the amount of money in the game at a particular time.  Another example could be Alonso, in 2004 a player off his quality cost £10.7 Million, by 2009 a player of that quality was worth £24.3 million.  Inflation in the real economy is not 74% (world record transfer fee increase) or 127% (Alonso fee increase).  You may as well comapre Rafa&#39;s spending with that of Don Welsh if you&#39;re  not going to take in to account the context of the prevailing market conditions.<br /><br />Were the signs there in 2004/05 of us finishing 2nd in 2008/09 with our highest points total in 22 years?  09/10 was a poor season, and a t the risk of repeating myself, some of the blame for this can be laid at Rafa&#39;s door, he made mistakes, but other factors around the club also contributed to the poor performance in 2009/10.<br /><br />As metioned (again) above 2009/10 was a bad season, but in my opinion Rafa has left us in a better state than that which he inherited and we&#39;ve had some great times over the intervening years.  I take your point that in 03/04 we did qualify for the CL, but I would argue that the league was more competitive in 09/10.  Neither season was good for us.<br /><br />Re the CL Knockoout Stage in 05/06.  We played fairly well in Lisbon only to be undone by an unfortunate late goal.  We had an off night in the home leg and were finished off by a great goal from a player we&#39;d almost signed the previous summer (Simao) only for the deal to collapse due to &#39;administrative&#39; You make a fair point about certain managers not have experience. Although I would question your comment on Ferguson coming from the SPL which at that time were a far better standard than now as he proved in winning a European trophy. My reaction was not hysterical at all - you put it that way because you can&#39;t understand how people can feel outraged by such a ridiculous act.<br /><br />Benitez deserves credit for the 2005 CL, but i the context of his reign, it was a very lucky win.  The FA Cup win a year later back sup this view - it was also a lucky win, and like Istanbul, it took penalties to win it.<br /><br />What has the world record transfer fee int he respective eras of Houllier and Benitez got to di with anything?  46m adjusted for inflation is a lot more money today than it was back then. The fact is, Benitez has had much more money to spend than Houllier. <br /><br />09/10 was a season that was always going to happen under Benitez.  The warning signs were there in the 2004-5 league season (which was terrible).  All of Benitez&#39;s flaws as a manager came home to roost and Liverpool suffered as a result. <br /><br />Re your comparison with 2003-4 - we might have won more games and scored more goals  but none of that matters.
