Dalglish in personal scouting trip to watch £10m midfield star? Worth a bid?

When Swansea came to Anfield earlier in the season, Brendan Rodgers' team put in a superb attacking performance, and arguably played Liverpool off the pitch. Kenny Dalglish attended Swansea's game against Bolton last Saturday, and it could've just been preparation for the Reds' final league game of the season on May 13, but it's more likely that Dalglish was there to run the rule over some of Swansea's players.

Along with scouts from several other clubs including Man United and Everton, Dalglish was reportedly there to watch on-loan Icelandic star Gylfi Sigurdsson.

The £10m-rated midfielder has grabbed seven goals and two assists in fourteen starts for Swansea since arriving in January, a return that has seemingly piqued the interest of top Premier League clubs.

There are, of course, plenty of other Swansea players Dalglish could've been watching, including the likes of Scott Sinclair, Nathan Dyer and goalkeeper Michel Vorm, all of whom I would love to see at Anfield.

I doubt Dalglish would go the Bolton-Swansea game as preparation for the final game of the season; that game is pretty meaningless, and he could've just sent one of the club's coaches to watch it, and then report back.

What do you think? Sigurdsson as a potential signing in the summer? Will Dalglish even be here in the summer to make transfer decisions? If he's scouting players then he must feel pretty secure in his job, or why bother?

  1. I have little trust in Dalglish's ability to spot a good player. Sometimes Liverpool fans can figure out better about a player than him. A lot of fans shouted for Nikica Jelavic during january transfer window but stubborn Dalglish kept trusting Carroll.
If we bought Jelavic, our position in league could have been different. I think Everton got a deal for just £6 million.
I worry Dalglish will buy another donkey for millions.

  2. We have not had much luck at Home it is true but there are 8" of posts and 8 yards of goal ! as for a midfield player i would suggest, no demand that it is goalscoring strikers that we need.

  3. Nikica Jelavic? Really? Do You really argue that Nikica Jelavic is a player Who match Liverpool's standards?  What a joke......

  4. Exactly. People scratching about for anything that seems remotely plausible. What, are we desperate now?

  5. Why is it a joke? Jelavic has grabbed 8 goals and 2 assists in 12 games since arriving in January; that's more than Downing, Carroll and Henderson have managed ALL SEASON. Obviously he's good enough for LFC, or any other team in the Premier League. The proof is in the pudding: he scores goals in the league; end of story.

  6. Who would you prefer in the Liverpool team right now on GOAL SCORING FORM AND ABILITY????...Caroll or Jelavic??....goal stats don`t lie and right now the Everton lad and indeed the Everton team are playing better ...sure we`ve beaten them 3 times this season, but don`t matter one bit if Everton top Liverpool in the league table at season`s end...A lucky cc cup win against a championship side and at this rate,no chance through lack of goalscoring against Chelsea in FA Cup final,is NOT GOOD ENOUGH FOR LFC...a very, very poor season,no escaping that when we look at the table at the end of this season.....hope Mr John W Henry is a magician!!!!!

  7. Kenny
Dalglish’s time is up as Liverpool manager!
This Liverpool under him cannot be called a real football team at any
    point!  Unfortunately Damien Comolli’s
belief that the restrictions placed upon him led to Liverpool signing
average players who have underperformed this season is becoming a
nightmare!  The LFC fans in all over the
world are counting the days to pass as they can sit and watch their beloved
team make them proud not embarrass and humiliate them.  Against West Bromwich the flashing amber
light switched off and the flashing red light switched on!  Standard Chartered is paying for sponsorship £
20,000,000 a year, Warrior sports will be paying £
25,000,000 per year, so John W. Henry and Thomas Werner should protect those
sponsors’ investments by coming face-to-face with the reality.  We will all be grateful to Kenny Dalglish, we
would love to see him remaining with us by occupying another position to the
club, but LFC NEEDS A WORLD CLASS MANAGER, PERIOD!!!  All those who firmly support Kenny Dalglish it’s
time for them to realize that LFC is no longer a local brand, it is a global
    brand! That's why the current LFC's owners are not British but Americans;
that's why LFC is attracting fans from all over the world that passionately
live and breathe to see this historic club return back to its glory days!

  8. There is absolutely no guarantee that if Jelavic came to Liverpool that he would hit the goal-scoring form that he has for Everton. Look at all the new signings that have not performed for LFC this season, they were exactly in the Jelavic mould, decent (not outstanding) players for their own teams but on arriving to Liverpool struggled to match the performance levels at their old clubs. The only difference with Jelavic is that he didn't cost the earth.

