Shock Transfer: Liverpool make surprise offer for 'world-class' €60m Real Madrid superstar. Marquee signing?

Liverpool are expected to sign at least one new striker this summer, and new reports today suggest that Jurgen Klopp is planning a hugely ambitious move for one of Europe's most elite strikers.

According to Spanish newspaper Don Balon today:

"Karim Benzema has five serious offers on the table, including bids from Arsenal and Liverpool"

Liverpool have been linked with Benzema many times in the past, and the most recent link came December 2015, when The Telegraph reported:

"Liverpool are ready to make a £50 million bid for Karim Benzema, [who is] happy to leave the Bernabéu"

At the time, Spanish football pundit Guillem Balague emphatically dismissed the possibility of Benzema signing for Liverpool:

"There is no way Benzema would go to Liverpool. It is impossible. He is essential to Real and a favourite of Florentino Perez.”

Benzema - who, according to ex-Reds boss Gerard Houllier, is 'world-class' - remains a regular starter at Madrid, but at the age of 29, he's entering the twilight of his career, and recent reports in Spain suggest that Real are willing to sell for '€50m-€60m'.

Benzema is the epitome of a marquee signing, but I can't see Liverpool sealing this deal. Irrespective of this season's performance (which, despite being third, remains patchy), Benzema will probably see the Reds as a big step down, and there are other clubs in the Premier League more willing match (or exceed) his €150k-a-week salary.

Plus, Benzema simply isn't a Klopp-type player. His languid style doesn't fit Liverpool's high intensity 'heavy metal football', and unlike most of the Reds' players, Benzema is not placid, pliable, and/or subservient; he has a mind of his own, and in my view, Klopp will not allow a player like that to threaten his paternalistic hold on the squad.
