Glen Johnson: What does he bring to LFC? Time to cash-in before it's too late...

When Rafa Benitez signed Glen Johnson in 2009, I argued at the time that it was a mistake to spend such a large amount of money on a player that Liverpool (arguably) didn't need. Given the catastrophic failure of the two seasons he has been at Anfield, I'm struggling to see what specific, measurable impact Johnson has had on the team, and how he fits into the 'new' Liverpool under Kenny Dalglish.

Here are a few pertinent facts:
  • 2009: In Johnson's first year, Liverpool had their worst league season since 1994 (In terms of league placing)

  • 2008-9: Two league games were lost *all season*. Johnson arrived, and featured in 12 defeats in 35 games (over one third of all the games in which he appeared).

  • Johnson's arrival coincided with the club's worst overall season (all competitions) in decades, which included failure to get out of the group stage of the CL; a horrible 7th place league finish (and the consequent failure to qualify for the CL)

  • In two seasons, Liverpool has conceded 71 goals in 70 games with Johnson in the team, which equates to an average of one goal conceded every 1.1 games. It also equates to 67% of goals conceded overall.

  • As a comparison: In the two years before Johnson arrived (2007-2009) the team conceded 96 goals in 114 games, which is an average of one goal conceded every 0.8 games.

  • 2009-10: Despite Johnson's much-vaunted attacking prowess, he managed only 3 goals and 3 assists. Hardly surprising given that in the 7 years prior to joining Liverpool he averaged 1 goal and 2 assists a season.

  • 2010-11: Two goals and 3 assists this time as Liverpool fail to qualify for the CL for the second time in a row.

  • In two seasons for Liverpool, Johnson hasn't been able to beat his career-best figures for Portsmouth in 2008-9, where he got 3 goals and 6 assists in 37 games. Is this the level of return expected from an 18m player who is, apparently, 'amazing' going forward?

  • 42 of Johnson's 70 appearances have ended in defeat or draw (24 defeats; 17 draws), which means the club wins only 42% of games with Johnson in the team.

  • To put this in perspective, between 2007 and 2009, the team lost only 14 times in 114 games.
With these facts in mind, I seriously pose the question: How has Liverpool benefited from the signing of Glen Johnson?
  • How has the 18m been worth it?

  • What consistent, positive impact has Johnson had on the team?

  • How has Liverpool's defence improved with Johnson in it?
There's no getting away from the fact that Liverpool has had two of its most miserable seasons in living memory since Johnson signed. From where I'm standing, the team loses more games, concedes more goals and generally fails to qualify for the Champions League with him in the team.

I think it's also worth nothing that Johnson arrived in the infamous summer of 2009, when Rafa Benitez sealed his fate with a summer of counter-productive transfer activity. It is no coincidence that only Johnson remains from the players bought during that fateful transfer period.

I don't see how Johnson fits into the 'new' Liverpool. Jose Enrique is the new first-choice left back, so Johnson will not be needed there, and we have Martin Kelly, John Flanagan and Martin Skrtel (if need be) to cover the right back position.

Liverpool should sell Johnson in January to the highest bidder IMO - the older he gets, the harder it will be to claw back the 18m originally spent on him.

Liverpool is doing great at the moment, and I fear that Johnson, with his regular goal-gifting errors, will once again destabilise the defence when he returns to the team.

24 defeats in two seasons is more than enough, surely?

  2. This entire bashing of Glen Johnson is mindless crap. The entire team played terrible those two seasons and you blame it on JOHNSON? LOL!  I'm sure Johnson didn't cause all the goals to happen. Also he's a fullback, do you want him to have 20 assists a game? What he did was create chances time and time again, but who was there to finish with Gerrard and Torres injured?  Besides Lucas and Pepe Reina, not one player played well the last two seasons therefore I consider your claim sheer stupidity and blind judgement.

In fact I might petition them to do so.

  4. Have to agree Jaimie.   Give me a more defensively reliable (Kelly) any day. Time and again i have been dismayed at Johnson's defensive limitations,  Does he actually do much offensively either. I rarely see assists or shots on goal.  Nail on head article Jaimie. He's just signed a new contract last year but a long stay on the bench could ease him out. Kelly as long as he stays fit should keep him out

  5. Leave it out will you, you cant blame everything on Johnson,The players around him have not been a good standard until now and you will see how good he is when he comes back. There is no better man to get the best out of him than Kenny who recently offered him a new contract but i suppose you know better.

  6. To be fair his time has been hugely affected by injury so we are unlikely to be abe to get much if we sell him. although when he is in the team we seem to move the ball up the field on the right far quicker than without him.

Kelly will almost certainly evolve into a centre back so I personally am looking forward to a long period with GJ in the team - Him and Enrique overlapping wide will be very hard to deal with.

Generally, it is a bit unfair to compare Johnson's stats with those of 2007-9. Maybe you might compare the stats since he arrived with him in the team and then without him in the team for a fair comparison.

Granted he has not been a success to date. But I would point towards his injury record and the clearly awful transfer policy under H&G.

Now is his time, lets support him.

