Dalglish update: LFC refuse to confirm that KD is still manager of Liverpool...

On Sunday evening, Kenny Dalglish and Steve Clarke flew to Boston for crunch talks with FSG over their future at the club. Predictably, after the last 24 hours of fevered speculation, the web is awash with rumours that Dalglish has resigned as Liverpool manager. What does the club have to say about this rumour?

About twenty minutes ago, I spoke with someone from the beleaguered LFC press office, which has been inundated with calls today from various journalists. The person I spoke with was clearly stressed, and when I asked about the Dalglish resignation rumour, I was curtly told that the club has no comment 'at this time'.

I then asked if they could confirm that Dalglish was still the manager of Liverpool FC, and noted that his name was still in the official site's 'Team' section as 'Manager'. Again, I was told that they couldn't comment 'at this time', and then the press officer hung up the phone. Testy!

Make of that what you will.

Sounds like something has happened. If Kenny has been removed from the managers job, good luck to him. You'll always be a legend Kenny.

what's also interesting is that clarke was spotted with the owners at a red sox game, but kenny was nowhere to be seen.

Maybe Clarke is being kept on? Bit traitorous of him to go the game if KD has left.

One man can't change that mess. The players will have to change too.  Asking Kenny to step down because he brought those players in is fair enough. But the next coach in is going to have to be given more time than Kenny has been given to overhaul the staff and get in the players that he needs. We're looking at another long season. But on an optimistic point, I reckon we'll improve on this year.

Rowanuk said...

We are not a top draw anymore(although i could see pep being interested in restoring a once great footballing giant one day-provided he could handle constant rain and terrible food, but not yet), therefore, there is only one man for the job and he is the fat spanish waiter, the master of making wine out of water and feeding a whole city with scraps. Give him a solid base from which to work, some funds and im sure he would have learnt from the past. no politiking and a slightly more adventurous formation at times where possible. bear in mind valencia were seen as a defensive side at their best, but they still looked awesome when they hammered us. id take 'the crushing machine#2'.

Hiddink, Guardiola or Klopp. Klopp would be a great choice as he has worked wonders with Dortmund and has a great eye for a bargain player, Hiddink is a master tactician and a great motivator and Guardiola knows how to get a team playing real football. Rafa would come back in a heart beat and in all reality would have still been the Liverpool manager if it wasn't for the Hicks & Gillett saga. Martinez is has a lot of potential and has his teams playing beautiful football but part of me questions if he is ready for the kind of pressure and expectations our great club. If Kenny does leave I wish him well, he will always be a legend and my footballing idol. YNWA!!!!!

The worst they've been if you look at the results/points rather than looking at the football played and the fact that it's a full rebuild.

Brendan Rodgers would be top on my wishlist. He's the right age, personality and have a spot on view on footy. Very impressed with how he could get, what is frankly a championship side, to be the team with the highest possession rate throughout the season. To think what he could do to our squad.

Most of all we need a dynasty builder and Rodgers could wel be that.

Abhishek Karmakar said...

And now the club has confirmed that Dalglish is still in a meeting with the owners...

Deebo said...

I hope he does the dignified thing and stands down. If he doesn't though then he needs to be pushed

OriginalChan said...

Klopp signed a contract in January.
Yes, yes, I understand contracts mean nothing and all that talk, etc, but still would cost considerable money for the club to get him released from contract as he is tied till 2016.

I would like Martinez. I hope the fans and FSG are of the mindset that basically illustrates acknowledgement that we aren't a force at the moment and that it will take time, instead of the fans and the likes of the perennial pre-season rent-a-quote Gerrard and FSG coming out yet again of lofty ambitions. Its good to aim high but sometimes we need to be conservative to ease the pressure and let the club grow with patience. Of course, I have been one that has criticised KK yet I talk of patience? Well I personally don't think KK is the man to take us in the direction I want to club to go in, a proper 'bring-the-club-back-down-to-earth and build the club' direction that I don't think he is right for. He and his fellow colleagues that were responsible for the direction of the transfer policy have taken the club backwards. High or low net spend, it is unforgivable what they brought in for that level of expenditure (this is not net spend) and its no surprise, so far, that expenditure hasn't even been a average success.

