Inside Info: 'Source' claims 'incredible' Liverpool star will quit Anfield this summer

Reds midfielder Kevin Stewart is currently on the sidelines recovering from season-ending surgery, and new reports today suggest that the combative midfielder may have played his last game for the club.

According to Sky Sports today:

"Liverpool midfielder Kevin Stewart is set to leave in the summer, Sky Sports News understands. Sky sources claim a number of Premier League clubs are interested in taking him on a permanent deal".

This is bad news for Stewart, but the brutal reality is that it won't make a blind bit of difference to Liverpool.

Stewart hasn't featured in the Premier League since his one-minute cameo against Chelsea in September, and he last made the matchday squad in February.

Klopp has sanctioned two contract extensions in the last year for Stewart, which means he must rate him highly, but if that's the case, why has the manager constantly ignored him?

There is, of course, another possibility. New contracts are often used to ensure that a decent transfer fee is received when a player moves on, and it's possible Liverpool employed that strategy with Stewart.

After all, it's hard to see how he's going to get regular game time over the next year, and Klopp has already shown that he's not averse to selling the club's young players (Jordon Ibe, for example).

With Liverpool set to strengthen in midfield yet again this summer, Stewart is clearly surplus to requirements, so the time is probably right for him to move on. Sadly, Stewart is just another player to fall foul of the Academy curse. Academy grads very rarely become first-team regulars, and like so many others, Stewart is heading for the Anfield scrapheap.
