Surprise Deal? Klopp responds to transfer rumours over 'superb' €28m star; confirms 'winter' deal is unlikely

Jurgen Klopp has responded to rumours linking Barcelona with a move for 'superb' Liverpool star Nathaniel Clyne.

On Friday, the Daily Express claimed:

"Barcelona are considering a move for Nathaniel Clyne...and Express Sport understands that Clyne has been discussed as a potential new arrival at the Nou Camp".

When asked over the weekend about Barcelona's interest, Klopp told reporters:

"It's a really good sign...that they talk about Barcelona. Do they think they can buy Clyney in winter? Come on. It’s nice but not important".

In my view, Clyne is replaceable, but Liverpool just don't have a quality, experienced back-up in the squad, which is the principal reason this transfer is a non-starter.

Even if Barcelona offered a massively inflated transfer fee, there's little chance of Klopp finding a top-class replacement in January.

With European football looking like a distinct possibility next season, Liverpool need more quality full-back options, and - like Moreno with Milner - Clyne needs a viable challenger for his position in the team.

Right now, Clyne has zero competition for his place, and that is hardly the ideal sitution.