OriginalChan said...

Would the club, the owners and the fans give him the time to do so? That is the thing with this club, many don't realise we need to strip it/take it back down to earth before we can build.

Carroll9 said...

No not really. Steve Clarke is a good coach, so makes sense to keep good people at the club. He'll only be a traitor if he was plotting behind Kenny's back to take his job. If he hasn't done too much wrong, why should he put himself out of a job? Sounds harsh but is true. I have great colleagues at work, but if one of them had a bad performance and the boss got rid, I would stick up for he/she but not in the expense of my own job, especially if my colleague was on the borderline of being deserved to be fired. Now, if they accused he/she of stealing when i know they were innocent, then I would probably have nothing to do with my bosses and prob quit.

anteater71 said...

Poor signings have cost Houllier his job, same with Rafa so why should it be any different with Kenny? We are 8th after spending over 100m on new recruits. Can't see why it is knee-jerk to sack those who have brought in those non-performing players for that kind o money.

Carroll9 said...

If they sacked Kenny over the phone, then it would be a disgrace. No matter what he has done this season in terms of managing the team, he IS a legend and deserves the utmost respect. Hodgson, well...what had he ever done for Liverpool? by all means treat him with respect, but Kenny has more than earned great respect amongst the club. So yes if you were going to fax Kenny, you better do it correctly.

Anor Lfc said...

Pep maybe? or Mou...

Carroll9 said...

Please don't have a go at the owners, they saved us from oblivion. You would do well to remember that. god some Liverpool fans have short memories.

Joandmike said...

I'll reserve judgement on this rumour until there is an official announcement.

But those calling for a return of Rafa must have very short memories - Do you not recall Reading away needing a win & taking off Torres when chasing the title? Do you not remember his dreadful treatment of Xabi Alonso in pursuit of the inferior Gareth Barry? You must remember his implosion during the "facts" rant? Revolving door of transfers? Lack of tactical nous & use of subs when games were going against him?

I could go on. Dalglish IMO was the wrong choice - appointed on a wave of nostalgia & late season optimism. But let's be careful what we wish for & let's hope the owners know a thing or two about quality managers if rumour becomes reality. I thought KD may get til Christmas...

Roberto Martinez is acknowledged as one of the nicest guys around & has worked a minor miracle with Wigan but taking on the monster that is currently LFC is a whole new task, not saying he's not up to it but restoring a fallen giant is a bigger task than over achieving by keeping relegation favourites in the league.

My heart would like Guardiola or Mourinho for what this club needs to move forward but head says they wouldn't want it even if they were available to take it.

The other worrying aspect is how Skrtel & Kuyt have seemingly come out & questioned the clubs ambition and/or the manager, not good for KD.

Let's wait & see though. Maybe KD does actually have a plan & can convince the owners...

Abhishek Karmakar said...

Kuyt quotes were from the s*n.

Guest said...

Lol Sounds like Roy Hodgson just before he came to Liverpool. After all, he was famous for being a gentleman, actually even now as an England Manager. Why not take him back? He is respected and modest (before liverpool), media love him and he got excellent results with lower league clubs as he knows inside out the league...

comebackRafa said...

Oh it justs gets better, the King has gone,FSG have approached Xavi Valero to join the coaching staff he is Rafas goalkeeping coach,Kuyt is coming out in support of Rafa,Reina we all know what he thinks of rafa,Rafa will be on his way back its obvious,i feel elated i cannot contain myself.

seems like dalglish's days are over, hopefully, and the nightmare is over as well.

Get Bharatpatel said...

Really - Would you care to elaborate? I am not stating that you are incorrect, I would however be interested in why you believe this. Do you think it is reasonable for fans of LFC to have expected to finish above 8th place in the league this year when the club did not have other european commitments? Are the owners inept for trusting DC/ KD to spend huge sums of LFC funds on what has proven to be relatively average at best players? If Roy Hodgson was deemed a disaster in what was an extremely difficult period in terms of previous owners having no interest in the future of the club and therefore having little or no funds to improve a team that required a refresh after the previous season, then should this season not also be considered a disaster? Whatever happens to Kenny (stay or go) will not be a result of fans knee jerk reactions. Our owners are quite successful businessmen that are seem more then likely to be able to make decisions for themselves regardless of whether they are right or wrong!

