Transfer Boost: Liverpool favourites to sign potentially 'world-class' £22m attacker who's 'better than Bale'

With Christian Benteke seemingly on the outs at Anfield, there may be a vacancy for a striker this summer, and new reports this weekend suggest that Liverpool are back in the race for Lyon star Alexander Lacazatte.

Last summer, Liverpool were heavily linked with a move for Lacazette, and at one point, the Reds were reportedly favourites to sign the prolific striker. Now, according to The Mirror:

"Liverpool will lead the chase for French striker Alexandre Lacazette this summer. He is expected to cost £22m".

Lacazette appears to ready for a transfer, and in a recent interview with, he admitted:

"A departure? Yes. I'm focused [on this season] and perhaps after that, I will leave. It is possible to go in the Premier League and Lyon is also aware".

Lyon President Jean Michel Aulas claimed last season that Lacazette is 'better than Bale', but his productivity has tailed off badly this season:

* Last Season: 40 goals/assists in 40 apps (One every 87 mins)

* This Season: 18 goals/assists in 37 apps (One every 173 mins)

Ex-Reds boss Gerard Houllier has no doubts about Lacazette, though and he's convinced that his compatriot can be a success in the Premier League:

"He [Lacazette] can be world-class. He’s a very dedicated professional, so if he looks after himself he can become really top notch.”

There is a plus side to Lacazette's drop in form this season: it may lower his transfer value, and if Liverpool can sign him for £15m-£20m, then given his speed, mobility, and finishing ability, it'd (arguably) represent good business.
