Double Transfer? Liverpool 'still interested' in signing 'miracle' £37m attacker and £15m midfield powerhouse

In reports over the last month are to be believed, Mario Gotze and Piotr Zielinski are Jurgen Klopp's top transfer targets this summer, and BBC journalist Ben Smith has fanned the flames of speculation this week with his contention that Liverpool are indeed tracking the £52m-rated duo.

On Sunday, Smith tweeted:

"Liverpool are still interested in [Mario] Götze, Udinese's [Piotr] Zielinski".

Gotze

Liverpool have been constantly linked with Bayern Munich's 'miracle boy' over the last six months, and the in an interview last week with ZDF TV, Gotze revealed that he still maintains a personal relationship with Klopp:

"We [he and Klopp] text now and again. He was my coach at BVB. It [a move away] hinges on many factors. Everything else will show in the future”

Zielinski

Last month, The Telegraph reported that Liverpool tried to sign Zieliński in January. Soon after, the Daily Mail claimed:

"Liverpool [will] hold talks next week over the signing of Piotr Zielinski. Scouts have continued to monitor his progress".

Within the context of Klopp's transfer history, both deals make logical sense:

* Klopp brought Gotze through Dortmund's youth system, and then made him the focal point of BVB's title-winning attack.

* Zielinski is cheap, low profile, and comparatively unknown, which seemed to be Klopp's transfer MO at BVB.

If Liverpool sign both players, here is how the club's first XI could look next season (using current squad members):

-------------- Mignolet
Flanagan - Lovren - Matip ---- Clyne
---------- Grujic -- Zielinski
---- Firmino --- Gotze ---- Coutinho
-------------- Sturridge

Gotze has the potential to be a significant upgrade on Lallana, but right now - front-four aside - the rest of the team doesn't look that inspiring.

* Gotze: £37m-rated. Zielinski: £15m-rated. Combined total - £52m.