  7. Hello Jamie,
Although you have put up a good argument.... almost every statistic you use to lambast glen johnson is a team stat and not an individual stat eg " his arrival coincided with the worst run in the history of football" or "his win percentage was pathetic in 65% of his games" etc etc etc...... There is no "I" IN TEAM JAMIE!!
Fact is this is a very poor attempt at criticising glen johnson..... Kenny likes him and every time he is fit...he plays.
You can argue about whether 18 million is good value or not but the fact kenny likes him and has always stated that he likes him really makes this argument irrelevant.

  8. We had Torres in the 2009/2010 season, does that make him crap. Gerrard was in the team as was Reina. Just because Johnson was bought at the time doesn't mean it's his fault. I'm so sorry a fullback can't score loads and assist loads a season, idiot.

  10. Glen Johnson was pretty poor in his first season playing for us, in particualr he was poorin defending however I think he had improved since and last year he did not let us down at all whenever and were ever he played. I think King Kenny will get the best out of him by creating more competition in hs position and on left. he signed a new contract last year so I am gald to say that the new owner dont agree with you.

  14. Blaming the faults of a team over the last two seasons on one player is a load of shite. Honestly the utter crap you put on here is beyond belief its seems anyone can get there own crazy ideas published now. The lad has not even played this season yet, give him a chance to play in a team with flowing passes and movement and we will see the best of him. He played left back last season under the king a nd the lad just got on with it and done a great job. Cant think of many who are better and i remember rafa trying to buy luke young ha ha what a load of shite he is. If i remember correctly pompey owed us a few quid as well from crouch.

Before you threaten ban me might I just remind you of the "house rules", argument is suppose to tentatively based on some form of fact and informed argument mot mere coincidence - it just so happens that I saw one magpie on the Kop in 2009 just before I walked across three telephone grids - do you think that might also be to blame?

  19. Oh dear. Your back and doing your best to wind us Liverpool supporters up. Your stats are pointless. You can't say one player is responsible for the whole team doing so badly for so long.

    ReplyDelete
  20. my first question is why?? when liverpool are on the up..why try and cause some discontent...but fine, u say thats ur job..being critical and answering question..so ill give u that..

i am confused with ur stats..liverpool were pretty poor over the last 2 years, so to use the stats of a team..is meaningyless

i agree then GJ hasnt always been the best defensively but hes a good player, englands number 1 right back over the last few years, and right now were looking to build a strong squad and he is an expereinced and good player that i believe can definately add something to our team.

im confused why hes being picked on...

  22. You certainly know how to put a downer on what has been a great start to a season in a long time, as has been mentioned before there is no I in team and you cannot blame Glen for any one game we have lost or any poor season we have had since he joined us. Poor article.

    ReplyDelete
  23. what a waste of time. I wonder if the reason behind you dumb articles is just a ploy to get people on here and comment, if so you may succeed for a while but not for long.  If Glen was in a team that lost or gave away goals so were many other team members. If you want to pick out and blame a player take the time to give in depth facts on how many passes he made, how many tackles he lost etc. The stats you give are very generalised and not worth even looking at.  BTW I for one will never read any of your articles again as they are useless.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I am sure Kenny has a better view on him than any of us. He will be the best judge to use him or bench him. He is not definitely the best but a part player like Heskey in his time with the Reds.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Could not agree more with nearly all of the comments above

    ReplyDelete
  26. only valid point you bring across are his return of assists and goals scored which admittedly are poor but coincides with negative tactics employed by both benitez as well as hodgson. Stats aside, given his attacking ability, he would be better utilised as a right winger of which I have no doubt that he will flourish in.... until then however, lay off johnson!! other than that one point the rest of your argument is based on utter nonsense. Sure Glen Johnson might seem surplus as a right back with the emergence of young Kelly and Flanagan, however I do still believe he has an important role to play, the very least that role can be served in the form of squad depth..
I've read some of your other articles and have come to the conclusion that your articles are written with not an ounce of logic and you seem to use stats to back up your nonsense.. facts and stats don't lie, however it can be used to back up almost any claim.. you are a poor excuse of a writer and I implore you to stop polluting the internet with your views.  Surely comments you've read have given you some inkling of what a moron and how out of depth you are.. I don't blame you really coz you can't really help being stupid can you? just do yourself and the world a favour and do something else besides writing? gardening maybe?

    ReplyDelete
  27. This is a dumb article blaming GJ gor a poor team!
The fact is that he is still the best offensive right back in the country.
Regardless of whether you think Kelly is better than him we should still be aiming for 2 international class players for each position like man utd/city..
Youre thinking like a top 6 team as opposed to be thinking like champions!
This is why we should've tried to keep miereles for quality in depth..
Start thinking like u want to get back to winning the league instead of getting into Europe

    ReplyDelete
  28. What is it that prompts fans to look for fault in players who do their best for LFC?    I personally like Johnson, think he's done a good job for Liverpool and will continue to do so.  If Kelly does as well or better I'll be delighted - we'll then have even more competition!

    ReplyDelete
  29. You didn't answer my question. Do you ever get bored moaning?

  31. Where have I blamed the poor performance of the TEAM on Johnson?  I've highlighted specific instances of how Johnson has had a negative impact on the team.