Joandmike said...

I don't know the original source but it hints at an inner unrest at the direction the club is heading perhaps? And is not a good advert to potential summer transfer targets?

As other posters have said will Martinez be given the time if appointed to build the club? If that is what fans want then why not AVB? He wanted to do things his way at Chelski & he was maybe only guilty of trying to out the older players who had a relationship with the owner? He did very well at Porto so why not Liverpool? It's surely a blank canvass for someone like him to build from the ground up again? I wouldn't be averse to Martinez but as I said before - taking the plaudits for what he has done is different to the blaze of managing Liverpool & the constant pressure of achieving what us task masters of fans desire & the glare of the press waiting for failure.

Both he and Steve Clarke are in Boston to discuss future roles with the club....Clarke to stay on as coach and Kenny back to ambassadorial role.

HEK80 said...

I agree that was perplexing. But I believe with the support FSG will give Rafa can build a bigger squad. I don't think he wanted to rely on N'Gog. I also think he will bring the best out of many of our current players. He wroks a lot 1 on 1 with them and I think that is why Gerrard was at his best under Rafa. Think he will make Carroll consistently unplayable!

Zulu said...

The nightmare is not over, we've still got the same players. You don't think FSG are gonna give the new manager another 100million to spend do you? Next year it will be the same team plus one or two new faces. We need more than that.

Xavi Valero was coming back whatever happened with Kenny....Pepe said as much in an interview/article weeks ago. It was the single biggest reason for his dip in form....

Torres also made similar comments relating to Valero's advice before each game relating to the opposing goalkeeper....

Here's hoping that Valero brings Pepe's form back, along with our ability to hit the back of the net rather than the woodwork....

A sensible comment at last. Pepe's poor form has passed under the radar amidst all the bitterness and bile directed at the new players. I've read blatant lies on these pages in an attempt to back up unfair criticism. A few weeks ago a poster berrated Stewart Downing by claiming that he had given the ball away SEVEN times in the first 20 minutes of a recent home game. He forgot about SKY box but I did not and checked the veracity of his claim. He was wrong! His first seven passes all found a red shirt, albeit that some of them were hardly adventurous. Says everything about some of the so called supporters on here.

I am sure all will be revealed in good time. It is clear that the owners are not as happy with him as they once were. It has been a steep learning curve for Mr Daglish. If he keeps his job I am in belief that he will have to adapt new tactics and a new system to improve the results on the pitch.  Also important is that he will have to make better quality signings with less transfer money. So you could say that the owners will want to get more bang for their buck.

Personally speaking I was embarrassed by Daglish's handing of the Suarez matter because it only made the club look bad. Also not a fan of his lack of professionalism when he dealt with annoying reporters. He needs to maintain his composure when he is under fire or else he will just give the media more ammunition.

Love to see him replaced with a better manager who can make us more competitive since the competition is not lying down for us to get our act together. If we are stuck with him I expect a newer improved Daglish.

Zulu said...

For every Torres there was an Ngog and Voronin, for every Alonso a Nunez and El Zhar, for every Garcia a Gonzalez and Zenden, for every Reina a Carson and Itandje, for Agger a Paletta and Pelegrino, for Skrtel a Mavinga and San Jose and finally for Mascharano a Bruna, Leto, Pennant and a Plessis. You couldn't go on and on because you've just about named all Rafa's success stories but I can.... Keane, Aqualani, Morientes, Hobbs, Anderson, Barragan, Riera, Pacheco. The fact is he got a lot more wrong than he got right. Yes Kenny hasn't done a very good job and has wasted money but if you count up the money wasted on all the players I've listed it adds up to an awful lot.

Nick said...

i think tom was under the notion like all of us that kenny would've started his strongest team so that if we went out we would have at least gone out guns a blaring.... not henderson spearing duo, lone striker, downing x_x, poor cowardly out fo depth first half.... even though werner said that it is performances that count not results and our performance in that FA cup match just like our result was abysmal

chibuzo akobundu said...

most of us are actually true supporters who just like to speak our mind no matter if it goes against what your believe is the way the club should be run. We hit the woodwork many times is not an excuse the owners really want to hear. They don't personally give a shit about the wood work . They want results. I hope Daglish doesn't use that lame excuse when he confronts the owners in Boston. If he does his ass is toast.

