Transfer Update: 'Excellent' €7m midfield sensation explains why he 'chose to join Liverpool'

Liverpool fans are expecting big things from Marko Grujic over the next few years, but in the meantime, Grujic is focusing on settling into the club, the 'family' nature of which is one of the things that convinced the 'excellent' Serb to sign a long-term deal with LFC.

In an interview for the official Liverpool website this week, Grujic revealed what attracted him to Anfield:

“Red Star is a very, very big club, like Liverpool, but both clubs are like family, and that’s why I chose to join Liverpool. There is the same...incredible harmony between fans and players.”

At the age of 20, Grujic already has a couple of impressive achievements to his name:

* 2015: Winner of the U20 World Cup with Serbia.

* 2016: League title winner with Red Star Belgrade.

Grujic seems to be happy at Liverpool, but he must surely feel a tinge of sadness over his hometown club's Euro capitulation this summer. After winning the league, Red Star got knocked out of the Champions League in the 3rd qualifying round, and then lost a Europa League play-off with Sassuolo, which means - like Liverpool - Red Star will not compete in European competition this season.

If Grujic had stayed in Belgrade for another year, perhaps he might've made the difference during Red Star's European qualifying campaign?

In my view, Grujic should've continued his development in Belgrade for one more year. The level might be lower, but for young players, nothing is more than regular, competitive football, and at Anfield, Grujic is likely to spend much of the season on the bench.
