Redknapp raves: 'Unplayable' £57m striker Liverpool tried to sign is like 'Luis Suarez'

Jamie Redknapp has compared one of the Premier League's most controversial players with ex-Red Luis Suarez.

In his weekend column for the Daily Mail, Redknapp claimed that Costa is the Premier League's current 'Player of the Year', and suggested that the Brazilian can win the award despite alienating fellow pros. He explained:

"Costa polarises opinion as much as Luis Suarez, who won Player of the Year in 2013-14 after a ban for biting. There are suggestions that Costa is unmanageable, but at his best he is unplayable".

Fans of rival teams rubbed their hands with collective glee last week over Costa's alleged meltdown last week, and hoped that his rancorous relationship with Antonio Conte might lead to the (self) destruction of Chelsea's title bid. Alas, it hasn't worked out that way, and Costa returned to the fold on Sunday with yet another goal, which now makes him the Prem's top scorer.

Chelsea's victory over Hull City has also put Conte's team 10 points ahead of Liverpool, which surely means curtains for the Reds' nascent title bid.

As for Costa being the 'Player of the Season' - if his goals drive Chelsea to the title, then he'll deserve it, but right now, Alexis Sanchez is - IMO - equally deserving of the award. The £57m-rated Chilean has 30 goals/assists already this season, and it's only January.

That is a Suarez-esque creative return, and it should be noted that the Uruguayan won the 'Player of the Year' award whilst playing in a team that failed to win the league.

My vote goes to Sanchez.