    ReplyDelete
  32. The fact that Kenny 'likes him' does not make the argument irrelevant at all.  The bottom line is Johnson has been a defensive liability from day one, and has added nothing positive to the team.  Whether you like it or not, that's the truth.  If that's wrong, then please answer the three questions I posted in the article:

    * How has the 18m been worth it?* What consistent, positive impact has Johnson had on the team?* How has Liverpool's defence improved with Johnson in it?

    ReplyDelete
  33. Johnson has been at Liverpool for two years - should we just ignore how he's performed during that time?

    ReplyDelete
  34. I've read a few of your articles and although most are very poor, some does actually leave food for thought. This one unfortunately is worse than the worste one you already came up with. It's already been discussed what GJ brings to the side and further more no one in the previous 2 decades has come close to what he gives as a fullback. If you have to write something find something that makes sense please. It will get to a point sometime where people will just see your name to the article and skip to something else even if you decide to write some decent, you know the story of "cry wolf"

Anyway ... it's a bit unfair as many others has commented to blame him for a team effort. The team stats are pointless since it also includes all the places on the field that he does not run on. Most importantly ... goals also came through the middle and left of defense.

    Shame on you!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Yes, the magpie is clearly to blame.

  37. The stats are only pointless because they conflict with your own opinion and expectations.  The stats show that Johnson has added nothing to the team.  If they're wrong, then please post your counter argument illustrating how the team has benefited as a result Johnson's impact.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Just because Liverpool is on the up doesn't mean we all have to live in a fantasy land and stop analysing things.  I'm not trying to 'casue some discontent'.  Get over it!  I'm merely arguing that Johnson has not performed since arriving at Anfield and that, maybe, the club could benefit by selling him.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I see, so Johnson is completely blameless for all the defensive lapses that led directly to goals?  He doesn't have to take responsibility for any poor performances?  I get it now.

  43. You are a man utd fan. There was all these kind of destructive articles when we were looking strong under benitez and then when alonso left and also when Woy was in charge and we didn't look like a genuinely strong team you seemed to dissapear. Now your back and the Kanwar poison is starting back how long before you start  trying to get King Kenny out?

    ReplyDelete
  44. LOL. First you say your not blaming Johnson for Liverpool's bad season. Then you bring up how he had a negative effect on the team. How are those two statements any different?  When he started at Liverpool, he had some stellar performances; scoring a few goals and looked frightening when attacking. Until he got injured he lost that flare, but overall he is still a worthy player for Liverpool.  Defensively he can do the job, sure he may have been guilty of a few errors but players are not perfect. Its a team game, and if the defense are looking like rusted shackles then obviously goals are going to be leaking in. For instance, did anyone see Flanagan's mistake of ball watching vs Sunderland? Johnson i am sure of would have not made that mistake.  As for Kelly; people will start slating him for the same reason people are slating Johnson. They are both going to be struggling with injuries.  It may be worse for Kelly because he's still young. He's a bigger potential than Johnson was but in my opinion I would vote for Johnson as RB for now. Attacking wise he is a lot better and he will undoubtedly strike up chemistry with Downing when on the right.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Johnson SHOULD be use as a right-wing, period. Johnson can dribble, pass, cross, score from RW or RM. WHY insist of playing him as Right full back ? Kelly has more defensive football brain.

    ReplyDelete
  46. this site does nowt but critise our player,s catch your self on so what you can gather stats  so wa\t

    ReplyDelete
  47. Blame the damn games lost on the previous US OWNERS. "they started the ball rolling"  - the same players did well when LFC was bought bought by the NEW OWNERS.

    ReplyDelete
  48. We have to use him as right winger or sell him.  It's the only 2 options.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Just like Meireles, Johnson is expendable and the resulting money from his sale could be invested to strengthen other areas. We have the cover at RB and as mentioned in the article - his defensive abilities are not his strength, which is strange for a defender.  Admittedly, he is not solely to blame for the last couple of years performance - but is he a key member of our squad today.  Benitez bought Johnson as we could not afford quality wingers - which is not the case now. So, things have changed and if Kenny does not value his attacking abilities - then he will be sold and a more defensive minded player will be used. I think January may be a little early as Flanno & Kelly need a little more time - but I predict he will go possibly next summer. If we could swap him for Johnson from City without anyone noticing, I am sure Kenny would do so;-)

Maybe, one way to answer the question is ask another 'would KK buy him now for 18M?'... I dont think so!

Liverpool have transformed players in the past ie Ray Kennedy (centre forward to midfielder) why not Johnson ? As a defender he's a liability as a flying winger he could be a revelation

Someone has actually done this analysis properly on an individual performance basis as opposed to team performance - interesting reading, but ultimately no clear winner between GJ and MK. Now for some personal opinion. I am a big fan of Glen Johnson and think he has performed very well for LFC, in those dark years I actually thought he was one of the few players capable of doing something unpredicatble and exicting - the one thing that is always undervalued is his delivery for wide positions which I think is outstanding and should provide excellent service for AC. I have also been encouraged by MK's performances but agree that he is a long term centre-back as opposed to full-back (less sprinting should preserve his tender hamstrings).

All-in-all a wonderful problem to have two top level players vying for a starting place - I disagree completely with the author's point of view.

