Anfield-bound? Liverpool keen to sign 'fantastic' £25m Man Utd reject who impressed Klopp

Arsenal legend Ian Wright recently urged Liverpool to sign 'fantastic' Burnley star Michael Keane, and new reports this week suggest that the coveted defender is on Jurgen Klopp's radar for the upcoming summer transfer window.

When asked last week who Liverpool should sign this summer, Wright told BBC Radio Five Live:

“Michael Keane. He looks like a very good defender".

According to the Liverpool Echo:

"[After] being impressed by his displays for Burnley, Jurgen Klopp wants to sign Michael Keane.

Some info about Keane:

* 24-year old central defender, who can also play at right-back. Contract expires: 2018

* Spent four years at Manchester United (2011-2015)

* Burnley: 102 apps (12 goals/assists). Won the Championship title in 2016.

* Dec 2016: Rejected Burnley's new contract offer.

* Jan 2017: When asked about transfer rumours, Keane told reporters: “I don’t let it affect me. I’m really happy at Burnley, but it is flattering to see.”

* Mar 2017: On Rio Ferdinand: "He's been brilliant. Before big games he'll send me a text with a bit of advice. He's a legend, and someone I can learn a lot from".

Historically, Liverpool usually buy in first-team centre-backs (as opposed to promoting from the Academy), and the optimum age to go straight into the first team is 23-25 (see: Agger, Skrtel, Hyypia, Henchoz, Lovren, Matip etc).

At 24, Keane is the perfect age for a move to Liverpool, but the biggest plus is that he is yet to suffer a major injury, which - given the regular injuries to Matip and Lovren - is an important factor.

Everton, Chelsea, and Man City are also reportedly interested, and given the fact he's a Brit, Keane's transfer fee is likely to be exorbitant. After all, Man City paid a ridiculous £47.5m for John Stones (another English central defender in his early 20s), and Burnley will probably seek a similar fee.

Skybet currently have Liverpool as 2nd favourites to sign Keane this summer.
