Aldo Insists: Liverpool 'need' a mega-signing like 'world-class' €70m Everton star. Agree?

Liverpool legend John Aldridge has urged Jurgen Klopp to prioritise the signing of an 'out-and-out goalscorer' this summer.

In his column for the Liverpool Echo today, Aldo slammed the Reds' 'unacceptable' form, and insisted that Klopp needs to 'splash the cash' this summer:

"Romelu Lukaku doesn’t give you a lot outside the box but he’s scored 16 goals. That’s exactly what we need. When we had four players all scoring it was great but you need your match-winner up front".

I feel like I'm repeating myself for the umpteenth time here, but what the hell: it was *obvious* last season that Liverpool needed to buy a new top-class striker for the 2016-17 campaign, which is why I (and many other LFC fans) argued repeatedly for Klopp to sign someone over the summer. A strike force of Sturridge, Origi, and Ings just isn't going to cut, and the reasons were blindingly obvious:

* Sturridge: Phenomenal goalscorer, but injury ravaged, and cannot be relied upon across a whole season.

* Origi: Not prolific enough, and doesn't have the game intelligence to be Liverpool's no. 1 striker.

* Ings: Are you kidding me? A typical huff-and-puff British player with neither the guile or the prolificity to succeed at a top club. Would Ings be a regular at Man Utd, City, Chelsea, or Spurs? No chance.

The same principle applies to players like Mignolet and Lallana: they will have periods of good form, but it is folly to rely on them across a whole season. Again, this was obvious last year, but Klopp ignored it, and decided to put his faith in these players. His reward?

* Lallana: Has gone missing, and contributed a measly 1 goal in 11 games (plus, his barren run has coincided with Liverpool's nightmare January).

* Mignolet: Back to making costly mistakes. Two in two games now.

Liverpool's squad needs major surgery this summer, and a new striker should be at the top of the priority list.

* Lukaku: €70m-rated
