Deal Close? Klopp confirms he's 'in contact' with 'extraordinary' £20m attacker. Talks held already

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that he is in contact with one of Liverpool's current transfer targets.

Liverpool were endlessly linked with Mario Gotze during Klopp's debut season at Anfield, last month, The Mirror claimed:

"Liverpool are lining up a summer move for Mario Gotze. Jurgen Klopp wants a reunion with the attacker, and talks about an end-of-season switch have taken place".

At the height the Liverpool transfer speculation last season, Gotze confirmed that he still 'texts' Klopp, and when asked today about the player he signed for Dortmund, Klopp confirmed:

"Yes, we're in touch. We have exchanged messages. I'm in contact with a lot of my former players".

Clearly, Klopp and Gotze have a close personal relationship, and in my view, it's naive to think that Klopp isn't interested in a player he described last year as having 'extraordinary abilities'.

Well, there's nothing 'extraordinary' about Gotze's form over the last two seasons. Due to (what I perceive to be) a weak mentality, £20m-rated Gotze is in decline, and he currently averages a goal/assist every 295 minutes.

That said, I fully expect Gotze to end up at Liverpool. Like Rodgers and his saviour complex with Mario Balotelli, Klopp probably feels he can resurrect Gotze's career, and get him back to his pre-Bayern Munich level.

On the plus side, given his slide into mediocrity, Gotze's value has also plummeted, which may allow Liverpool to get him on the cheap, and if Klopp can actually get him firing again, it could be a shrewd bit of business.
