Shock Transfer: Thommo urges Liverpool to sign 'magnificent' £38m sensation; Carra/Hamann also want deal

Anfield legend Phil Thompson has revealed the player at the top of his Liverpool transfer wishlist.

Speaking to Sky Sports on Monday, Thommo enthused:

"I would have the Ross Barkley...and I think most of the teams would want that. I would take him [at Liverpool]."

Barkley - who was linked with an improbable £38m transfer to Liverpool back in 2014 - is highly-rated by a number of ex-Reds.

* Dietmar Hamann: "I'd carry [Ross] Barkley from Goodison to Anfield if Liverpool could have him"

* Jamie Redknapp: "He [Barkley] is magnificent. We’ve not had a player since Gazza who can run the length of the pitch with the ball without ever looking under pressure".

* Mark Lawrenson: "He is pure gold. Whether he is still at Goodison or moves on, he should develop into a massive midfield presence"

* Jamie Carragher: “Enough of Gerrard now, he's leaving. His replacement has to be Ross Barkley"

Arsenal legend Martin Keown has also suggested that Barkley is a player Liverpool should pursue:

"[Ross] Barkley is the perfect replacement for [Steven] Gerrard. He has all the potential to be the leading player of his generation".

I think it's fair to say that this particular transfer is never going to happen. Barkley is obviously talented, but he also is yet another grossly overrated (and inconsistent) British player (look at Redknapp's comparison to Gazza), and it's debatable whether he'll actually achieve his full potential.
