Molby raves: 'Mesmerising' £18m attacker Liverpool tried to sign has 'unbelievable talent' and 'vision'

In November, Reds legend Jamie Carragher hailed Dimitri Payet as the 'signing of the season', and ahead of Liverpool's FA Cup clash with West Ham on Saturday, fellow Reds icon Jan Molby has also revealed his admiration for Payet.

In his column for the Liverpool Echo today, Molby described Payet as 'mesmerising', and warned the Reds to watch out for his potentially game-changing skills:

"What an unbelievable talent he [Payet] is. How West Ham managed to sign him is beyond me. If he's even close to being on song, then he's worth the entrance fee alone. Touch, speed, vision, goals and awareness; he's a top player".

Payet - who cost West Ham £11m - was linked with a move to Anfield during Roy Hodgson's reign, and at the time, the Daily Mail reported:

"Saint-Etienne have warned Liverpool off a January move for exciting midfield prospect Dimitri Payet. Damien Comolli's defection from the French club to Anfield has put Liverpool in pole position to sign the 23-year-old".

In September, Carra also confirmed that the Reds ran the rule over Payet:

"I know Liverpool looked at him [Payet] five years ago when he played for Saint-Etienne".

It's probably a good thing that Liverpool didn't sign Payet at that time as it's doubtful he would've prospered during a period of such intense turmoil at the club.

Right now, though, Payet - whose transfer value has reportedly increased to around £18m - is tearing it up in English football, and despite being injured for almost two months of the season, he has more goals/assists in the league than every Liverpool attacking player (bar Firmino, who also has 10)

Hopefully, when he gets the chance, Klopp will unearth some attacking players who - like Payet - can hit the ground running, and relegate creatively bereft pretenders like Lallana to the bench.
