Deal Close? Legend claims 'superb' £40m star 'will be a huge signing for Liverpool'

Another day, another ex-player calling for Liverpool to sign the Premier League's standout defender.

Speaking to Sky Sports this week, West Ham legend Tony Cottee insisted that Liverpool must sign 'superb' Southampton star Virgil Van Dijk. He explained:

“Van Dijk - if they can get him - will be a huge signing for Liverpool. If you’re going to play a pressing game and push forward, he [Klopp] needs reliable defenders".

In recent weeks, ex-Reds Jan Molby, Jamie Redknapp, and Jamie Carragher have also called for Liverpool to sign Van Dijk:

* Molby: "I think he’s a super player, and Liverpool should show an interest. If you look at how [Liverpool] play they could do with Virgil van Dijk and they will all be interested".

* Redknapp: "Van Dijk is immense. He gets better and better. Whoever decides to buy him, he is a fantastic player. There's not a better centre-back in the Premier League."

* Carra: "Matip has fitness issues, as does Lovren. If Klopp wants someone in January, he has to be backed, as the stakes could get very big for Liverpool in 2017. I still think he needs a defender".

I maintain that £40m-training Van Dijk is not a transfer priority right now, but if Liverpool get into Europe next season, the team will definitely need another top-class central defender, especially with both Matip and Lovren prone to regular niggling injuries.

Bringing Van Dijk in now will give him 7+ months to acclimatise to life at Anfield, which can only be a good thing. Should Liverpool pursue Van Dijk (or another central defender) in January?
