'New Maldini' to Anfield? Liverpool keen to sign 'excellent' £16m international. Offer expected soon

The Alberto Moreno horror show continues, and after another shaky performance against Roma, the need for a new left-back remains a matter of urgency. In recent weeks, PSV Eindhoven star Jetro Willems has emerged as a possible transfer target, but Jurgen Klopp reportedly has his eye on another possible solution.

According to The Telegraph:

"Jurgen Klopp is preparing a bid [for] Mattia De Sciglio. It's unlikely the Rossoneri will accept any bid less than £16m".

Some info about De Sciglio, who is nicknamed the 'New Maldini':

* 23-year old right back (52% of games for Milan) who can also left-back (41% of games), and left midfield. Current contract expires: 2018.

* Milan: 106 apps (3 assists, no goals). 26 apps for the Italy national team.

* Oct 2013: Milan legend Paolo Maldini enthused: "I love watching Mattia play. He's lacking a bit of killer instinct with the ball at feet and needs to fill out a bit, but he's better than I was at his age".

* Dec 2015: Ex-Milan boss Sinisa Mihailovic's assessment: "He [De Sciglio] has a reserved character, but he's an excellent player and a very good guy. He can still grow, and it is normal to expect more from those who have these qualities. "

* Scouting Report (Strengths): "Rarely gives the ball away. Exceptional ability to read the game. Rarely slides into tackles, and his ambidexterity also makes him comfortable enough to lead into them with either foot".

* Scouting Report (Weaknesses): "Predictability in attack. Often just waiting for the ball instead of making proactive decisions. One-dimensional going forward and that makes him relatively easy to close down".

A left-back who's better at defending than attacking and 'rarely slides into tackles'? I'll take it, though if he can remain fit, Willems - with his stunning creative stats - is arguably the better option.
