Confirmed: 'Incredible' £27m Man Utd star 'spoke' with Liverpool '3 times' about transfer to Anfield.

One of Manchester United's key players publicly confirmed that he rejected a move to Liverpool.

It's an open secret that Liverpool were desperate to sign Henrik Mkhitaryan during Brendan Rodgers' reign, and the Armenian attacker how now confirmed that he held talks with LFC. Speaking to the Daily Mail, Mkhitaryan mused:

"I spoke two or three times on the phone to [Liverpool manager] Brendan Rodgers, he was saying he really wanted me. Half of me thought I had to go there, the other half was not so confident".

Mkhitaryan - who cost Man Utd £27m over the summer - then went on toe explain why he rejected a move to Anfield:

"Two weeks later, Jurgen Klopp broke off his holiday to come and see me in Dortmund, and after we met, I felt more comfortable to sign for Dortmund. I think I made the right decision."

The message here is obvious: players appreciate it when a manager goes the extra mile to make them feel wanted. In this case, Rodgers tried to tie up a deal over the phone, but Klopp took decisive action, and flew out to meet Mkhitaryan in person.

Clearly, this made all the difference. If Rodgers had flown out to convince Mkhitaryan to sign for Reds, then the Armenian might be playing for Liverpool right now, and not Man Utd.