And one last nugget - who would you rather have in your pro-evo team? i thought so...

    ReplyDelete

  57. Johnson has been hot and cold over his anfield career. I do think we sould at least give him a chance and see how he performs under kenny, it may be the making of him. He is a very good player and he will have to play well as he has kelly breathing down his neck. he may even be useful as a right winger. Kenny has kept him so he has ides to use him, last year he played well under kenny and he was playing out of position on the left. I think it is better to judge him after having a season under kenny, if he performs he will no doubt stay, if not he will warm the bench and be sold. To be fair 6 months into last season, i cant think of a player other than lucas who actually performed well. Once KK arrived players seemed to transform from also rans into world beaters.

  61. Johnson is poor in defense and has given away many soft goals due to poor marking and tackling in his two years at anfield. I always thought he might be better being pushed forward and play him as a right midfielder/winger and if that doesn't work i agree sell him.

  63. We may have overpaid for him, but that money has been spent, move on, and judge him on HIS performances - it's totally unreasonable to hold the transfer against him, and judge him based on the performance of the team.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Jamie, can you categorically confirm how many goals Johnson was responsible for in this run?? If not, throwing statistics around doesn't really answer what may or not have been the fundamental issue in losing games. I would imagine those stats would be comparable with a lot of Liverpool defenders during the tome. Carragher in particular went through a lean spell in form, perhaps that was Johnson's fault also?? Whilst I agree too much money was spent on him, its unfair to single out one player as teh reason for losing a run of games!! I would imagine you would have been, or maybe still are calling for Lucas to be sold as he contributes little to the team?? I welcome your comments for debate??

    ReplyDelete
  65. 2 questions...

firstly...why are some peoples comments appearing in red...which also happen to be the ones that agree with the article?? coincidence?

secondly..GJ has been the first choice england right back for the last few years - i still believe he is someone who can bring a lot to liverpool - and calling for his transfer when he hasnt played this season..is wrong.

let him fight for his place and see how he plays..before casting judgements with stats that dont actually show him to be at fault....

http://lfcfooty.forumotion.com/t2602-full-back-comparison-glen-johnson-rb-martin-kelly-rb-glen-johnson-lbshow that Johnson is currently a better fb. I'm sure this will change as Kelly gets older but at the moment Johnson is definitely needed at the club. Don't think he was a waste of money at all. Needed an english player for home grown rule, Arbeloa gone needed rb so only possible rb choice at the time was Johnson. Every knows you have to pay extra if you get an English player. If you want people to agree with you or even take this article seriously I suggest you do a comparison like the one which URL I have posted in this post

  71. idiot. glen johnson has been one of the few bright sparks of the last few seasons. pompey didnt have what we were owed for crouch so we actually got  johnson for 7-8mil. he can play anywhere on the right you fool. why is it when we only just have a healthy looking squad you would want to sell someone who has alot to offer.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Do you not think the key statistic defensively was that in 2007-09, our period of strength, we had the immense influence of a certain Sami Hyypia (63 appearances in this period) to call upon (wheels began to come off before Johnson joined as it became clear that Sami was being stepped down - remember the 4-4 against arsenal and the 4-4 against Chelsea at the tail end of 09). We have never replaced Sami Hyypia and its your centre backs who provide your defensive backbone.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Why has he been 'one of the few bright sparks'? please outline your evidence for that. I've shown how he has not had any real impact on the club with hard facts. Just saying 'he's been great' doesn't make it so. Since arriving at Anfield, Liverpool have lost 24 games with Johnson in defence; have conceded 71 goals in 70 games, and failed to qualify for the CL, or mount a serious challenge for any significant trophy whatsoever.

What measurable impact do you expect him to have in a team performing so poorly? I am also assuming that Lucas, Carragher and Reina should be moved on as well because they contributed to the poor defensive performances in those two seasons?

  79. Yes thats right, its all Johnson's fault.  He is definitely the sole reason that we have done so badly over the last 3 years.  Noone else has played badly, just Johnson...

Why don't try writing a balanced article for once instead this endless tripe slating all and sundry.  I have no doubt you were one of the ones calling for Lucas' head a season ago too.  Thank God you don't hold any influence in the club.  Tart.

The only reason he hasn't offered much isdue to a lot of injuries and you can't keep stating how poor our record is when you don't know when he was a sub or carrying a knock or other little things such as someone else at the back playing rubbish. Also some of your statd are completely different to other stats sites so Sorry but your view is not what most other fans have. James P

  81. You havnt got a clue mate. How can you blame 2 dismal seasons on one player. Maybe johnson isnt the best defender in the world but to blame him for every goal we conceded in two seasoyns is laughable. When the king returnd johnson was playd out of posistion and done the job well. Basically ur nonsense rambling about how poor we was in the two seasons is irrevelant bcoz if u havnt noticed its a team game, lets face it rafas time had come and hodgson wasnt up to scratch. Maybe its johnson fault we havnt got a new stadium, maybe johnson influenced hicks and gillet on everythink they done ( or didnt do ). How did u even get this job haha STE THOMO LFC

  84. If his STATS are so bad and nearly everything thats bad has come through GJ why is he still a player under KK and Damien Comolli? Luca came with the stats of being a prolific goal scorer! He also featured in the our 2 worst seasons as a defensive midfielder! Instead of listening to something off tv or something that comes from a mate, actually watch him and look at the runs he makes as well as the tracking back he does. The main reason you play 3 cm in your team is so then the DM covers the full back making ground! ITS A SQUAD GAME!

