Massive Boost: 'World-class' £35m goal-machine Liverpool tried to sign confirms transfer is 'possible'

Last summer, Liverpool were heavily linked with a move for Lyon star Alexander Lacazette, and at one point, the Reds were reportedly favourites to sign the prolific striker. It's all gone quiet on the transfer front this year, but in a new interview, Lacazette has reiterated once again that he's interested in a move to the Premier League. Possible target for LFC?

When asked recently about his future, Lacazette told Le10Sport:

"A departure? Yes, I think about the Premier League. I'm very focused [on this season] and perhaps after that, I will leave. I know it is possible to go in the Premier League and Lyon is also aware".

Ex-Reds boss Gerard Houllier is convinced that £35m-rated Lacazette can be a success in the Premier League, and last season, he enthused:

"He [Lacazette] can be world class. He’s a very dedicated professional, so if he looks after himself he can become really top notch.”

Reds legend Steve Nicol is also a fan of Lacazette, and in an interview last season with ESPN, he insisted that Lacazette 'fits the mould that Liverpool are looking for', and strongly urged his old club to pursue the striker:

“Liverpool have an opportunity to sign this guy [Lacazette] and I think they should. He loves to go forward [and] score goals and he reminds me of [Luis] Suarez. I think this would be a superb signing".

Last season, Lacazette contributed 40 goals/assists in 40 games for Lyon, which explains Nicol's enthusiasm. However, with only 17 goals/assists 36 games this year, Lacazette has failed to replicate his form, which suggests he may be a one season wonder (in the sense that he has one amazing season in his career and then never reaches the same heights).

As for Houllier's contention that Lacazette 'can be world-class' - it's all pie in the sky until he consistently performs at all three levels of football: domestic, European, and world.

There is a plus side to Lacazette's drop in form this season: it may lower his transfer value, and his Liverpool can sign him for £15m-£20m, then given his speed, mobility, and finishing ability, it'd (arguably) represent good business.

Lacazette is clearly desperate for a move to the Premier League: should Liverpool make a move this summer?
