SAVAGE: Liverpool fans wouldn't mind if Gerrard left for Man City in January...

As I'm sure every Liverpool fan remembers, Steven Gerrard almost became a Chelsea player on two separate occasions during the mid-2000s. Thankfully, he decided to stay at Anfield, but almost 7 years later, Gerrard still hasn't won what he desires the most: the league title.

Time is running out for Liverpool's captain, and former Leicester City and Blackburn Rovers midfielder Robbie Savage believes that Gerrard must leave Anfield if he is to achieve that goal:

"I'm sure Gerrard doesn't regret turning down Chelsea and Real Madrid in summer 2005 to stay with Liverpool.

"In the euphoria of the Champions League comeback in Istanbul - one of the greatest individual performances I've ever seen - he did the right thing by giving his club the best possible chance to win a title.

"But that is gone now and I'm sure no-one on Merseyside would begrudge him if, say, Chelsea or Manchester City came in with a shock offer for him in January.

"Of course, that's highly unlikely to happen and Gerrard will probably end his career without a title medal".

It would be a tremendous shame if one of Liverpool's greatest ever players ended his career without winning a league title, but that is a definite possibility at this stage.

Gerrard recently suggest that the 2014-15 season could be his last for Liverpool, and with injuries continually curtailing his career at the moment, time is quickly running out.

I was a huge critic of Gerrard's dual-flirtation with Chelsea; it seemed traitourous to leave at that time, especially when he had the privilege of captaining his hometown club at such a young age. However, Gerrard stayed and proved his loyalty, and if he was to leave now, I'm sure most fans wouldn't have a problem with it.

Like Steve McManaman before him, Gerrard has put his time in at Anfield, and if he wanted one last hurrah before hanging up his boots, who could begrudge him that?

As Savage says though, it's very unlikely to happen, but if Gerrard recovers from injury and gets back to top form, who knows...?

  1. I certainly wouldn't. He deserves that title like no other Premier League player.

  2. he will win title with liverpool , we have to believe that , and savage mind your own business

  3. I wouldn't begrudge him going abroad but I don't think he'll got to City just to win the title and of course, he's not going to go to Chelski either as they're as far away from it as we are. Maybe more so with there ageing team and sack-a-manager-a-month owner.

  5. how can you compare Gerrard with McManaman there is no comparison. McManaman lead the club to believe he was re-signing and then left on a free. Gerrard decided to stay showing his loyalty not only to the club, but to the support and the City he was born in. I believe Gerrard will never recapture the form of previous years. This injury could be, if not career threatening certainly career diminishing.

  6. if you draw against the likes of sunderland, norwich and swansea and beat the top 5 teams would not help you winning the league.2008-09 season it is the year that they should have won it but they didn't because they have the best squad since 1990.

  7. Savage got it all wrong. He better keep doing his dancing. Stevie wants a title WITH Liverpool , not just a title for the sake of it with just any nuveau riche club.

Stevie still got some time. Let's all hope that he will win it, and LFC will be where it belongs: Top of the League. I want him, and Carra, and Kuyt, and Reina who all served the club so well for many years get their well deserved trophy some day.

  8. Jaimie - the stuff you post gets more shit by the day. I am never going to read the fucking crap you write ever again. It's all complete shit. You are the most attention seeking useless piece of crap of a "football writer" I have ever seen. You don't support Liverpool at all. You are a parasite and everyone knows it. I wish you'd go support another club you twat.

  10. lowee - lots of your posts recently have been sniping and filled with derogatory comments. I've had to delete several because they were just filled with insults. If you don't like this site, don't visit - there are plenty of other LFC sites out there. The comment policy is clear: your views are welcome, but sniping and derogatory comments are not. If you continue to slag off this site, I will have no choice but to ban you.

  13. When United beat Arsenal 8-2 they had more chance than anyone to win the title the way they were playing. Now Man city have more chance than anyone to win the title the way they are playing. 'The Now' doesn't really matter. Its about whose up there in May. And Chelsea are likelier to finish above Liverpool. They have a better squad and more players with a 'winning' mentality. You have mediocre players, one rabbit and a horse. Savage was a premier league footballer. Which club did you play for ?

  25. Steve is one of the greatest player in Liverpool FC as well as in the world, and there is no doubt on that. He did a wise decision to came to Liverpool and working hard with other players to bring glorious to the Kop and Fans. Although Liverpool is still not that stable at the moment due to we have a lot of new comers during last summer and they need time to understanding each others. However, I believe that we will get the title soon where it just about the time.