  87. "Since arriving at Anfield, Liverpool have lost 24 games with Johnson in defence; have conceded 71 goals in 70 games, and failed to qualify for the CL, or mount a serious challenge for any significant trophy whatsoever. "

JK, what exactly does this have to with Johnson? Using your logic, Reina should also be sold because in the last two years he has conceded 71 goals in 70 games and we've lost 24 games. It's just doesn't make sense. If you're going to do an analysis of Johnson's specific impact on the team, then how can you use team stats to judge him. Surely you can only use his indidivual stats and then link them to the team stats. And as he is a defender you should be looking at tackles, duels, 50/50s, and then his impact going forward, not just in terms of assists and goals, but also chances created, dribbles, passing.

    This anaylsis is deeply flawed in my opinion. i would suggest doing something like this instead;

    http://www.anfieldindex.com/1832/liverpool-full-comparison-glen-johnson-martin-kelly.html

    ReplyDelete
  88. As I've explained, prior to Johnson arriving, Liverpool's defensive record was far more impressive. For example, only two league games lost all year in 2008-9, and then Johnson arrives and destabilises a successful defence. This is no coincidence, no matter how much people choose to bury their heads in the sand.

The analysis to which you link is fine for comparing two players but, ultimately, those figures are irrelevant in the context of how the team has performed.  We've still lost 24 games in two seasons with Johnson in defence; we've still conceded more goals; we've still failed to qualify for the CL twice etc.

No, it's not all Johnson's fault (!), but his defensive frailty has led to the defensive unit being less solid that it used to be, and that has caused problems.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Liverpool is not in business of cashing in. Arsenal is in that business and look how it works for them.

You are blaming Johnson for  Liverpool's worst season, I guess it's fair to blame the new guy.

Also, what was Liverpool's first choice RB before him and was he better? Arbeloa.
All that people were repeating at the time was we need someone who can move forward on full back positions.

Was he worth 18 mil.? No. Neither was Downing worth 20, and I dont see how he can live up to that price tag, but he is English and that's the way it goes.

Changing team constantly is not the key of success. Arsenal had the potential of being the best in PL if they kept their players longer.

I dont want to see Liverpool cashing in on anyone if KD doesn't find someone better for that position, in Johnson's case it means until Kelly starts to play better than him and can stay fit so he becomes KD's first choice RB.

    ReplyDelete
  90. This is absolutely ridiculous...  In a team which have been under constant pressure and sorrounded by negativity for about two seasons nobody's been performing consistently and him neither. But I think he's fab and have a lot to offer this club and I think he will get even better - especially with better players sorrounding him and with the type of football King Kenny is bringing back will suit him well... Guess you had a bad season in football manager...

    ReplyDelete
  91. But I don't see how you can just say our teams woes in those two years were partly down to  Johnson and then use that as your basis to say he had no specific impact on the team. For example Riise also moved during that time, so you could blame Auerlio and Insua and Konchesky as much as you could Johnson. Also Agger was injured a lot during that period so you could say that without him we were poorer defensivley. And last but certainly not least, we also lost Sami Hyypia during that time and he was a loss.

They are stats for individual players but what you will see is that in some areas Johson is better than Kelly and vice versa, whcih means that in terms of measurable impact Johnson provides somethings that kelly doesn't. The crux of your article is that we don't need Johnson as Kelly is a more than suitable replacement, but you've gone about it in completely the wrong way. The link between Johnon arriving and defensive frailty is tenuous at best. There are many other factors that lead to that.

In my opinion we need two good players in every positon, and in Kelly and Johnson, we have that at right back so I would keep both. For years we've talked about lack of squad depth adn right now we actually have.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Okay - please outline why he is 'fab' and how he has improved the team and the defence.

Generalisations don't cut it, especially after two seasons at the club.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Liverpool need to cash-in now because his value will continue to decrease the older he gets. Everyone knows that Johnson is defensively suspect; who in their right mind is going to pay even close to 18m to buy him from us? When he returns, he will display the same defensive deficiencies that we've already seen. He's too old to unlearn those habits now.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Also I would say that no-one is burying their head in the sand about Johnson, its just that your method of analysis is deeply flawed. You can't measure an individual's specific measureable impact using team stats as there are far too many factors involved in a team's performance. For example,  Johnson may have played very well in a game; making tackles, interceptions, keeping the winger completely quiet, winning all headers, making good forward runs, good pass completion. And then in the final few minutes Skrtel or Carragher or even Reina make a mistake which leads to a goal and we lose the game. Now would that be Johnson's fault?