There can be no guarantee, therefore, that a player will hit the ground running on joining a team like Liverpool. Chances are increased if the player is one of extreme quality and pure talent, much like Suarez.

  9. I think its time Liverpool stopped filling their side with overpriced EPL talent and looked abroad for players and make these scouts earn their money.

  10. May be Jelavic could have not scored 8 goals for Liverpool but with my limited understanding of football, I look for a player's effort, positional awareness and smartness when he gets ball. Jelavic gets all point for that but Carroll don't. On that basis, I would buy Jelavic before Carroll at any time. Watch Jelavic's (Rangers) and Carroll's
(NewCastle) old videos . Carroll never had guile and agility a good striker should have. I don't know what Dalglish saw in him when he bought him.

  11. If you don't think Liverpool is in a desperate situation now I guess it takes relegation for you to realise that.
We are having a season where it is very possible we will end up with more losses than wins because after the West Brom loss the table reads 12 wins, 12 losses and 10 draws. We could also end up with more draws than wins for crying out loud from the remaining 4 games.
Both united and city already have scored 10 goals or more at  home than our combined home and away goals.
City and United also have 36 goals apiece away from home which is 4 less than our total of 40 goals from 34 games and it is plausible that their away goals will also beat our season total.
We may also finish 40 points or more less than the 2 manchester clubs given they are already 37 and 34 points ahead already with 9 points to play for.
Our record in 2012 of 3 wins 3 draws and 9 losses is truly awful and the worst I have ever known over the run of 15 games with Only Wolves faring worse than that.
In the first 19 games of this season of this season spanning  August 2012 to December 2012,after 9 wins, 7 draws and 3 losses the manager along with many fans claimed we were being unlucky to hit the post so often but the consistency of poor performances since then proves we may actually have been lucky to hit the post at all.
Note that our 9 losses in 2012 from 15 games now match our 9 wins from 19 games in 2011. This really means the team is on a downward trajectory and doesn't augur well for next season if the argument that a good run precedes a title challenge in the next season, the opposite must also be true that an awful run can precede an even worse season.
This is just too many negative record being broken especially after the manager even made title aspiration noises earlier in the season
Right now I believe, Newcastle, Arsenal, Tottenham, Chelsea, United and City are all ahead on merit and will likely remain so next season if we keep our current scouting team which is potentially the worst in the premier league. for the sort of money they have at their disposal.
Liverpool needs to watch Borrusia Dortmund who have just won the Bundesliga title using the stated aims of FSG of identifying undervalued talent, Shinji Kagawa plucked from the Japanese second division while the team that played the last few games were all 23 years or under beating money bags Bayen who have world class expensive players in their ranks.
We could do with poaching their scouting talent to replace the one that rates Downing ahead of Mata according to an article on goal.com.

  12. Cant say I know too much about him...
However a quick search reveals an interesting option that ticks many of the boxes.

    He's described as a 'a set-piece specialist with great long-range shooting ability'.

Sounds like he might be a Charlie Adam replacement.
He certainly looks a goal threat from anywhere outside the box.
Anyone know why Hoffenheim are selling ?

  13. I agree, Jelavic wouldn't make it at Liverpool, the pressure would get to him, just like Carroll. Liverpool need top class players.

    ReplyDelete
  14. before looking to sign a goal scoring midfielder or a midfielder of any sort sort out the striking options and lack of goals I think clint dempsey would be a perfect signing

  15. Totally agree, spot on. This is not progression.

  16. The team need to stop looking at the 'form' players and start looking for long term potential. This guy is just this year's Charlie Adam.

  18. Dalglish and Commoli bought simply on statistics and at inflated price. You don't buy players simply on statistics coz statistics without details and context is nothing.I read somewhere that a Swansea midfielder, based on statistics, is better than Xavi. That's how Dalglish ended up buying Carrol,Downing,Henderson,Adam etc.We need a better manager.

  19. ANOTHER MATHEW LE THISSIER.GET HIM KK

  20. it happened with Adam. He was good with Blackpool, but in fact he has no europe experience... When was last time swansea promoted to BPL? this idea will not work i think...

  21. if KD is entrusted with anymore money, the yanks are not all there.
KD still thinks its the early 90's.
10m for this guy could be risky imo, there's no pressure at swansea, less as he's a loanee with little at stake. he does look good, but we should have got him when he was available for loan in jan. our scouting network has gone to shit since rafa left.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Not sure about that. His head seemed to be pretty screwed on when he was scoring twice against United yesterday and against us in the cup. His performance showed he can handle the pressure. We don't need a fancy flicks player up front., we need a natural goal scorer, like United had with Nistelrooy.

