Gillespie: LFC 'revelation' had an 'attitude problem' at the Academy. Surprise?

On Friday, Liverpool starlet Suso signed a new long-term deal at Anfield, and then celebrated the next day by putting in another excellent performance for the club against Reading. Liverpool legend Gary Gillespie is a huge fan of Suso, but he's revealed that during his time at the Academy, the Spanish youngster made mistakes that held back the speed of his progress into the first team set-up.

Speaking to LFC TV yesterday, Gillespie - who covers youth games for LFC TV, and has done for years - described the exciting 18-year as a 'revelation', but revealed one particularly surprising piece of info about Suso's development. He said:

"From what I can gather, he might’ve had a bit of an attitude problem at the Academy, possibly because he thought he was a too good for them,

"I think he's put those problems behind him though. He’s come up to the first team level an he looks comfortable. With a new contract under his belt, the future is bright".

Gillespie is pretty plugged-in at Anfield so he would know about what goes on at the Academy. He was, however, quick to add:

"Sometimes it's good to have a little bit of attitude and arrogance as you need that at this sort of level".

Suso certainly has a touch of arrogance and confidence on the field, and that's a great thing to see in such a young player, so long may it continue.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers recently revealed that Suso could've left in the summer. He told LFC TV:

"We had offers for him [Suso] to go abroad but he was keen to stay, he understood he was going to get a chance here.

"He is tactically very good, strong technically with the ball. He makes things happen. I love that type of player. Talent finds space. He is a real talent".

Of all the young players currently breaking through at Anfield, Suso, IMO, has the most exciting potential, and it's great that he's finally tied down to a long-term deal.

  1. sorry i am off the topic but...attacker gets fouled twice in a row(one would have been dangerous free kick) but the ref says play on. defender does not tell him that it was foul, and even shouts at player because he dove, and it was clearly a foul. that is not fair play, so why does defender expect attacker to play fairly for the rest of the game?

  2. I think what you are trying to say is, "Who is the bigger cheat: The player who goes down 'easily' even though he has been touched and is clearly off-balance? Or the defender who mis-times his tackle then leans over the attacker, mouth frothing, screaming "cheat", and brandishing an imaginary card for 'diving' to hide the fact that he has very little ability and couldn't tackle a light supper......."

Am I on the right lines?

  3. something like that, but for me it is very important who started it. if someone dives and wins a penalty, i think it is right to put an elbow in his nose when the ref is not looking. also if you get constantly fouled and no free kicks awarded, you are in title to go down easily... it is a thin line, but still i think we should be on suarez side...

  4. Dowd has been relegated to the Championship, and after watching him on BBC last night he should drop even lower. As to his replacement at Anfield yesterday he should go back to where he came from. I think it is time that officials from other European countries should officiate here. God knows what we'd do with ours, LOL.

  7. Christiano Ronaldo has an attitude problem, Keane had one, Gerrard picked up his fair share of red cards early in his career, Fowler had issues with people not enjoying his sense of humor and not too many people have warm feelings towards Maradona either....but boy could/can they play football...

  9. Hopefully he'll turn out some arrogant performances on the pitch, the kid's got a talent way beyond his years. Speaking of talent, I watched the highlights of the U21s beating City 3-1 and Adam Morgan's goals were in the Robbie Fowler mould. Ngoo had two chance to score, messed them both up and Morgan mopped up. He's the guy we need in the middle, get the ball to him and he will score. I've read a few articles about Sturridge & Walcott, Morgan & Sterling are just as good and, both being the ages they are, playing alongside Suarez, Gerrard et al, they will be better players for Liverpool than the other two will be for their respective clubs. AND, there's Yesil to come through with Jerome Thomas in a year or two. Striker crisis? Na, don't think so.

  10. What about Sinclair?. I watched the whole U21s game, and was not impressed with Morgan, even though he tapped in twice. I think Adorjan looks real classy.
We need a proven top level scorer in January, and that only leaves us with two, another injury and we would be back where we started.
Again are FSG willing to pay for an expensive player, or are we looking at bargain basement players. hopefully its the former, taking into account the £17mill we should receive from the Carroll deal. I live in hope, rather than expectation.

  11. More comparable to Suso - Fabregas had an arrogance about him; arrogance is good in this profession, it shows you don't fear anyone who you come up against.

  12. Only if the money is well spent, is FSGs policy. If there was $17M kicking around from a Carroll sale, then I think they would be willing to spend it but only on a young striker who can score goals and young enough to be moulded into Rodgers' system/English football (if they are not from England), rather than $6-$7M on a 29 year old striker from Fulham. Granted he's doing ok for Spurs, but we've been burned in the transfer on players who've had a short stint of brilliance (ie/ Diouf). Good example of a good spend is Higuain - Real Madrid bought him for 13M euros at the age of 19 after scoring loads of goals in Argentina, but didn't really become a regular until a couple years later and is now only 25 and can score goals like crazy. That's money well spent, and that's what FSG are looking for.

  13. I'm fully against the idea of getting an 'established' striker in January. Reason being what is 'established'? I doubt FSG will spend big in January. Get in another mediocre player and slot the man into the first team is meaningless. We should rightly play our youngsters in Yesil and Suso as forward/striker. These are exciting players!

With no funds available is not the end of the world. We need not follow Man Utd, Man City and Chelsea in splurging millions of pounds every season since we don't have the backings of these clubs. We should model ourselves to Arsenal. we should generate funds at the club and not always from the owner's pocket. Rather unfortunately, our last few managers are not shrewd in the transfer market. So most of the transfers are waste of funds, those were funds that can possibly be used for a new stadium.

We must accept the fact that FSG is not some Mansours. They tried hard enough last season, as rewards for their spendthrift season, let's ask KD and Comolli about it. As a result, they will not waste unnecessarily again and so for now, we have to work within our means, which means we should not expect any funds in January.

  14. well said but unfortunately, our patience is too short. Carroll comes to mind as he's still got plenty to learn but do we want to wait?

  15. Your description fits Jamie "Hoofer" Carragher to a tee.

  16. I am with you on this one. Siberia comes to mind

  17. Yes, KD and Comolli wasted so much, I wonder who were the Geniuses who appointed those spendthrifts, any ideas anyone.?

  18. Yes Higuian would be welcome, but beyond our means, and I reckon if he did want to move, we would be on page 7 on his wishlist of Clubs.
Yes we have been burnt by players in the transfer market, Borini springs to mind, about $16mill, or £11mill.
£6 or £7 mill on dempsey, would have been better than declaring on their official website he was a LFC player, then spending f**k-all.

  19. FSG didnt declare anything, it was an American News Feed that streams to the FSG website that mentioned the Dempsey signing.

  20. I think it fits most defenders, including ours.

Seamus Coleman "cheated" yesterday - caught the man then immediately pointed to the ball to con the ref..........

  21. I know its only 1 win, but whats happening at our club is brilliant. We've all been crying to see these youngsters play, and for years overrated players have come into the club instead.

Regardless of that, we should really follow the Arsenal mold. Its shown to work (even if they havent got many trophies in their cabinet).

Wenger has crafted so many world class players out of nothing and I hope that's what BR eventually does.

The futures bright, the futures RED!!! YNWA....

  22. If you don't mind me asking: If you class their way as a sucess, what makes Arsenal's way a success?

  23. sorry for upsetting you Jason but I was trying to make a point and he was the biggest prick i could think of.

  24. I never heard of any player who does not have an attitude problem once in a while especially when you're young and juvenile but you learn and become better .There are a lot of older players out there who have attitude problems .