    ReplyDelete
  95. just saying the defence is less solid and we've lost more games does NOT prove johnson is a defensive liabilty. can you point out any specifics where johnson was at fault? the entire team was awful for the first half of last season.

i actually prefer martin kelly, who i think will go on and be a top class player, but to suggest we unload johnson in january is daft. without without johnson, it's only kelly who's a recognised RB, and he is fairly injury prone at the moment. flanagan is too young to hold down a first team place and should be eased in. carragher can do a job at RB but we miss him when he's not in the centre and doesn't really have the pace to get up and overlap effectively. skrtel has played RB 3 times, including 2 of his worst performances in a red shirt. he's not a right back.

i think he's a good player who is comfortable on the ball. it's a falicy that he's always out of position. he doesn't choose to push on all the time, he's asked too, especially in liverpool sides of the past few years where there is little width in midfield.  it's a lazy assumption of anyone to assume his attacking qualities somehow mean he can't defend.

he also can't help his price. read interviews with benitez - he wanted johnson at any price, because he thought if we lost out to chelsea over another transfer target if would be a huge blow to the club's image as a big club. the price of a player is meaningless to his worth to the team. market forces dictate this, and you need no other evidence than to look at the crazy prices in january and the summer, many of them involving LFC.

so anyway, what specifically has johnson done so badly? what goals have come as a direct result of his ineptitude?

    ReplyDelete
  96. please outline why he isn't fab! give anything specific - the team stats don't prove anything at all. what is it about his play that means he isn't worthy of a place in the squad? what have been his failings in any goals conceded.

generalisations don't cut it! please deal in facts.
gary's link is a decent place to start -
    http://www.anfieldindex.com/1832/liverpool-full-comparison-glen-johnson-martin-kelly.html

but if you have lots of incidents where he has been defensively suspect, list them. i can think of a few, but no more than carra, gerrard and even reina.

    ReplyDelete
  97. please give examples of his defensive deficiencies and him being defensively suspect. just saying it doesn't make it true. let's deal in facts.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Seriously time to give up jaimie !

    ReplyDelete
  99. I've always been skeptical of Johnson but I think after Kenny took over, he did much better (even defensively). If we do sell him what do we do? Buy a new right back? That would stunt the development of Kelly and Flanno. A new right back would be less happy to be rotated. On the other hand, Kelly seems to injury prone to be a reliable first choice and you don't want to have to throw Flanno in the deep end. I think for now he is a good option. Unless Tottenham unearth some money, can't really see a big money deal coming from anywhere.

    P.S.
I think one of your stats is wrong 71 goals conceded in 70 games can't be a goal conceded every 1.1 games. There are more goals than games so it would take slightly less than one game (on average) to concede, not slightly more.

    P.P.S
Also, out of interest JK, I was wondering why my last comment on this site was deleted. It was one on the article about Chelsea players being supposedly greedy. 104. Football is a team effort. Ultimately, the manager or the coach takes the blame. The players, they come and go. Whether a player is good or not depends on the player's fitness and  how the player gels with the others. Some play well for one team and not so for another. This is a no brainer issue.

    ReplyDelete
  105. No, that's not what I've done at all. At no point have I said 'all the goals were his fault' I've merely illustrated - with comprisons - how the team concedes more, loses more and wins less with Johnson in the team.

People need to seriously get over it and start being objective. You might not like the figures I've provided but they are factual. Obviously, they can be interpreted in different ways, but my personal interpretation is that Glen Johnson has had a negative impact on the team.

If the opposite is true then please provide evidence to show that.

Not one person has done that yet - everyone is avoiding the issue by getting all indignant about the figures.

The best way to counteract that is to show Johnson's specific, measurable impact on the team in a positive sense.

  108. JK

Here's a link which is pretty interesting from OPTA.

    http://optasports.com/about/news/feature-the-opta-premier-league-team-of-the-season.html

Its from 2009/10, his first season at Liverpool. So while you say that criticise his "much vaunted attacking prowess" this shows that he was the most attacking fullback in the league in that season.

And here's another link which goes into a little more depth.

    http://www.eplindex.com/jose-enrique-liverpool/

Note the defensive errors statistic in particular. According to these stats provided by the OPTA, Johnson made one defensive error whereas Skrtel made 5 and Carragher 2.

  111. If you had compared Johnson to are other fullbacks over the same priod of time and they came out on top their would be grounds for me to agree with you.
But you did not provide stats based on individuals such as pass/completion, tackles/per games etc

you gone for the team as whole, which makes it differecult for us to judge him on (that is why most people are have issues with you article) you did not break it down to his individual performances.

And i pretty sure Jamie Carragher scored two own goals in that period so is Glen Johnson at thought for those.
thats why using teams stats to backup your arguement is wrong

-Does the sell club need to sell (if that dont the can demand a higher fee. e.g Downing)
-Does the buy need to sign player (we required a striker we signed Andy Carroll £35 m Newcastle didn't need to sell we need to buy)
    - More then one club bidding (Robinho to man city - Man city out bid chelsea) which  forced the price

Does not me3an he was worth the fee we over paid Downing and Caroll - which looks like a 35 m player Caroll or Suárez?

Fact is Carroll was english and Newcastle did not need to sell - thats way they were offering for sale for a 1 million less then a year before when they got relegated. we could of signed Benzema for far less.

The outlay was worth it to the club because the club were ready to spend the money

  115. If you don't identify better right back and a way to get him stop going on about selling him.
Liverpool is through with selling without replacing first and we are all happy about it.