  27. 'They have more players with a winning mentality'-is this the team that has lost 4 out of 5 games? How many have WE lost? Ok, we haven't finished some teams off, but we certainly don't have a losing mentality and that what Chelsea have at the minute. 'the now' matters if Chelsea continue to lose and look very average. I would begrudge him a move to Chelsea as I think we're at least as good as them, and to be honest I'd rather he didn't go to City. We're showing improvement, we're better then last year-improvement, and maybe Stevie G can win it with us. As for the fact that Robbie Savage is a premier league footballer so his opinion counts more, I could understand if he was an ex red or has an affiliation with the club, but he doesn't. He should talk less and dance more.

  28. he'd get in the first team any where , what did zidane say " best player in world " stevie said he was embarrased by that he should,nt have been if ever a player deserved to win it its steven gerrard , right up there with kenny as liverpool,s best ever

  29. Non story he won't leave now, just a thought... what meant more to shearer the title with blackburn or all those goals wearing the famous number 9 for the geordies... think we know the answer, same with stevie. Lets not forget he has won cups including the big one and the way things are going he might have chance of title he his latter years.

  30. Gerrard wants to win the title with Liverpool...he doesn't just want to win the title. And no - I would be upset if he left us for City or Chelsea...if he went abroad then I would be less disappointed, but disappointed nonetheless.

    ReplyDelete
  31. You rubbish Savage's opinion since he is not a ex-red or has any affiliation with the club. Then you trot out the 'I think we are atleast' as good as them. Well mate, one shoudn't blindly follow anyone but everyone's opinion counts even if that person is not affiliated with Liverpool Football club. Without trophies or a higher league finish there is no way you can claim that you are better than them and no amount repeating it will help. By may you'll be consigned to your rightful place like this year - the Europ .... oh hell !!!

  32. I thought that if Stevie was not injured, he was going to win the EPL this season provided the likes of Adam,Lucas,Suarez,Maxi,Kuyt and Bellamy are picked with him for starting berth.I mean, it would be a perfect eleven like at Barcelona everyone knows that for them to play tiki-taka,then, Iniesta,Xavi,Messi, busquet,Puyol,Pique,Abidal and Pedro must start.and barcelona won six trophies with the smallest squad or without quality subs. The thing irritates me everyday...to feel Stevie and Carra would retire without a medal even though sometimes patience pays,I hope this time it becomes a reality to the duo that patience pays,Come on almighty God...its not like we want minnows to win, they are the best across Europe and they've proven that in 2005.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I wouldn't mind him to go to City, to win PL title, but I wouldn't want him to go to Chelsea as LFC is better team than them, or at least should be next year.

In City Gerrard could at least help stop United from going +2 in over Liverpool in PL titles, and he would give Kenny some money to invest, hopefully this time not in British talent.

Highly unlikely but still... He wouldn't be "Judas" if he made that move.

  34. Cynical for a reason!1:26 pm, November 24, 2011

He rubbishes Savages opinion because he constantly spouts nonsense – listen to him on talk sport or read any of his columns. I’d rather listen to Jimmy Hill than this reactionary knee jerk idiot.

And by the way, not everybody’s opinion counts. Does Nick Grffin’s opinion count on a sensible discussion about immigration policy? NO!!!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I wouldn't begrudge him but I would be gutted.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I think Cynical has basically covered it for me, but just to add to that, you are saying without trophies or a higher league finish, well were talking about THIS season, we've beaten Arsenal and Chelsea away (we beat Chelsea twice last season) we're level on points with Chelsea and Arsenal, so who's blind? I'm going off the here and now because that's relevant to this discussion. And as your not a Liverpool fan (why are you in here by the way) your biased opinion counts as much as Savages. Very similar actually you and Savage, mediocre and giving your opinion when it's not wanted. Who do you support?

    ReplyDelete
  37. By the time he will retire he would have won at least one title medal with LFC. Come one man, these owners mean business and with a couple more signings + a couple of youngsters coming true we'll be there for sure.

  40. Of course we would begrudge him a move, Robbie Savage is clueless. No one would buy him now anyway

Stevie G was never moving to Chelsea. All a ruse to get buckets more cash and Moores / Parry swallowed it hook, line and sinker

Macca robbed Liverpool of a decent fee, shame on him

League medal for anyone else would be empty

  41. This aritcle is nothing but a pile of sick. To even suggest Gerrard to leave is blasphamy in itself. Adnd with regards to a title.... players go their whole career without a champions league trophy.. yet Stevie G has one. Liverpool are just getting settled with the change in ownership along with new players.... the title is coming. YNWA!

  42. I said the 'Now' doesn't matter. I don't care whether you are level with chelsea or arsenal or how you beat them away or anything. come may you guys will be below the above mentioned teams. Frankly because to be above them you will have to continuously punch above your weight (Rafa Style) and you donot have the mentality for it. We' ll address this post come May. Good day.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I'm still waitin to hear who you support and why your in a Steven gerrard/Robbie savage/Liverpool thread. An I don't care if you say the 'now' doesn't matter. It clearly does matter. Because'now were level on points an we've beat arsenal an Chelsea away-Dalglish style. Good day.
