Anfield Stunner: Messi speaks to Barca about transfer for 'amazing' £70m Liverpool star; demands deal is dropped

Over the last year, Brazil maestro Neymar has repeatedly called for Barcelona to sign Liverpool's Philippe Coutinho, and although a transfer to the Nou Camp seems inevitable this summer, Barca's biggest star is reportedly against the deal.

According to Diario Gol this week:

* Neymar wants best friend Coutinho a Barca, and is pushing the Catalan club to seal the deal.

* Messi is opposed to the deal, as it would grant Neymar more power at the Nou Camp, and he has allegedly asked Barca to drop the pursuit of Coutinho.

Examples of Barcelona players (past and present) quasi-tapping up Coutinho:

* Neymar [Sep 2015]: "I see many Brazilian players with quality, but one that I think could play here is Coutinho. He has the style of Barcelona."

* Neymar [Oct 2016]: "Playing with Coutinho is always a joy. We’ve been mates for years. We’re made to play with each other".

* Neymar [Nov 2016]: "Coutinho is a great player, I'd like to play with him at Barça".

* Xavi [Nov 2016]: "Technicallyhe [Coutinho] is very good, and he would suit Barcelona's philosophy."

* Ronaldinho [May 2015]: "I know what Barcelona look for and he [Coutinho] has those qualities. Barca and Coutinho are the perfect fit".

* Rivaldo [Jan 2017]: "This transfer would be a good thing for Barcelona. He [Coutinho] would help Barcelona".

Despite being the world's best player, Messi appears to be monumentally insecure, self-absorbed, and irredeemably petty. Who knew? Of course, this story is in all likelihood BS (or, at the very least, exaggerated), but even if Barca pull out of the deal, Coutinho is bound to have four or five top clubs after him this summer.

* Coutinho: Liverpool reportedly willing to sell for £70m. Hailed as 'amazing' by Joel Matip.