I don't think quality RB's are offering right now and he is England international so why sell cheaper than you payed for.
Liverpool is not getting anyone else so even if KD would play Kelly, I would want him to keep Johnson as every big team needs to have options and Johnson provides it.

Liverpool is not living on sell to buy any more and you need to stop thinking about LFC like that.

    ReplyDelete
  116. Interesting.  However, there's no definition of 'successful' cross - does that mean someone actually connected with it, or he just managed to get a cross of without it hitting a defender?

In the other link - one defensive error in 27 games?  I find that hard to believe.  What is the source for the stats used in the article?  The author doesn't state it.

Also note the 'loss in possession' stat: Johnson's is the worst.

I'm not arguing that Johnson doesn't have ability - I'm arguing that despite this, he has made no real positive impact on the team.

He may score highly in the stats you've provided but what difference does it make if he only provides 2-3 actual assists each season?

And none of this changes the fact that:

    * 35% of Johnson's 70 appearances have been defeats

    * The team only wins 43% of the time with him in it.

    * The team is guaranteed to concede a goal a game with Johnson

    * The defensive record of the team has plummeted in the two years Johnson has been part of the defence.

As an analogy: You may go to war with the largest, most fearsome and best-trained army on the planet, but none of that matters if you ultimately end up losing, does it?  Once you've lost, you can't turn round afterwards and say 'but Soldier X almost captured 10 enemy positions'.  He *didn't* actually capture them, so he contributed to the loss.

  118. Jaimie, I understand where you are coming from, and aggre that for me Johnson has not produces enough to merit a price tag of £18M. However, as some has pointed out, only 2 players has really done well consistently (one being a keeper) for 1½ years before King Kenny came back. Obviously Kenny hasn't sold him so far, and I trust him to do so if an offer comes in, that he think is right for the club. Untill then Johnson has my support fully as long as Kenny picks him, and I hope he stays long term, because I do think he's really good, when playing his best. His big problem has been consistency, but with a new playing style, new guidance and most importantly (playing in) a team with confidence, Johnson could very well reach his potential.

    ReplyDelete
  119. Never understood why LFC did not hand Arbeloa a contract extension, his last season of 2008-2009 was an absolute blinder he put in some quality crosses down the right flank. Then to sell him for a little over £3m I think.....crazy!! Another miserable failing of Rafa's poor management (so glad he was sacked off BTW). Defensively would agree Glen is rather poor, much prefer up coming talent from the academy and Kelly has looked pretty solid at times as a RB even tho its not his position. Personally I would prefer to see Glen playing RM, think he would fill that role better than as a fullback!?

    ReplyDelete
  120. Not sure about some of the American expression here, e.g. Liverpool has.  Surely we write, Liverpool HAVE.

Anyway, I noticed too that there is bad weather everytime we lose a game, so surely that is the cause rather than Glen Johnson.

And as for the counter-productive transfer activity - look up the ones that got away, e.g. Stevan Jovetic.  Our former criminals, sorry owners did not see that to win things you need to invest.  It's inevitable that good players will go, not backing a manager is criminal.

Also noticeable that Agger, Lucas, Reina, Kuyt et al are still around whereas Hodgson's pathetic signings have been shipped out.

    ReplyDelete
  121. Cutting out the pros & cons of your article I think you are right, he is now surplus as was Raul, "so it is pure business" as a certain No.9 said before changing KULUBS! Remember most footballers sell to the highest bidders, lets get the highest price & bring on better quality players & definitely NOT unwanted EX Chelsea  players. Personally I do not believe he can defend to save his life, rated Arbeloa much higher who we sold for 2-3mil? & got GJ for 17mil?
We must improve the team/squad not replacing current players with lesser quality, thank god it is working for Kenny & long may it continue until we have knocked the smirk off that moaning  (ref-bashing or entertaining)   jerk called whiskey nose & have sent him & his shakes into a permanant retirement.

I have never ever commented on a forum like this, and I agree totally , said from day one , defensively a complete liability, up field at wrong times and caught out, and when he should be up field he is found still in defense, because previously in the game he has just been caught out up field, no positional sense at all ay at his age , he is never going to learn it, Kelly every day of the week for me

    ReplyDelete
  123. It was a lot of money for sure. He needs to step up this season. He's definitely got the ability and has Kelly pushing him hard. Kenny has shown he'll play Kelly, so the team is in a great position. Great competition for places. Johnson didn't set the price we paid. Not sure he really deserves such a negative article. He could be excellent this year. If not then Kelly is waiting. LFC in great place.

  124. load of rubbish

johnson is the best right back in inngerlund, he was bought by benitez who brought such outstanding players to the club as ngog, pacheco, degan, mascherano etc

leave him alone to get on with his job, yes kelly is very good, and yes flanno is also good, just don;t try and blame johnno for the negativity of benitez

    ReplyDelete
  125. Liverpool are reportedly paying Glenn Johnson £120,000 a week. he's the third most expensive right back in history. Only Danny alves and sergio ramos have cost more. He's not the 3rd best right back in the world. He's maybe the third best right back in the liverpool squad. You quite simply can't rely on him.

statistics can only begin to cover it. His concentration is poor. He's frequently standing in the wrong position. Is the wrong distance away from his opponent, hoping to use his pace to recover. Can get the offside trap wrong, and most damningly can't defend the back post very well. Think of all the goals scored against liverpool by a player coming in on his blind side, like Darren bent.

