all turned out ok. I'm hoping we can do that with Shelvey, Yesil, Assiadi etc and turn Morgan, Suso, Coady etc into the successes we had with McManaman, Owen, Gerrard, Carragher and, of course, God himself - Robbie Fowler.

  27. I dont think anyone has been really impressed with who we've been linked withWould I have Walcott? Under the circumstances, yes. He's scoring goals, he's got the pace that matches Sterling on the other flank that would cause all sorts of mayham for defenders. Am I a huge fan or his? No, and I do wish that we can pull off a surprise coup this window but I'm keeping my feet on the ground. I will honestly say that I was very excited when we got Meireles and Aquaman and it was just sad the neither lived up to the potential i'd seen in portugal and italy repectively. The only think that worries me about BR is that while Arsene bought those players with a definitive role as to where he saw them (changing Henry from a winger to a striket for example) he seems to not know entirely what he's doing when it comes to transfers. I cant really explain it but I can see Arsene saying, "I want Henry, Viera, etc" while BR would say "This is my philosophy, give me a shortlist of players who fit the mould and let's see who we can bring in." Its a small difference but its the difference of not only knowing how a player can add to the teams ability, but also how they can add to the chemistry of the team on offense and defence. It's a difference that sees money spent on players bought to add to the starting line-up that now wouldnt make the first team (Borini-wouldnt get a game even if he was fit, Assaidi, and nuri)

But we'll see come Jan. Hopefully I'm wrong and BR suprises us all. But I just have this feeling that this window is either going to be fantastic or appaling

  29. Don't remind me. And of all the clubs to beat us when we had our best chance to end the wait for the trophy. Gutted at that and gutted at the fact that it will be a while till a liverpool team entertains like that again. Remember watching the pool play and the other team would score in the 70th min and as a LFC fan, you KNEW that we would find a way back. The famed "kings of suspense" playing at Anfield at a time when Fergie famously made his team wait in the tunnel till the KOP finished singing YNWA citing the fans were the reason his team started out slow and eventually lost a previous fixture to us....ahh....the good days. How they are sorely missed

  30. Didn't Rodgers say he can only get one or two loans in January? The ony hope is if Arsenal confirms their 10m pound interest in Downing. Come on, any interest in Sterling is just keep the attention off Downing's high profile transfer to Arsenal. Sterling knows this is the best place for him now. Anyway I heard Man United planning 25m pound transfer for Henderson financed by selling off half the squad.

  31. I remember the days, mate. We'd attack in waves and knew we had the kind of striker who'd convert the chances we were making. That's what we need right now and have been needing for the past few seasons; someone who can pick up the ball in the box and fire a shot in which will hit the target and, barring an excellent save or a heroic block by a defender, it's going in the back of the net.
I think Morgan can be like this if he's given the chance and the fact that he's only 18 means he has oodles of time on his side. Look at Falcao just now, he's 26 and it hitting his prime, so there's plenty of time for at least one of our young strikers to come good, given the correct environment.

  32. Haven't they all been fantastic or appalling?
I think the fans have the same idea as Arsene when it comes to players, i.e. get player X or Y. I think with Brendan's acquisitions of Allen & Borini they were to fit into his philosophy as he'd previously worked with them. Sahin has a reputation that proceeds him and Yesil, I reckon, was a recommendation from Hyypia but Assiadi is a bit of an enigma. He's young, but not youth or U21 young yet he hardly gets a game, even though he's fast and clever and, like Sterling, can play any role in the attacking 3 of a 433 formation.

    ReplyDelete
  33. My only worry is that the last striker to be given a good run of games from our academy was Owen. We have Morgan, Yesil, and Pacheco who are all promising players but the coaching staff need to put faith in them and play them in the FA cup instead of burning out suarez. There seems to be a willingness to give players in every other position a chance except for the striker role which needs to change. IMO, I still have high hopes for Pacheco although we repeatedly gets overlooked and would love to see him given a chance and prove himself because he knows how to find the back of the net and I'd love to see him show the KOP that

  34. I would say they've either been okay or poor. I think we're either going to sign a cavani/llorient and eriksen and be blown away or sign sturridge and some no-name player and be overall dissapointed. Assaidi is a head-scratcher. He has shown promise, but its clear that the more infrequent we see him the less confidence he seems to have on the pitch. I liked him when I first saw him, but whether it was a fall-out with the manager or something, BR just doesnt rate him. I mean, BR would rather put downing on the wing than this young, quick, tricky prospect he bought!?!? Very confusing