Boyspen53 said...

It was on the 3.30pm news bulletin on TalkSPORT.

HEK80 said...

San Jose who is now one of the finest defenders in La Liga?? So you're looking at his youth team players that failed? The point is they are minimum risk. You could list 90% of Wenger's youth teams as well!!

chibuzo akobundu said...

listen since we can't fire all the players we can fire the man who thought some of them were good enough to play at this level. Daglish has refused to take responsibility for anything negative that has happened this season but is taking responsibly for Carling cup success. I believe he has to adapt a new set of tactics and mentality to lead us to victory if he is given another chance.

He is as much to blame as anybody else that's for sure. If he can't take the hot seat that comes with coaching at this level he should try coaching in the lower leagues.

I think the defining factor for the owners is can they trust kenny with another transfer kitty based on whats happened this year, coz if things go wrong and KD is sacked by xmas, obviously the new manager will want another load of cash to spend.  If they do let him go who's really out their with the creditials to manage a huge task. I would some like Pep Guardiola, Ancelotti or (wishful thinking but will never happen) Mourinho.  Tough one to be honest, I actually feel sorry for the owners because they have kept to their promise and for once we can actually can be proud of how they have conducted themselves since taking over.  Could we have ever imagined to say nice things about another set of american owners.  What some people have forgotten is the game has been moved on and is a result driven business which is not a bad thing as it makes it one of the most exciting leagues in the world.  Things move fast on and off the pitch. And to be in a job for 17months and spend the money we have, win carling cup (only just by penalty shoot out against a championship side) is not good enough.  In life you aim to for no.1 and then u might get worse case 3-4 place.  You aim for 4th and u finish 8th.
The winning mentality and desire has to be there from the start and its something u do not need to teach or wait 1-2 years for players to develop.  Thats a load of crap..its all about how badly u want it and I ask one question if it was any other manager would they have been able to last a season like ours.  I dont think so why should kenny get special preferences at the expense of the club.
NO ONE IS BIGGER THAN THE CLUB AND WE HAVE TO STOP MAKING EXCUSES FOR KENNY, WHAT HE DID IN THE PAST IS THE PAST.  IT HAS NO RELEVANCE TO THE CURRENT OR FUTURE OTHERWISE PEOPLE IT WILL BE ANOTHER 22 YEARS BEFORE WE GET A SNIFF AT THE MOST IMPORTANT TROPHY, THE PREMIER LEAGUE.  I KNOW ROME WAS NOT BUILT IN ONE DAY BUT AFTER 38 LEAGUE GAMES THERE SHOULD BE SOME PROGRESSION, SORRY BUT THE CARLING CUP IS SEEN AS A SIGN OF DESPERATION AND SHOULD BE SEEN AS A BONUS AND TOP 4 SHOULD BE THE BEAR MINIMUM.  CAN U IMAGINE IF WE HAD MADE BETTER BUYS LAST SUMMER WE WOULD HAVE BEEN MUCH CLOSER IN OR AROUND 4TH.

Ngog, Voronin, Kromkamp, Degan, Dossena, Carson, Pelegrino, Keane, Aqualani, Riera, Pennant, Morientes and Leto were all signed to be in the first team squad. San Jose whenever I've watched Bilboa in the Europa recently has been sub. Can't be that good.

then maybe they should also seek advice from Valencia fans of how he made a middle table team beating such weaklings as Barcelona and Madrid?

