Kenny Dalglish vs. Roy Hodgson: First 27 games comparison. Who did better?

My last article showed how Liverpool have improved across the board during Kenny Dalglish's first 27 games in charge, but how does Dalglish's team stack up against Roy Hodgson's?

This comparison of each manager's first 27 games provides the answer, and it's a lot closer than you might think.

Hodgson was constantly denigrated by fans but as the figures below show, on some levels, his results were not too dissimilar to Dalglish's:

KEY POINTS

* Under Dalglish, Liverpool score more, concede less, win more away games and achieve a higher points-per-game average.

* Hodgson achieved more home victories in his first 27 games, and managed 11 clean sheets (Dalglish has 12 so far).

* The most obvious improvement is in the league: in his first 20 league games, Dalglish has amassed 37 points (1.85 per game), whereas Hodgson only managed 25 (1.25 per game)

King Kenny's figures are clearly better, but they should be after having over 100m to spend, which is about 80 more than Hodgson was given.

Additionally, Dalglish arrived at a club on the up, with new owners and a comparatively stable infrastructure. Hodgson arrived in the eye of the storm, and had to contend with major boardroom unrest, lingering squad demotivation, and the negative aftermath of Rafa Benitez's atrocious final season.

Overall, the club is 12 league points better off under Dalglish, which bodes well for the future. It's kind of galling to note though that if those extra points had been achieved last season, Liverpool would've finished the in 4th place...

  1. Do you have a league match comparison? Considering that KK wasn't involved in Europa matches, and some of the Cup matches which RH got the club knocked out in.

  2. So King Kenny's record is better than RH's even though Hodgeson was in charge against teams like Rabotnicki in the Europa league teams....unfair comparison even though the King's result shine through.

Comparing transfer spend? HAHA, thank GOD hodgeson was not allowed any more money to spend! Instead of looking at amount spent how about looking at the quality of player brought in for the money? Kenny wins hands down again. Koncheksy & Poulson must have the displeasure of being 2 of the worst ever players to wear the red shirt!

That is the most important stat as Woys exploits in Europe were against inferior opponents.

Don't disguise the fact that our football was dire and we took our foot off the pedal the last two games of last season.

  5. Come on Jaimie.

Dalglish scores on average 0.6 more pts per game than Hodgson. Over a whole season thats 20 odd pts more. A massive difference. Dalglish arrived at a club on the up? Are you serious? Dalglish took over a club mired in the bottom half of the table and with a raft of their top players wanting to leave. Is is Dalglish that has made the board shine and not the other way round. 25 pts from 20 league games is disgraceful form and no excuse should be made. The more i see Hodgsons league stats the more i am horrified. I am not like you and don't place equal importance on misleading stats from inferior competions against inferior teams.

His league form was disgraceful,  and theres no two ways about it

  6. Of course the stats are pretty close! They normally are. However, if you were to compare Fergie's stats to Kenny's, you'll find their win ratios not too disimilar either!

In the history of the Premier League, there had only been 1 season where 20 victories on of 38 was insufficient to crack into the top 4. This means anything above 50% would typically be a solid season, but given how close last season had been, a constant 52% win ratio would have seen us finish at least 5th, if not 4th. A 44% win ratio is a mid-table stat.

  7. comparing 27 games from differing competitions is unfair, especially when roy had easy games in europe and kenny had his first game in the fa cup against utd.
What we really need to look at is not stats, its how you feel. After 27 games from hodgson, I was in the Kop with the rest of the fans calling for dalglish and "Hodgson for England". How do I feel after KK first 27 games, well it is a massive gulf compared to hodgson, I feel like we can achieve anything at the moment and would love to prove people wrong that we can challenge for the league. KK has brought a sense of achievement, pride, optimism, die hard passion and ultimate backing from all parties at the club. KK runs liverpool like he is taking a stroll in the park, it comes natural to him and fans and players are in awe of his presence. As for hodgson, his constant chin rubbing combined with bemusing press conferences and poor tactics, left players contemplating their careers, fans wondering what is happening, no hope, no optimism and for the first time I have ever know, the fans (96%) lost all respect for the manager. Statisitcs may prove that kenny ednges it over 27 games but in practical terms KK has proved doubters wrong about his ability and cemented the fact that Hodgson cannot run liverpool and should never have been given the job in the first place.

  8. I felt sorry for Hodgson how he got treated by some section of fans, but what King Kenny did straight away when he got the job, he got the fans on his side by raising to their aspirations and gave us hope. I think Hodgson never had that, he never realy understood the fans.
in regard to the game and results, I think he never got the best of our players and the style was very stale and I think we are in better position now than in last few years to have a go at top.

  9. I agree with Arebee; the board didn't say it wouldn't support Hodgson, but can you blame them for not wanting to spare cash looking at the quality he has signed, and the type of ambition he shows? And the stats are really different; to have an absolutely fair comparison, the variables must be exactly the same, which is impossible since things like form, squad players change over seasons. Add to the fact Dalglish got the team working almost instantly, picking up whatever you claimed Rafa left behind (which Roy used, add Poulsen & Konchesky) and made it better. Rafa might have had a poor season, but he never left a poor squad.

  13. no matter how you dress it all up though the fact is you remain a mediocre, middle of the table side with your two cup finals against us at man u to look forward to. king kenny? isn't that the same bloke who managed newcastle and celtic. face it. he lost all managerial credibility in the 90's and even more defending the nazi suarez.
