Anfield MegaDeal: Legend claims Liverpool must pay '£50m' to sign 'superb' international powerhouse. Worth it?

How much is Liverpool target Virgil Van Dijk worth in the transfer market?

According to Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier, Liverpool will have to pay through the nose for the 'superb' Dutch defender.

Speaking to the Daily Record on Saturday, Le Tissier directly referenced Liverpool's interest, and insisted:

"It would take £40-50m to get Virgil van Dijk [who] is probably the best centre-back in the Premier League. Hopefully, we don’t lose him in January".

Arsenal legend Paul Merson has a similar viewpoint:

"If Liverpool can buy Van Dijk for £50 million in January, they will take some beating.”

Liverpool's defence took a serious beating today, and after conceding four goals in 45 minutes today at Bournemouth, there are sure to be renewed called for defensive reinforcements in January.

Van Dijk is obviously an enticing option, but bringing him in doesn't guarantee - as Merson suggests - that Liverpool will win the title.

Yesterday, for example, Southampton conceded three goals with Van Dijk at the heart of their defence, so clearly, the Dutchman's mere presence doesn't guarantee solidity.

Do Liverpool need a new central defender, and is Van Dijk the answer?