IT'S OFFICIAL!! THE MANAGERIAL MERRY GO ROUND HAS STARTED. MARTINEZ WILL BE WITH US, BY THE END OF THE MONTH. WIGAN ARE TO REPLACE HIM WITH GUARDIOLA. BRENDAN ROGERS TO VILLA AND SWANSEA ARE TO REPLACE HIM WITH OWEN COYLE. BOLTON ARE TO REPLACE HIM WITH ME ( ANYONE WITH ANY SENSE WILL HIRE ME, DUE TO MY FANTASTIC RECORD ON THE 'PLAYER MANAGER' SERIES OF GAMES). JOHN TERRY IS TO RETIRE, TO TAKE OVER PRODUCTION OF THE 'JEREMY KYLE SHOW',WITH RYAN GIGGS AND ROONEY. SO OFF WE GO PEOPLE, IT'S GONNA BE A HELL OF A RIDE!!!!!

Forget any manager in the champions league. For me, it is proven success of O'Neill, who never underachieves anywhere. Potential and, now, something to prove of AVB or potential, and style, and ability to conduct himself with decency of Martinez. His teams play good football and many people say he had more to do with Swansea's style of play than Rodgers. He's done a good job with both clubs and done a great job with Wigan and shown a good eye for good British youngsters. So, he knows how to scout players.

Bekim said...

A Ferguson signed shit players too but that doesn't mean that he's bad mngr does it. Bosnich, Taibi, Jemba Jemba(new Roy Keane) Bellion,Barthez, and after paying around 27 million for Veron sold him soon after for 14 million to Chelsea. RAFA signed rubbish players too most of his expensive ones were sold for profit. Current players Agger, Reina,Skertel, Lucas r worth more than he paid for.

Jaimie K said...

Agree re O'Neill - I've been calling for him to be given the job for the last 10 years. Having said that, I fear he may be too old now.

OriginalChan said...

To qualify as one of the finest defenders in La Liga, one should at least be a regular first XI player, which San Jose isn't. He is simply a competent La Liga defender at the moment, nothing more.

Gary352 said...

Martinez? Please!!! I am impressed by his run of results for Wigan but he is NOT the solution. Its much like Andy Carroll's 3 unbeatable months in the Newcastle shirt. Its all HYPE. What we need is someone with a LONG track record. I say go for Benitez. We have screwed up big time with player purchases, and will not have a significant amount of investment for next season. Benitez can work wonders with signings, and he will also coach Liverpool into a team that is hard to BEAT. His system of 4-2-3-1 will fit perfect for Liverpool as well.
                             Johnson Skrytl Agger Enrique
                                       Lucas Aquilani
                               Suarez Gerrard Downing
                                          Carroll

How many of those players you named were purchased for the first team, how many were purchased for the squad? when it came to buying players for the first team (THE BIG MONEY BUYS, NOT THE FREE TRANSFERS AND UNDER 5 MILLION BUYS) then he got it right. Dalglish spent 8 million on Adam 20 million for Downing, 35 million on Carroll, and 17 million on Henderson. These were all players that Daglish purchased to use for the FIRST 11. And even if Benitez purchased the same players, he would have had the sense to bench these players instead of being stubborn. 11 million on Alonso, 18 million on Mascherano, 22 million on Torres, 8 million on Riera, 10 million on Kuyt, 18 million on Aquilani, Rodriguez and Voronin were F.T.

Hope kenny is not sacked.......he is the best manager you can get.....he has worked wonders in the last 18months....he is through and through Liverpool.....he needs to be given at least 5yrs and if at end of 5 yrs if he is still unlucky then he should be given the choice of whether he wants to continue to help Liverpool or go upstairs.

If it wasn't for kenny we would have been relegated...we owe kenny big time....

Fenway please please please give kenny all the support he deserves

OriginalChan said...

Aquilani barely played. Didn't even get into double figures, in relation to league starts. Rafa bought a injured player. Not exactly risk-free, even without hindsight.

But agree that he got most of his big signings right, which is to be expected. Though what is unimpressive, most of his small signings failed to turn into first XI players whilst he was there. Doesn't matter if they were bought cheap, doesn't necessarily mean Rafa didn't have the faith (at the time of purchase) that they aren't first XI players (as you got a team like Arsenal who sometimes spent peanuts on players and some of those players in question did go onto become successes in the short term, let alone long term). To imply that all small money signings as squad players and big money signings as first XI players is just naive or apologist's revisionism.

