Anfield Update: €13m assist-king admired by Klopp rejects Liverpool transfer to sign for Euro Giants

If Liverpool fans are to be believed, Jurgen Klopp has infinitely greater pulling power in the transfer market than ex-boss Brendan Rodgers, but new reports today suggest that Klopp has failed the first test of his ability to attract quality players to Anfield.

In the summer of 2014, the agent of Fenerbahce star Caner Erkin confirmed that Liverpool were 'interested' in a deal, and earlier this month, Turkish newspaper Fotomac claimed that Liverpool are planning to submit an offer for Erkin 'at the end of the season'.

Well, it appears that Klopp's fabled pulling-power has fallen on stony ground. According to TalkSport:

"Caner Erkin is set to snub interest from Liverpool and join Inter Milan. Liverpool have regularly scouted Erkin and Jurgen Klopp is a big admirer, but the Reds have fallen short".

As noted above, it's a fact that Liverpool held an interest in Erkin, but in this case, it's entirely possible that Liverpool never entered the race. However, if the story is true, then it's (arguably) a blow for the Reds.

€13m-rated Erkin has a prodigious creative record (one goal/assist every 223 minutes), which is superb for a left-back. As a comparison, consider comparative results for some of Liverpool's players:

* Moreno: 6 goals/assists in 80 games (One every 1067 mins)

* Clyne: 3 goals/assists in 41 games (One every 1167 mins)

* Flanagan: 5 goals/assists in 46 games (One every 727 mins)

* Lallana: 22 goal/assists in 77 games (One every 250 mins)

* Hendo: 56 goals/assists in 208 games (One every 288 mins)

* Can: 5 goals/assists in 81 games (One every 1308 mins).

It's pitiful, really. What kind of a (football) world do we live in when a *defender* has a superior minutes-per-goal/assist ratio than £56m-worth of LFC midfielders? Obviously, a left-back's primary role is to defend, but Erkin has a long history of consistently over-achieving in attack, and that could've been beneficial.

Another one bites the dust.
