Anfield Nightmare: 'Excellent' £60k-a-week Liverpool star flies out to have surgery after injury blow

Liverpool's injury curse strikes again! With the new season just over two weeks away, new signing Loris Karius^ has picked up an injury that will keep him out of the club's first few games.

According to The Guardian:

"Loris Karius has been ruled out for two months after breaking his hand. He flew home from the USA on Friday and will have surgery on the broken hand".

Obviously, this means that Simon Mignolet will start the season as Liverpool's number one, and whilst that's an unappealing option, it's not the end of the world.

Mignolet may be prone to mistakes, but he is an experienced 'keeper, and he'll know that any further mistakes will almost certainly consign him to number-two status as soon as Karius returns. As such, he'll be under pressure to perform well, which may work in the club's favour.

On a related note: Mignolet has to be the luckiest goalkeeper in the Premier League and/or he's engaging in some kind of football-related voodoo to ensure he retains his place in the team. Let's look at the facts:

* Dec 14th 2014: Brendan Rodgers drops Mignolet 'indefinitely' after a series of poor performances. Brad Jones comes in to replace him.

* Dec 26th 2014: Brad Jones gets injured, and Mignolet returns to the starting line-up.

* May 24th 2016: Liverpool sign Karius, who proceeds to start 5 pre-season games in a row, and looks nailed-on to usurp Mignolet as Reds' first-choice.

* Jul 28th 2016: Karius breaks his hand, and is ruled out for two months. Mignolet retains his place as first-choice goalkeeper.

I suspect foul play ;-)

^ ^ Described as 'excellent' by Mainz captain Julian Baumgartlinger. Reportedly on £60k-a-week.