Liverpool are never going to win anything if glenn johnson is an integral part of the team.

    ReplyDelete
  126. Have to agree with Jaimie, Johnson is bloody useless. Waste of money, seems more interested in his looks than his football

    ReplyDelete
  127. Interesting statistics Jamie.

Now let's take a look at Opta Stats and their analysis algorithm, a scoring system based on more than
300 different recorded actions. What you will find is that Glen Johnson was named in the Opta 11 of outstanding performers of the 2009/10 season.

Fact: He had more successful crosses per 90mins than any other defender
Fact: He created more goalscoring chances per 90mins than any other defender in open play.
Fact: He completed more dribbles per 90mins than any other defender.

I think he can build on his defending duties under Kenny and he, along with Kelly, will be an integral part of our defence this season

    ReplyDelete
  128. Jamie, I don't think selling him would be the best idea personally unless we have a suitable experienced replacement lined up. Imagine this scenario - sell Johnson for lets say 8 million, Kelly fits straight into the team nicely but then picks up another hamstring injury which rules him out for at least 4-5 weeks, Flanno then steps up to the plate who is an alright understudy but no world beater yet and also tends to get himself into trouble at times (positioning vs sunderland). Agreed we have Skittles or even Cara as back up but personally i would prefer johnson on the right with jose on the left the team looks balanced and more of a threat going forward which in turn puts off opposition wingers pushing too far up the field. Look at the best teams around at present all of which have attacking fullbacks. Our defence seems solid at the moment whether this is due to Clark, Kenny or even just the fact that Agger is fit and playing very well only time will tell. Lets all hope we continue this very good form we are in at the moment keep all of our players free of injury and attack the league hard this season.

  131. the team stats prove nothing at all. you might has well use those stats against reina.

i asked you in one of your previous articles on johnson to come up with any specific defensive frailties and you came up with 3 examples. one wasn't his fault and in one of your examples he wasn't even playing! go back and look, it's all there.

unless you can provide anything rational giving actual facts or actually backing up opinion, it's useless arguing. it's just a case of 'i think he's good' v 'i think he's not good'. it's just opinion. the team stats are totally irrelevant as they're so vague.

my personal opinion is that i prefer kelly, but getting rid of johnson and only having flanagan as the other senior RB considering kelly's injury record would be a disaster. flanagan is one for the future, he's not up for a long stint in the first team. there's no other real option at RB apart from carra, and we are weaker in the centre when he's not there. buying a inferior replacement just to save a bit of money sends out the wrong message for a club moving forward.

  132. Mark - are you suggesting that Johnson has never made individual errors that have led to goals?! You k ow that's not true. I've provided examples in other articles, and anyone whose watched him play over the last two years knows he's a defensive liability.
And the stats are not irrelevant. The team has suffered defensively since Johnson arrived. As a comparison, if we signed a new striker and the team's win ratio/ goals scored ratio improved exponentially, the implication would be clear.

  133. Not that I rate GJ massively (I do like the player though and he was an improvement on what we had when he came in).

For a site that's aiming for factual assessment, quite a few of your facts are not really pertinent to your argument. You see quite similar approach in cosmetic adverts i.e. look at the shiny 'fact' not it's relevance to the argument.

Let me highlight, by taking the liberty of changing the scenario on some of our facts a little.

Here are a few pertinent facts:2009:  the first year after Dossena left, Liverpool had their worst league season since 1994 (In terms of league placing)Dossena's leaving coincided with the club's
worst overall season (all competitions) in decades, which included
failure to get out of the group stage of the CL; a horrible 7th place
league finish (and the consequent failure to qualify for the CL)
    As
a comparison: In the two years before Dossena left (2007-2009) the
team conceded 96 goals in 114 games, which is an average of one goal
    conceded every 0.8 games.
To put this in perspective, between 2007 and 2009, the team lost only 14 times in 114 games.
Conclusion: In the summer of 2009 we sold the mighty Andrea Dossena. This led to the total colapse of LFC defensive capbilities.

  134. i'm not suggesting that at all. i can think of a couple of times when johnson was at direct fault for a goal, but i can also think of plenty of other times when other players are at fault. he is no worse than any liverpool player in this respect.in your other articles you provided 3 examples - one he wasn't at fault for and one he wasn't even playing in the game.

the stats are completely irrelevant because there is too many variables, because it's a team game, and there could be any number of reasons that the goals conceded has risen, because you can't see who else is in the side. if you're using stats, post his opta ones up and use that as the basis of your argument. that would be more fair, as you're basing it on his ability, not the ability of unknown team mates.

saying johnson is a defensive liability is such a lazy thing to say. no one who i've spoken with can ever back it up.

  135. Totally agree I didn't understand why we bought him in the first place! arbeloa was better! But let's not live in the past! If he is to stay he should be deployed as a winger his defensive skills/reading opposition attacks/ positioning is awful
