Season Over? After Palace fiasco, Klopp confirms 'fantastic' £30m Liverpool star is 'injured'

After playing 30 minutes of football in the last two weeks, Liverpool part-timer Daniel Sturridge missed several training sessions this week, and then failed to make the bench for today's home defeat to Crystal Palace. His absence suggests that he's injured again, and Klopp has now officially confirmed this.

When asked after the game why Sturridge missed today's game, Klopp offered the following one word response:

"Injured".

According to the Liverpool Echo:

"Sturridge suffered a recurrence of his hip injury...the complaint which saw him miss playing time in February and March".

I doubt Sturridge will ever play for Liverpool again. A once promising LFC career is now ending with a whimper, and given his endless injury worries, Liverpool may struggle to get £20m this summer.

I doubt Klopp will be losing any sleep about Sturridge's inevitable exit, though; he clearly doesn't rate the guy, and the brutal truth is that Liverpool no longer miss him.

For the most part, scoring goals is not the issue this year. As today's shambles starkly illustrated yet again, defensive solidity is Klopp's biggest problem, and it's no exaggeration to suggest that Liverpool's entire defensive unit needs a significant overhaul this summer.

As for Sturridge - I genuinely believe that his career as a top-flight striker is finished. He'll stick it out for a another 4-5 years, but he'll never again reach the heights of the 2013-14 season. Like Fernando Torres, he's done.

^ Sturridge: £30m-rated. Dec 2016: Hailed as 'fantastic' by Lee Dixon.