  23. Gylfi Sigurdsson would be a great addition to our squad, he is a very creative midfielder and we could surely use that. Besides, we haven't had a player who can score from freekicks post-Riise. I have been watching this guy lead Iceland's under 21 to glory in the Euro championship, excell at Reading, becoming a top scorer for Hoffenheim last season even though he joined them in January and was playing off the bench. And last but not least, this would be a perfect signing for ManU and we don't want them to add his ability to their squad, do we?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Gylfi SigurĂ°sson will NEVER and I mean NEVER join Liverpool, I am a lifetime Liverpool fan, and live in Iceland. Gylfi is a hardcore Manc, He hates LFC.

  25. look chaps lfc need to bring back rafa torres mascherano and alonso then we will have a squad ready to challenge on all fronts end of mr henry put your money in the right hands[rafa] and you'll laugh all the way to the bank

  26. i think there is more to his game, he is a proper AM, Adam is a joke. Sigurdsson is only 22 and has plenty of potential he would be well worth a shot, looks much better than most of our summer transfers

    ReplyDelete
  27. sometimes money and the opportunity can turn heads around, look at solskjaer, he was a liverpool fan....

    ReplyDelete
  28.  Much rather we just kept Aquilani.

    ReplyDelete
  29. It's never that simple, but admittedly, we'd be much better off if we had him.

    ReplyDelete
  30. We should definitely buy Stewart Holden if Bolton go down.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Our most important addition to our midfield next season will be a fit again Lucas.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Looks like a class act. Wonder why a player of his talent would ever be allowed to go on loan by Hoffenheim?! I would like to see him scoring more often from open play than set-pieces - but then again when our players cannot even score from penalties, i changed my mind...

    ReplyDelete
  33. I know it sounds terrible but don't think I'd send Kenny for a bottle of milk on his own

    ReplyDelete
  34. I would venture to say "desperate" is exactly the word for it!

  36. I am a lfc fan since Shankly took over.I sit at home drawing pension credit and yet have more football knowledge than any lfc scout but they would never give me a job because if you haven't played football at the highest level you are deemed ignorant.I saw the potential of walker and naughton when they first came into the sheff utd first team(both snapped up by spurs) lennon at leeds(also spurs) glen johnson at west ham we later paid mega bucks for him.I watched sunderland and was mystified why people were going on about henderson, downing at middlesborough where clearly adam johnson was a far better bet.If the papers and other tossers come out and say this player is good or the other is good we seem to take their word for it and go out and buy them no matter how shit they are.I don't believe we have any scouts at all and we just rely on what the papers say.So brace yourself my frustrated friend for more shite signings and another shite season next time around.I for one am getting totally pissed off with it all.

  37. A defensive midfielder ?? In case you haven't noticed its lack of goals is the problem..

Lucas is hardly the answer to that..

  38. Some good news : the bonding sessions are working and the poor league form doesn't seem to be affecting any of the lads golf , anyone know if the new lads handicaps have improved since joining ? Hope so , bless em , cos you can't fault there effort or there preparation . Aquilani and Miereles wouldn't have brought much to these bonding sessions " Kenny moves in mysterious ways his wonders to perform " ( actually don't know if A and M play golf ) but if I was having a bet I'd say not .

  39. Obviously worth taking a look at , and can have a knock at Celtic Manor while he's down that way , take big Jocky with him share the driving , he's had worse idea's

    ReplyDelete
  40. . . . . . and he's a 28 handicapper

    ReplyDelete
  41. Agree , and it's more than worrying that Kenny seems to think alls well it's all down to bad luck , the players can't be faulted . Actually the players have done ok in three derby games , two home games against both Manc clubs , against both Manc clubs in cup ties , big games against Arsenal and Chelsea , games that motivation is automatic , it's just there , goes with the occasion or whatever , but where's motivation in other games , isn't that the Manager's and Coach's job ? The crowd the media etc do it for the big games , but who does it when it's really needed . SHANKS used to have players believing they could run thru brick walls , they were ten feet tall and more than anything it was a privilege to play for LIVERPOOL FOOTBALL CLUB , for the people so always give your best , he lifted players , made them play . Who motivates and lifts them now ?

  42. Oh yeah ! Champion's League here we come , Pep , Jose , Purple nose etc must be shitting themselves
