Not Again: Klopp reveals bad news about 'excellent' £50k-a-week Liverpool star; confirms 'problems' ongoing

Over the last couple of years, injury has persistently plagued Liverpool's central defenders, and with new season only weeks away, the club's injury curse has seemingly struck once again.

Just three games into his Liverpool career, 'excellent'new signing Joel Matip is already injured.

The Cameroon international picked up a knock against Wigan today, but is it serious. Reds boss Jurgen Klopp doesn't seem to think so. Speaking to reporters at his post-Wigan press conference, he noted:

“I hope it’s only a minor problem. He said he’s had it one or two times already. It’s the foot he had problems with in the past. He had a little bit of pain when pre-season started because of the intensity. It’s not too serious, hopefully".

If Matip has experienced 'pain' since pre-season 'started' it means he's been playing with this issue for a few weeks now, and it looks like it's finally come to a head.

If - as Klopp suggests - 'intensity' is the exacerbating factor, then Matip clearly needs to recover properly and focus his time on building up the strength/resistance in his foot.

The intensity of the Premier League is on a different level, and if Matip can't make it through pre-season without injury, he'll probably struggled when the real football begins.

For me, there's a little too much reliance on 'hope' in Klopp's comments; it sounds like Matip's injury is a bit of an unknown quantity, and that's never a good thing.

With Sakho and Gomez already injured, perhaps it's actually a good thing that Liverpool are in the market for another central defender. That said, the decision to let Kolo Toure leave is looking more and more foolish with each passing day.
