Contact Made: Boss confirms transfer talks with Liverpool about 'unbelievable' £80k-a-week Brazilian

Will Liverpool utility man Lucas Leiva leave Anfield this summer?

Over the last two years, Lucas has been constantly linked with transfers away, and in January, the Brazilian reportedly came close to leaving, with Sky Sports Italia claiming that he 'passed a medical' with Inter Milan.

Now, Lucas's career may be about to come full-circle. The President of Gremio - the team from which Rafa Benitez signed Lucas - has revealed that the Brazilian club is actively trying to seal a deal with Liverpool. Speaking to reporters this week, Romildo Bolzan confirmed:

“Lucas Leiva is a player who is in the fans’ imagination. He is a player that would be important to bring. We made an approach, but the conditions are very difficult."

I doubt Lucas will want to take such a big step backwards at this stage of his career. He only just turned 30, which, nowadays, is nowhere near the end for players who take care of themselves off the pitch (as Lucas does). Lucas stated as much last month, when he told reporters:

"I'm not close to retiring and have many years ahead of me. To not play much...is not something I want for my future especially at this time of my career".

Over the last ten years, Lucas has moved from attacking midfield (the position he first played under Rafa Benitez) to defensive midfield, and now into central defence. If the natural regression continues, there's only one place left to go...

Mignolet beware?