HEK80 said...

yes some of his signings weren't great, but he didn't really get the chance to work with Aquilani. All the rest aren't a dot on Downing, Adam and the prices paid for Henderson or Carroll. Do this - find out all of his signings,  what they were bought for and what they were sold for? What is the Nett?? Not far off 0!!! How much would we get for KDs signings. Rafa did a lot more for Liverpool too like revamping youth and medical facilities. If something wasn't working he changed it!!!
He made mistakes of course he has - name me one manager who hasn't?? Never said he was a God, just that he is a great manager!

HEK80 said...

That's not what he said at all. Look at Evra's price tag - similar to Reina, Agger, Skrtel, Arbeloa, Garcia - all bough for first team

Zulu said...

He also had us losing away at Burnley, at home to Barnsley and home to Reading. We was also losing 2.0 at home to a non-league team. He wasted money just as badly as Kenny has done and then unbelievably tried to sell Alonso so he could buy Gareth Barry. He should never be allowed anywhere near Anfield for that decision alone. Brazil 1970.....Please!!

Getdager said...

Get this, Alonso was not that good for Liverpool in the first season. And I have to say this even though I am a huge fan of him. Got his name on one of my shirts. Rafa wanted Barry in to replace Alonso but that is because he was not playing well. When Alonso realised that, he got spurred on to play better, which explains his transformation. But by then he already had a grudge and was intent to leave Liverpool even though Rafa wanted to retain him.  It was not the fault of Rafa.

Guest said...

plus since when introducing competition in the same position a bad thing for football? Alonso didn't like it so he decided to leave.

Guest said...

lol, did rafa ever have enough money to waste 100 million in one go? He lost to barnsley so what? Man United lose with smaller teams once in a while and nobody tells fergie to leave.

Elysiumfields said...

wow arent we all excited on here, with no news imagine if there wera actaully some information to go on.

now the papers say dalglish position unclear, well to everyoine except him.

lets wait and see the news shall we before the peopel who are to young to know what KK did for the club shout the king is dead long live the king

Guest said...

the same thing can be said with daglish's previous success with liverpool when he took over the team from fagan and presley, they were winners were they not? You make rafa sound like a bad manager, and that kind of opinion he doesn't deserve.

Alanable said...

The same could have been said about Roy Hodgson at Fulham. Its not just as easy as bringing in a manager and giving him resources.  It still takes one who can motivate expensive players and choose them.

Ipfreely said...

I believe the owners are making this situation with KK as easy and delicate where possible. If he is dismissed then they wil find a solution whey by his rep stays intact. The owners are worried if they keep him on and give another say 30-50 mil. And by christmas the club is nowhere near 4th spot they have wasted another season and over 150 mill of they money in the process.

I would want Rafa back as AVB and Martinez are not proven at the highest level. The other reason is that he not KK built the youth and reserve system even KK admitted plenty of times that Rafa build the acadamy. Where now you are seing players such as sterling, suso, coady, morgan, kelly, robinson who I think should be our number 1 left back (he is that good). And it makes sense as most the first team was bought by Rafa. Agger, skirtel, johnson, reina, kelly, lucas, aqualani, maxi, kuyt who by the way will play all of hollands games in the euros.

Zulu said...

What do you mean so what? We lost at home to....Barnsley, a team in the division below. Isn't it because of crap results that it looks like Kenny is going? Nobody tells Fergie to leave because he's nearly always at the top of the league. So what, what a ridiculous reply.

trutherts said...

why AVB couldnt steer a chelsea side to top four what makes you think that he can steer a weaker liverpool side higher up the table.

the main players in the current squad (yes im talking about the ones that can play football are all benitez's signings agger, skertel,johnson,lucas......

now look at dalglish , adam, carrol, downing, henderson, enrique, suarez yet only suarez has come good enrique and bellamy had strong starts and finished poorly after signing 9 players the first team still has more benitez signings then dalglish's

I think Clarke did a great job this season. Being a defensive coach , the only improvement i have seen in LFC this season is their defensive record. Credit to him.

OriginalChan said...

I don't fall for that Aquilani excuse. Rafa's own fault for bringing in a injured player. That was a stupid decision.

Regardless of whether net spend is high or low, it doesn't justify poor value for money in relation expenditure. Aquilani has been a waste of money and so were the many low cost signings, almost none of them worked out to be first team material, which is diabolical.

