Anfield Surprise? Aldo claims £43m Liverpool-duo 'will start the Southampton game'. Klopp confirms fitness

On Sunday, Daniel Sturridge and Jordan Henderson made their long-awaited return from injury, and according to Jurgen Klopp, both players came through the game without new injury issues, which opens up the possibility that they may feature in tonight's League Cup clash with Southampton. Rushing players back from long-term injuries is never a good idea, but Anfield legend John Aldridge believes that Hendo and Sturridge are ready to be unleashed tonight.

In his column for the Liverpool Echo this week, Aldo mused:

"I'm pretty sure that both Henderson and Sturridge will start the [Southampton] game. They need a run out...and I expect Kolo Toure and Adam Bogdan to play".

When asked on Tuesday about the the possibility of Hendo and Sturridge starting against Southampton, Klopp told reporters:

"We cannot ignore that the [Southampton] game could have overtime. 120 minutes would be too much for both. If nothing happens from now, they will be in the squad."

Based on his stellar fitness history, Henderson is arguably robust enough to play two games in three days, but Sturridge?

Forget it. With his atrocious injury history, there's no point risking Sturridge from the start, and with Firmino, Benteke, and Origi in the squad, it's not even necessary.

In my view, Sturridge should start on the bench, and come in the second-half, just as he did against Swansea. It may also be prudent to continue holding Henderson back, too.

After three months out, he needs to be eased back in slowly, and with Lucas, Milner, Can, and Allen, the squad has enough central midfielders to cover.

* Sturridge/Henderson: Combined worth = £43m
