Anfield Nightmare: 'Brilliant' £55k-a-week Liverpool star on crutches after injury blow. Season Over?

With recent injuries to Jordan Henderson and Christian Benteke, Liverpool's injury list is expanding yet again, and it looks like Reds midfielder Emre Can is set to join his injured colleagues on the treatment table.

Can went off injured during the latter stages of Thursday's fantastic 4-3 Europa League victory over Borussia Dortmund, and after the game, the German midfielder left the stadium on crutches.

Can also had a protective boot on his right foot, which suggests one of the following:

* Severe bruising

* Tendon damage.

* Ligament strain or tear.

* Ankle ligament issue

* A bone fracture.

The protective boot may just precautionary, but if not, Can - hailed by James Milner this week as 'brilliant' - could end up missing the rest of the season (especially if the injury turns out to be a fracture and/or ligament related).

Luckily, with Allen, Lucas, Milner, Stewart, and Brannagan, Liverpool have ample cover in Can's position, and as the recent 4-1 demolition of Stoke showed, the Reds are more than capable of coping without him.

If Can^ is out for an extended period, it represents a great opportunity for Joe Allen to get a few more starts under his belt. With his fine form over the last few months, Allen deserves the chance to stake his claim, for both a regular starting place, and a new contract.

^ Reportedly on £55k-a-week