OriginalChan said...

He implied it (less then £5m) and the examples you have given all (i think) cost over £5m, which is the threshold that the fella above me set. Yes, I was wrong to use Evra's transfer as I thought he was below £5m but I'm not a Manc, so can't blame me for not being exact. But the principle still is correct, Wenger has pulled off a few below the £5m mark for the first team. At the end of the day, many of Rafa's 'less than £5m- buys turned out be nowhere near good enough. That was unacceptable.

OriginalChan said...

I never said or implied that he was a bad manager. I simply disagree with your disrespect of Cuper's achievements and the squad that Rafa inherited. You were trying to illustrate Valencia were mediocre, when they weren't.

I generally disagree with those who make out Rafa to be the messiah and saviour. That was the principle illustrated with the terd to diamond line.

Just for you, I'll say it out loud...he is a good manager.

THE FACT IS, WIGAN HAVE STRUGGLED EVERY YEAR AND MARTINEZ HAS NOT REALLY MADE ANY IMPROVEMENT ON, SAY, FINISHING MIDDLE-TOP HALF OF THE TABLE. EVERYONE GOES ON ABOUT HOW GOOD HIS TEAMS PLAY/PASS. HE SIGNS 5TH RATE PLAYERS LIKE GARY CALDWELL!! I HAVE A KEEN INTEREST IN THE SPL, ESPECIALLY CELTIC AND TAKE IT FROM ME, HE IS SH*T. HOW HE GETS AWAY WITH PLAYING IN THE PL IS BEYOND ME. SO WIGAN DON'T HAVE MUCH MONEY AND HAVE TO GET WHAT THEY CAN? THERE ARE FAR BETTER PLAYERS OUT THERE, BUT HE COULDN'T GET THEM. CALDWELL HAS CONTRIBUTED MASSIVELY TO THE GOALS AGAINST TALLY.  THIS JUST BACKS UP MY NOTION, THAT MARTINEZ' SCOUTING NETWORK ISN'T MUCH BETTER THAN OURS.

Gab said...

the reality is it's astonishingly poor finishing to find the net including own goals 47 times while missing by hitting the woodwork 40 times as well as missing more than 50% penalties taken.
Here is a site that factors in shots that hit the woodwork as at the end of March after 30 games http://infostradalive.com/post/20169494489/infographic-premier-league-woodwork-analysis
Going through the permutations of what if hitting the woodwork had been a goal and what impact it would have on final results and points, Liverpool would have gained an additional 11 points and be 5th but still outside the top 4 and only 3 and 4 points ahead of Chelsea and Newcastle respectively.
Arsenal did not have any net gain but would still have been 5 points ahead while the gains by Spurs would ensure Liverpool was firmly outside the top 4.
Its worth noting that Newcastle went on to have a great run in April while Chelsea and Everton clawed their way back while Liverpool continued to lose their way
According to msn
http://sport.uk.msn.com/blog/talking-tactics-blogpost.aspx?post=6f9d224a-1ef8-40ed-bdef-208ff87a449c Liverpool hit the woodwork 33 times and the next is Man City who hit the woodwork 23 times but still scored 89 goals and you don't hear them agonise over hitting the woodworkThere is no bad luck in that but what is obvious is Liverpool have progressively got worse in terms of goal conversion. Gerrard and Kuyt did not miss many penalties before this season but the role call of misses this season reads like the who is who of Liverpool with Gerard, Kuyt, Suarez, Carroll, Adam and Downing all missing.Liverpool need to practice more given the seem to go through many matches bereft of energy after the usually 15 minute burst where they press teams so well.
All these point to areas a manager could have addressed but failure to do so has now led to players not responding to management at all because none seemed to be playing to relieve pressure from their manager.
Because of the above I believe luck, bad or good had nothing to do with Liverpool finishing 8th because the club simply reaped the sum total of the fruits of their labour..All the teams that finished ahead bar city spent less than Liverpool to improve much more.
Arsenal lost more key layers when the season had started while it was largely Liverpool's choice to let go of players except Meireles even though it would have made no difference had he stayed because he was clearly no longer considered first choice.
